Guys, this isn't about money, it's about liability. IDK what you are on about about suing their own mother's vaginas, this is a pretty legitimate case. They can't have fighting games about their show use actual assets from the show. It's an unliscensed product being released as Gnu/freeware. None of the assets in the game are original content, it's made using shots from the show, meaning the license of freeware/gnu would put these stills under the copyright of the game's creators, meaning they would, in part, own the content used in their game and could use this to fuck with people.
It would also have strange legal issues with other things. The game was made in 2D Fighter Maker 2002 and I would guess there would be some legal shenanigans involving the intellectual property of games made using this program. Probably something like Machinima where you made the content, but they own it.

Oh god a MLP fighting game with "original content"
Recolors everywhere.

It's like the sanic fandom all over again
except the sanic fandom still exists

It would however possibly be legal. It would count as a sort of fanfiction game. None of the characters would be associated with the show. They can't sue you for drawing a horse the same shape you draw them, but they can sue you for taking their horse drawing and using it.
Honestly its a shame when creativity and fandom is forced down by the money makers. This game have been hyped for a while now, and it had been given good praise by the community. It was showcased at many conventions, and just now it turns out all that hard work was for nothing.
They made a game about fighting ponies using the names and titles of the characters in the show.
Bronies or not, I always hate it when fan games get cease and desists
I pretty said the same thing yet I get 6 dislikes lol FP.
They made a game about fighting ponies using the names and titles of the characters in the show.
So? Its still creativity, and its still fandom. There are hundreds of mods based around Star Wars for example, and no one did a cease and desist for using Darth Vader hundreds of times over there. Its still a big 'fuck you' to the community that they enjoy.

There's a difference between creativity and shoving someone else's art up your generic 2D Fighter Maker 2002 game's ass to make it more popular.
A big difference.
They still had to create all the animations and what not, it's not like there was a bunch of fight scenes in the show they just stitched together
edit:
And it's not like they actually had the raw assets from the show or anything, I imagine they still had to vector everything up and stuff which is time consuming
They should have issued the cease and desist a lot earlier before they put all that work and effort into it. In fact, they should have probably issued it as soon as they made that trailer way back when.
threads like these make my days just a little brighter
if only i had a auto scroll/next page thing and a bag of popcorn
Good. Fuck bronies.

No, but they had the characters from the show in the show's style of art, which in a copyright sense for cartoons, is the exact same as having original assets. It's the exact same picture of a horse just put in a fighting game.
And when these pictures of the horses are put into the game, and the game is protected by copyright, the characters in the game are too. This means that the game creators would have rights to the characters from My Little Pony, which they didn't.
Their target demographic is actually entire families. However, bronies are, surprisingly, a huge potential pool of money. Bronies already buy so much of the merchandise, way more than a small child can, or more than their parents are willing to get their kids. They have recognized this, and started to cater a little bit to the fandom with stuff in the show. Hasbro is not stupid, they realize that they have something here so they will never push us away completely.
why are you even arguing about a children's cartoon on a forum; more or less, who the fuck cares? honestly
Good. Fuck bronies.
But this is a fighting game based on a show that doesn't supports violence. Now consider that the game looks official, that a lot of people are going to think straightaway that the game is made by Hasbro, and how parents tend to overreact these days...
Aw, that sucks. Game looked pretty good for a fan-made game.

It IS a money issue because they have mostly overlooked basically all fan produced content (Regardless of commercial/noncommercial status) as fair game, making an exception JUST with this game because it is direct competition with them.
The problem isn't with the assets, it's with what this game implies and the outreach it was getting within a community they pretend to control for their own commercial gain. Hasbro does this for ALL of their franchises.
They should have issued the cease and desist a lot earlier before they put all that work and effort into it. In fact, they should have probably issued it as soon as they made that trailer way back when.
The reason why it's now rather than earlier is probably because of "Fighting is Magic"'s involvement in EVO2013 and the apparent shit-ton of money it raked in through donations (though, those donations were all for Cancer research iirc). For any unaware, EVO is the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, common games played there are the latest Street Fighter games, Tekken games, Marvel VS Capcom, etc. but they have smaller tournaments or casual tournaments for smaller fighting games, or old ones which are dying out. The tournament brings in players from all around the world and the prizes are usually high amounts of money. The tournament itself is sponsored by Capcom and over game developers.
Hasbro probably didn't think a fangame like this would take off and get finished, as most fangames don't. But now that it had a run-in to be played professionally at EVO2013, there's no doubt that Mane6 would finish production of the game ASAP, unless there was a Cease and Desist order.
I don't care about bronies but I care about fighting games a whole lot, and honestly the game was coming out pretty decent. Very good for a fan-made fighting game, so it's a shame to see Mane6's development go to waste. I heard that the woman who directed the first season of MLP:FIM, Lauren Faust, has offered to help the Mane6 team remake the game with non-canon Pony characters, so the game might still be possible, just under a different name and with different characters.
I watched this game last year in Evo 2012
As a fighting game player it looked fun
Stupid copyright laws ;_;
they should have learned about copyright laws before their dumbasses worked on it for two years.

No, the reason they are targeting this game and not other fan art is because most fanart is shared within the brony community, where everyone understands that it was in fact made by a fan and not Hasbro. The reason they are shutting the game down now is not because it is in competition with them. The game has not ranked in any official profits, just donations etc. The reason they are shutting it down is because it's gone beyond that point of fanart and becoming a famous game. It is exiting the fanart corner and competing against other proffesional quality games, despite is using Hasbro's IP. What they are worried about now is that the game is becoming massively publicized because of it's cancer research donations. It's getting media attention and becoming known to non fans, a lot of whom won't know the game is fan made. News sites will credit Hasbro for the game and soon enough it will become a shitstorm of controversy because "OMG HASBRO MED A VIOLENT GAEM WITH MY LITTLE GURL'S PONIES!" when in reality it was a fan project.
It's how the media works
It's a shame for this to happen, but it was an inevitability.
The reason people make pony fan games or fan games in general, is because they get hit with a burst of inspiration. Watching My Little Pony, Star Wars, or even playing Half-Life makes you think of new ways you can interpret and play with them, like toys. You also have a built-in audience when you want to showcase your work.
Even I got caught by a burst of inspiration from My Little Pony and started working on my own fan-game (which died on its own). I was always aware and afraid of Hasbro cracking down, but it was a lot of fun.
And for people saying they just slapped stuff into Fighter Maker, you're grossly wrong. They put a lot of effort into it. Their animations are professional-level quality, rivaling or one-upping the show. Take a look for yourself:

Yeah, Black Mesa Source should have just quit since they were working with Valve's copyrights.

Except Valve is usually fine with things like that, since it was a mod for one of their games. Plus, I think they asked for permission.

just that alone is enough to make me think that the thread was made with the intent of hating broniesxdxdxdxd
honestly does it matter what the game is about? considering how people whine about ea/activision sending c&d to fan groups, this getting winners is not cool
No it's just that the older male audience of MLP is very pathetic and should be laughed at.
I can't say I approve of this game, but it's always depressing with a non-profit project gets shut down by C&D letters. Did they ever receive official permission from Hasbro to make the game, before?
Their website says the game is non-profit. Would that competition have money prizes? I don't really think that would cause it, since the game itself would not be used for financial gain by the developers.
It was going to be part of the "Indie Showcase" at EVO. I'm pretty sure that there is a $10 entry fee for Indie Showcase tournaments, and I've heard of a lot of Bronies saying they were coming out to EVO just to play this game. The devs could have just handed off the money to Mr Wizard, if they even got the money themselves in the first place, but there's still money changing hands because of the the game.
I for one am relieved I won't have to share a cramped room with tons of Bronies. The game really looked like a shitty version of Skullgirls anyway.
