My point still stands. An entire country full of starving people who are subject to incredibly inhumane treatment is more important than some economic burden. Oh boo hoo, you will only turn 150 million instead of 300 million in profits for the next few years, but you know what? An entire country isn't dying slowly at the hands of a brutal dictatorship. Who cares about them though right? Gotta make that dollar, how else would you be able to afford those quarterly CEO bonuses you deserve?
If the NK decides to join SK (very unlikely for some time). SK's economy will instantly grow by the amount of NK's economy. Also SK can solve the NKs food shortage near instanly and sending aid there from it's food surplus& buying from market. And as long term solution it will send farming equipment and fertilizers there. Massive infrastructure projects connecting SK with China and Russia will begin nearly instantly. I bet that SK already has plans and gets massive loan from World Bank when the time comes.
North Korea's problem isn't just Kims. There are thousands of partymembers, military officials, bureaucrats and other people who have a lot of power there and nearly everyone of them have their own interests. Many of them are afraid that major reforms might cause harm to their position and life quality and more or less support the current system. Major changes are highly unlikely due thhat, unless highly skilled leader rises to power and manages to push a major culture change. Or the system collapses on itself. Most likely the latter is going on there as the high ranked officials are dividing between blocs and starting to fight. Maybe point of that suprise meeting is to get South's support for their bloc.
South Korea's dictator fell when his head of the KCIA assassinated him. After that the government became the democracy it is now

But, if North Korea really wanted to boost their economy, they should sell those PPSh-41 clones they make. At the very least, people would buy them for novelty reasons. I know what I would.

But the main thing was economical growth and SK alligning itself with Allies, which allowed it to become working democracy. [editline]5th October 2014[/editline]
Haha. NK has lots of crude low-tech/level industry and raw materials production with natural resources, which basically supports their current (low) lifequality, selling stuff is basically just for importing weapons and luxury items for the elite. Shifting to market economy causes many NK's factories to be closed or upgrades as they're inefficent and produces poor quality items.
Wonder if this has anything to do with it... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/11138105/North-Korea-capital-under-lockdown-amid-rumours-of-threat-to-Kim-Jong-un.html
Yeah, lets ignore the fact that almost an entire country of people are starving and being subject to completely inhumane treatment because it wouldn't be economically profitable.
If you had actually read my post you'd see I was responding to someone who said it would be massively good in the world for the Koreas to unite. I was only saying that it would actually be shitty for the South if it had happened and put things in a different perspective. I never said they shouldn't unite, I just said that it wouldn't be as universally good as it might appear. No reason to be a dick. You think it would cost $150 million to rebuild the north? It's gonna cost a few billion at least. They will have to pave roads, establish electrical grids, build factories and housing. They will basically be building an entire country from scratch for people who have no concept of the modern world. It's not just about money, either. Adopting NK will severely affect SK in so many different ways, almost all of them negatively. That's something they have to think about. If it was as easy as "oh hey lets just bring in an entire fucking country and feed and house them for the rest of their lives", this wouldn't even be a conversation.
I think both sides are tired of this bullshit struggle and its just been the Kim bloodline fucking everything up for both sides.
"Hey you guys, kill Kim and you can come over here where there's food and freedom and food."
