Everybody is moving towards more and more minimalist design nowadays.
Logos have to work when displayed on a smartphone screen, you can't make them too complicated
I don't get how people can get upset at Google logo for following the "simplistic/minimalism" trend when it already followed the "bevel and emboss" trend.
I figure this logo change has something to do with them creating a parent company.
Alphabet's homepage has alphabet blocks on it. Google's new logo is shown drawn with crayons on their homepage. They're going with a more childish feel. Maybe it's to symbolize simplicity or user-friendliness?
It's elementary!
I think it's a slight contrast to Apple's marketing as a super sophisticated brand. Google's been going for that non-divisive fun - you can see it in even to small things like their use of vivid colors in comparison to Apple's fetish for white.

I'm serious

thats gotta have been an april days font at some point for google
It was modernized, logos should be as simple and clean as possible so as to make them easier to see/recognize when in a small size because nowadays you have to account for small screens when creating logos.
It's why everyone is doing it, not because of some hip trend but because everyone has to think about small screens now, something they never really did have to worry about before.

"So fancy"
Seriously who is responsible for the redesign, did he use MSPaint and did a 10 second design? Minimalist flat art just shows how lazy graphics designers are these days

unless you already had a colour palette and the right font, making it in ms paint would be very hard
I don't like it. Doesn't fit.
I just miss the old lowercase 'g.'
You know, Bing did the same thing. I hate the new bing logo, the old B was just so much cooler looking.
I think it looks better.
People will get over it.
I mean, there was a huge uproar when eBay decided to stop being a 90s company. Don't really see much of that now.

I like it, but then again I am a fan of flat and minimalist designs.

Good god. Now that I've gotten used to the new logo, seeing the two side-by-side like that really highlights how awful the old one was.
I really love flat design and much prefer sans-serif fonts but there's something about this I don't like
It could well be a resistance to change but it just feels a tad ugly

In graphic design, less detail does not equal less work

You can add a ton of separately cool stuff to a document and you get a mess. It's the exact same reason why artists train in using only the colors that they need.
Logos should be created with the mindset that it will be used in a variety of contexts (web, video, magazines, packaging, clothes, etc). At the same time, it should also be simple enough for easy reproduction but also clever enough to create an identity. Less is more.
there is absolutely no character here apart from the coloring and the e looks off-balanced.
The issue here is when your logo is literally just the text of your company name, it has to show a little something.
Like fuck it just looks dead now without the exaggerated hook of the lowercase g.

From a quick glance at web site design, I've realized that even simple designs take a lot of work to create. For instance, any web developer who cares about details has probably thought about exactly where to position things.
Another example would be the highway signs we drive past everyday. Although seemingly simple, the FHWA publishes a massive book on exactly how elements on signs should be laid out. They have even ran many studies, trying out different layouts to get signs to be as legible as possible.
One thing I hate to this day is how they changed the Chrome logo.

I just like the 3D shiny aesthetic so much better. It was like, something inspired by the mid-y2k shiny-curved-objects-in-UI craze, but at the same time different.

And it's one of the few things I would like to have as a paperweight.
I'd like to add on that some of our most iconic logos have been the most simple.
Two names, Paul Rand and Saul Bass, stand out the most among these simple logos. They designed the logos for many recognizable companies, including IBM and AT&T.
It's always looked childish.
No it hasn't.
I really am going to miss the old logo though, to me it's a timeless design that could have lasted another 20 years.

but its so cheezy
It looks like a font made for children.
It's been fine ever since they got rid of the shadow and beveling

It's iconic enough that the loopiness and serifs make it stand out rather than look dated.
I just wonder how they could make it look any more minimalist and soft and rounded and harmless and lacking character? It's like they're making their logo like how you'd make a baby's toy, get rid of as many sharp angles as possible and make it soft and flat in case they shove it in their mouths.
Maybe next they'll round all the letters, and after that, it'll just be some colored dots.

Wow that looks terrible. Weird how I get used to new logos and then the old one looks wrong. I'm sure way back then I thought the old logo looked better but now it looks terrible, just like that eBay example on the other page.
