'Euthanize' autistic teen for being 'nuisance,' says anonymous letter
I figure if they just sound proofed the rooms he typically is in then everything would be fine. He probably wouldn't even notice, so no harm no foul.
you know how expensive that is? sound proofing isn't expensive, but it's definitely not cheap, especially if you're going to cover more than one room. confining him to one sound proofed room might aswell be a cell, and i would really love to see someone sound proof their whole house.
when you suggest putting him in a sound proofed room so people simply can't hear it, it really doesn't sound like it.

i also would be led to believe the person complaining in the OP is overblowing things seriously. how are we to know whether or not the parent of the autistic child is simply not doing anything to help the situation? it's just a stupid assumption to think that the parent of an autistic child is just going to do nothing about it, the child would probably not be living if that was the case.

This is the associated costs with having an autistic child, and it should be common courtesy really, especially if you have a severe autistic child who screams constantly.

implying people choose to have an autistic child or something
and no, adoption isn't much of an option when the child is autistic.
implying people choose to have an autistic child or something
How does that imply that they chose it? They don't ask for it, but they still need to deal with it, it is a life ruining curveball thrown by fate.
Severely autistic kids should not integrate with "normal" kids. It can only lead to problems, such as this.
Careful or it could spread to your kids! make sure they wash their hands with soapy warm water
Believe it or not there are people who'd gladly take it if you don't want it. Some people would prefer to have to nurture more.
that really depends where you live and how lucky you are

yes because what is not having infinite money on demand to supply for a child that cost more than you had expected/planned for

Well that's no one's fault, really, but the neighbors shouldn't have to suffer because of it.
you're going in circles
I think WE're going in circles
[editline]20th August 2013[/editline]
I'm just going to stop, let this thread die, no one here really disagrees with each other enough to even warrant arguing.
i disagree with you entirely but ok lol
i disagree with you entirely but ok lol
Doubtful, no one would think that a neighbor should have to deal with an autistic child just cuz, and that's really all we're arguing.
I may have made a bold statement, but why would you? Honestly, I can't think of a single reason why the neighbors should have to deal with it. Everything else we argued about were simply distractions, all it comes down to is that simple point, that the neighbors shouldn't have to deal with it.
jesus christ this thread's a fucking disgrace and idiots like lambda and the morons that are protecting this dumb bitch are even worse.
Glad you're open to different opinions and viewpoints! It sure would be stupid to presume anyone who disagrees with you is an idiot, right guys?
euthanize the exclamation mark key

Autistic people debating about autistic people. Ok.

I have no idea what to rate this, but I'll rate it agree because I agree with the point it's trying to make, not with the sarcasm taken at face value.

epic trollface post
They may understand what the life is like, but I wouldn't say that someone who is afflicted by a disorder would be a very good person to get your opinions from, they have a bias, and they likely don't want to feel severely depressed about their lives so they attempt to feel better about themselves by forming pride groups and making mantras. It's all for the purpose of feeling good, and getting through life, not for dealing with reality.
It's really a terrible situation.
Does this mean that people of color and women - who are statistically proven to have a lower quality of life based on issues like rape, poverty, sexual harassment, lower wages, and poor media representation - are just "trying to feel better about themselves" when they fight for their own rights?
I mean just because autistic people have a different functioning brain does not necessarily mean that they need to look on themselves as people who have something wrong with them. If the technology, education, and disability programs improve over the years, many more autistic people will become fully functioning individuals who can live relatively independently from others. We already see that today with individuals on these forums who have directly come out saying they are autistic.
"The Speed of Dark" deals with this issue too. The main character's company [sp]forces him to take an autism correction chip which essentially turns his brain into a non-autistic brain.[/sp] This radically changes the way he views others, and he loses a lot of friends - including a potential lover - because his thought process has changed so radically.
In other words - autistic people develop their own unique personality and way of thinking based on the fact that they are autistic. It's very clear that their brains are not functioning the way they should be, but to argue that the core issue here is their brain's malfunctioning is wrong. Most of the negative aspects of autism come from ignorant and oppressive people who have dipshit opinions on how autistic people should be treated (i.e. the woman in the letter). When we look at the negative impact of mental disabilities in the West, it's not so much the disability themselves as how people treat others who have these disabilities. Our society isn't capable of supporting the disabled - we believe everyone SHOULD be born fully able - and many individuals within society feel the same way. If people were willing to sit down and shut up and treat autistic people with the respect they deserved, it would become MUCH easier for parents to deal with autistic children. Our society would deal with autism much more efficiently, and we would probably have a lot more people actively working with autistic people and working on autism research.
You should know that autistic and mentally disabled people don't sit around all day moping about how their life is massively inferior because they don't function the same way as we do. Most of them find ways to have a happy life, unless the environment around them tries to actively tell them that they are inferior or worthless. That's when real issues with mental disability begin.
you know i honestly never noticed this before but WOW there's a lot of eugenics supporters on FP

I don't believe the only issues with autism/retardation/etc are simply other people, they are very real issues that cause them to fail to integrate with human society as it stands. That isn't people's fault, that's just how it is. Obviously someone who fails at a critical element such as information processing is going to have a seriously bad time, obviously someone who fails at a critical element such as socializing is going to have a serious bad time. It has nothing to do with bigotry, bigotry is simply the result of them not being able to function normally, but it is not the cause of their disparity.
But I'm literally done, if you want to continue with me, PM me.

Haha what the fuck, are you actually saying that. I am just curious if you are genuinely suggesting that the (first) world should go back to the way it was 30-40 years ago where people who are different are segregated for their "own benefit"? It isn't how you deal with development / mental disorders, it just doesn't work.
But lets indulge your idea, why not just do what they do in those ex-soviet bloc countries and lock them in cages? I mean you clearly don't think they have any place in society.
You can all sit there and be 'holier than thou' types. But my family has been visited by my mother's sister every summer consistently. She has an autistic as fuck son who wakes me(And everyone else) up by screaming at the top of his lungs, for no apparent reason. My mother's sister does NOTHING to shut him up.
But there is a reason? People with autisim are human you know, and humans (like all animals) make noises when they are distressed. Just that someone who is nurotypical might have slightly more control / be able to express it differently (such as with words).
Wow. Just... wow. As an autistic person myself, I really can't even grasp why someone would want me to get euthanized. Seriously, how fucked up is that? Yeah, I tend to make sounds myself or mutter to myself, but I can't really help it, no matter how hard I try. It just happens. That's surely reasonable enough to call out for such atrocious actions.
As someone with a brother that has aspergers and as sister in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy this hits home. This lady's batshit and I'll leave it at that.

It's true that their mind is having issues in information processing and socializing, but we live in a society which automatically states that there is something wrong with them for failing to adhere to these parts of brain functioning.
Yes, it's true that they're disabled. That doesn't mean they lack the ability to fully function, or that they're less of a human being on ccount of their autism. Internalized bigotry about autism creates an environment where disabled people are constantly told that they're less than others. It's an important issue and it's one of the reasons autism rights groups are popping up - because it's very clear autistic individuals and mentally disabled individuals are constantly shit on by a society that thinks words like "retarded" and "autistic" are insults that can be dished out regularly.
If you can't see the negative ways we constantly treat disabled people, you're not going to see how negative our society is for the autistic. Truth be told, it is not the disability itself that can make life upsetting - it's the nature of a society which argues that life is somehow neutered based on their disabilities. Eugenics is a natural progression from that sort of oppressive mindset.

You and the rest of those autistic monsters poisoning my perfect neighborhood
My english is pretty bad so I looked up on "euthanized" to see what it meant, and before I did it I was pretty sure I didn't wanted to know.
And I was right.
