Nintendo can't catch a break. After announcing dismal Wii U sales and diminished financial projections today, shares of the Tokyo game giant have plunged more than 15 percent. The company is currently trading down more than 17 percent to $14.90.
Nintendo today slashed its Wii U sales forecast for the period ending March 31, 2014 to 2.8 million consoles, down from 9 million, representing a decrease of almost 70 percent. 3DS sales projections for the same period fell from 18 million to 13.5 million.
Finally, Nintendo said it now expects to post a loss of ¥25 billion ($240 million) for the year, compared to a previous forecast for a profit of ¥55 billion ($527 million). If Nintendo does end up in the red, it will mark the company's third straight annual loss.
And in other news:
"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a sceptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each."
"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."

Ouch.
Though, to be fair, Nintendo was a little too optimistic if they were shooting for 9 million Wii Us in the first year. Are they insane? I doubt PS4 is going to pull 9 million in its first year unless Watch Dogs and the others turn out to be bombshells from the 23rd century of awesome, Nintendo was kidding itself with the funky mismarketed tablet that tons of average consumers still think is a Wii in a redesigned case with a new tablet controller and not a whole new generation of console.
I mean, if anything, 2014 is the year to buy a WiiU if you were interested but aren't just rich enough to throw money at something you might end up ignoring for 18 months until there are more games to play. I only bought a 3DS in November when ALBW came out, and I'm not considering a WiiU until perhaps this winter holiday season because the library hasn't filled out enough. It's a decent console worth respecting, but a console with no games is a bookend for your TV.

I think you mean Watch Dogs
First of all, they fail by doing their own thing, they should focus on the things that other console manufacturers focus on in their consoles. Like a good social experience with other players and making it easy for indie developers to create content and publish.
Miiverse is an absolute cesspool and there's no chat between players (bcuz pedoforks :((((((()

Yeah, saw it coming.
Oh please Nintendo 3DS XL+Pokemon should pull them through easily.
I have a feeling that the 3DS is kind of Nintendo's backbone right now, I mean honestly like the above poster said Pokemon and Mario games are all Nintendo needs and people will buy that shit like candy, if they didn't have so many exclusive series they probably wouldn't have made it past the 4th gen of consoles.
I mean hell, I even bought a 3DS because of it's exclusive titles, I wouldn't buy the WiiU yet because there isn't anything I'm personally interested in by way of games, once they release a new Zelda title however I'm sold. Forecasting 9 million consoles sold in the first year was dumb to boot considering the lack of great titles for the system as it stands now.
Classic cooking of the books.
This would probably be a good time to buy into them however. Even if the Wii U still continues to sell badly, their stocks are bound to go back up at some point.
I think you mean Watch Dogs
Yup. :v:
On topic, Nintendo's sales projection analyst guys apparently forgot to notice that, since the last time they launched a major home console, the global economy's taken a big steaming dump on most peoples' faces, and money isn't flying around so freely among the average consumer anymore.
9 million!?
That's 1983 Atari levels of insane.

PS2 reached 100 million within the first 5 years, Considering one would expect the first year of sales to be the best, 9 million isn't that much.

Christmas is over pal.
They can't stick with first party games forever. I mean they could, if they make a Wii U Pokemon or bring back some classics to the 3DS they might do it but as i see it people are choosing a Xbone or PS4 as their "main console" and the Wii U as a extra device which happens to also have some neat games if you are interested.
At least they're getting a few ideas up their sleeves. Although I think its a bit of a bummer I'm excited to see what theyre going to do about it or change.
Christmas is over pal.
There are some games that sell very well beyond the holidays. Pokemon is one of them.
Well fuck that's worrying

The PS2 didn't launch into this economy, however. From a pure engineering and gamer attraction end, I think the PS4 does appear to be Sony engineering itself for a second PS2 Golden Age, but consumers have to open their wallets in droves for that to happen.
It's possible, but it's not a clincher, that's all I'm saying.
Nintendo can't compete with Sony in terms of Consoles though.
Honestly the Wii was just an overclocked gamecube, and the Wii U doesn't seem all that appealing.
Nintendo's main thing is dominating handhelds. Which is fine, but I think handhelds are generally less popular than consoles.
Talk about shooting for the moon. At least we can all hope we won't see another Wii successor next gen thanks to the Wii U.

Gamecube 2 plz
9 million Wii Us by March? Who the hell thought that was realistic? Nintendo have been living in a fantasy world since the release of the Wii, they assumed the Wii U would become a giant success when casual players don't give a fuck about the touch screen gimmick.
I've said it in every Wii U thread, Nintendo have been sitting on their hands thinking Zelda, Mario, and Smash Brothers would hand them success of a platter, but those game only appeal to Nintendo fans, the people who most likely already have a Wii U.
People who aren't in love with classic Nintendo series look at the Wii U and see very little reason to buy one, too few third party games and absolutely no new first party IPs. Casual gamers are too busy playing games on their phones to give a shit and core gamers can play the games they want on anything else. Only Nintendo enthusiast bought Wii Us and after the Wii, those guys are few and far between.
The Wii U's failure thus far is entirely due to Nintendo's hubris, if they went in with the same attitude they had with the N64, or the Wii, they would be in a clear lead by now.
I don't own any of the new Nintendo consoles but damn this is tough news to hear. Nintendo shaped my childhood, from sketching Zelda maps on graph paper to watching my Dad beat Jaws for the first time (the only videogame he ever enjoyed playing his entire life) to swapping Pokemon in gym class. I just wish they would build a nice beefy machine without any gimmicks.
I would totally buy a Nintendo Smartphone if they ever made the jump, which this article makes it sound like they are considering it.
The Gameboy advance kept Nintendo alive when the GameCube sold like shit, the 3DS will do the same

The Gamecube quickly rebounded after nearly a year, though.
It tied the Xbox in market share, and was supported by third party devs up until about 2007.

They'll never be anything but first party.
They've stated quite a few times that they'll close their doors completelby before going third/second party. Which is too bad but they have their reasons.
But Nintendo's First party IPs have consisted of nothing but Mario Zelda Pokemon for a while now.
No other IPs get any sort of love unless Miyamoto wills it.
I mean who on earth remembers the last Star Fox or F-zero game?
Hell my favorite Nintendo series, Metroid is pretty neglected too.

This is why Nintendo needs to change up their staff, or actually listen to their fans for once.

The Wii U is Gamecube 2. Whether people would like to admit it or not. It's as close as you're going to get.
