I really hope this makes Australia push it through, we've been waiting on bi-partisan support but this definitely iis a shove in the right direction
Refresh the page and resubmit.
Also, Michigan here, just got dark out and all I can hear is fireworks going off, seems some people are celebrating by touching off their Fourth of July stockpiles early.

Some of that may have been scheduled in advance for a pre-4th of July show.
I just read Justice Scalia's dissent to the decision. It's actually incredibly rational and well thought out, and makes for an interesting read.
I still think he's wrong because he joins the Chief Justice in his dissent, but he makes some good points about what the Judiciary's role should be in matters.

Wrong. We (UK) had legalised same-sex marriage a year ago. :v:

A little bit better picture. Probably cause it's darker now.

Nah we're all for gay marriage (well, some of us). Two of the chicks I know in my reenacting group are lesbians.

I don't necessarily agree with the way this was done. I'm glad it was done, but it's comparable to the ATF "interpreting" NFA to restrict firearms in ways that really should be done through the regular process of law.
Good thing, iffy precedent.
honestly the most satisfying part of all of this has been unfriending everyone on facebook who's commented asinine bullshit about "adam and eve not adam and steve" or "i have gay friends but this isn't okay" or sharing bible quotes and gloom-and-doom prophecies of how gay marriage is going to destroy america
i hate texas

Oddly enough I live in Texas and haven't really seen this on mine. The Christians on my FB are mostly praising this and saying stuff like they're happy the nation is starting to understand Jesus' teachings. Only had to chew one guy out.
What I don't like about my conservative-leaning family is that, even though most of them support gay marriage, they look at the opposition as just another system of beliefs, that should be equally respected. As an opinion.
I always saw people against gay marriage as the same as the people who were against interracial marraige in the 1950s/60s. Bigoted and flat out wrong.
I can't wait til 50 years from now, when my grandkids ask if that kind of bigotry was common, and I can say like my dad could say about racism, that yes, a very big chunk of the country was that bigoted.

Couple quotes from my feed that made me fume and unfriend people:
"A flag that is apart of our country's history and our freedoms is considered "offensive" and is taken down. But Gay marriage is considered offensive if you're not okay with it and it's legalized. Hmm ok America."
maybe stop being fucking offended by who people decide to love fuckwad
"As a follower of Jesus, do I agree with and support homosexuality? Absolutely not. As the Bible says multiple times, homosexuality is a sin. But also as a follower of Christ, I am called to endlessly love people, regardless of the their choices."
it isn't a choice assnut, and you aren't loving people endlessly if you say "i love them even though they're gay!" equivalent of saying "i love you, even though you're black!!"

No, the BATFE is a law enforcement agency, it's not their position to interpret the proper meaning of the law, it's their position to enforce the law. The Supreme Courts exist explicitly for the purpose of interpreting the proper meaning of the law, and they determined that marriage equality is covered within our human rights.
I actually woke up today around 2 PM, because I've been sick. Signing into Facebook and seeing this felt really surreal. It was hard to believe that it was happening. I've been happy all day, in spite of being bedridden. Also, this has been a really, really handy way of finding who I should unfriend.

Good point, that was dumb of me.
this is a historical date
People in my podunk rural Texas town are celebrating with rainbow fireworks. This is awesome. I'm so proud of my town.

I don't even live there but I feel overwhelmingly happy for everyone that has been waiting for this for so long.
I somehow feel proud I was able to see America finally support gay marriage. I do hope Australia doesn't fuck around with it, but I feel Aus will have to wait a fair while though.

My Texas experience today has been mixed. I've had two people on facebook mention they were against it. One of them was making a fuss, the other just shared something about it. I heard on the (Houston) area news that there were some churches that supported the decision, but a bunch throughout Texas that said it goes against the teachings of God. My parents are staunch conservatives and I'm here for the summer between houses. They like to listen to the conservative talk radio guy Michael Berry on KTRH 740. I was expecting the worst but the general message was that (while the decision should've been a state decision) there's really no good reason for gay people not to be able to get married, and that there's no good reason to hate gay people, and he spent the hour taking "Married peoples advice for newlywed Gay people" phone calls. The greater majority of them were genuine advice. Occasionally the callers made a remark that they didn't agree with it but love is love etc. Only one guy said to repent.
(they also played this song on the radio which I found funny)

And as I said earlier, Houston's mayor is a lesbian and the city is having an annual pride parade downtown for the first time tomorrow.
Religion is pretty much the only real reason gay marriage took this long to get legalized
Religion and politics only dampens actual progress

I think that is basically Texas. I don't like when this state is portrayed as a wasp nest of bigotry, 'cause it ain't.

I also live in Texas and the only people upset by that are old fashioned homophobic folks and people who attend the nearby churches.

You're not going to see much wiggle room in African countries. Same sex being legalised in South Africa came as a surprise to me, but the South is heavily Christian and the rest is Christian ideologies and Islamic ideologies.
So yeah, going to be some time until you see more colours there
the social landscape has changed a lot since 2004
Also for comparison, Bernie Sanders was pro-gay in 1972 :)

under 3- "Let us abolish all laws dealing with abortion, drugs, sexual behavior (adultery, homosexuality, etc)"
The only person I've actually heard say anything negative about it is my mother, who's convinced that the government is going to try to force churches to perform same-sex marriages.
I don't think she gets that this is separating the church from the state, not the state trying to control the church. Church isn't even part of this discussion.
Interesting news from the front, though. My state (the one that started all this with the original court case, Tennessee) has introduced a bill that would prevent the government from requiring churches to perform gay marriages. So... Way to be effective there, state legislature.

My mother is the same and she is very homophobic.
