This has got to be by far the most stable Windows launch ever. I've yet to experience any annoying bug whatsoever. It runs as smooth as windows 7 did, even better I'd say.
Metro is probably great if you're using Windows 8 on a tablet, not at all if you're on a desktop

Metro isn't designed around keyboard/mouse
It's not that Metro outright sucks, it's that they purposefully removed the start menu entirely to strongarm everyone into using Metro

no problem with including a redundant feature when you can easily make it optional
You guys should really read over http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/10/11/reflecting-on-your-comments-on-the-start-screen.aspx it will explain/answer a lot of your complaints/questions.
I haven't used Win8 much, and I'm wondering if I should jump for it or 7 for my next build. I can't upgrade because WGA detected my copy as XP as pirated. I've used 7 and I love it, I just don't know how similar 8 is to it in terms of customization and whatnot.

Also if I get 8 I plan on buying Start8 because not having a Start button will force me to work a way I'll need to take too much time on adjusting to.
At the moment, you have to upgrade from XP SP3, Vista or Seven (or at least that is what I got told by the Microsoft Support Team).
I'd say try to get hold of the Release Preview ISO first, and install that, just to see if you get on with it.
I honestly think Windows 8 is working great, even on my desktop. I had used it on my laptop since the DP (just 'bout a year ago), but I actually had my doubts about the dekstop. I don't think the start screen is the devil itself in any way, in some ways it's actually better now. The thing is, I actually pin programs to it now, in Windows 7 I just had whatever it thought I'd want, and I'd just use the superbar to lauch shit. Now I use both the superbar and the start screen, and since I can customize it to not look crowded even with loads of shit on there, I just load it up with games, folders and pretty much everything I can think of. I just used the old one for search pretty much.

You're somekind of a computer professor?

You don't need a PhD in computer science to prove what he said. Its basically Windows 7 that uses less memory yet somehow performs better(?). That and a flashy start menu that does not even work over multiple displays plus touch support(which won't benefit most of us).

Using less memory and working faster is entirely possible, it's not great to use all the RAM in a system. And using it all doesn't inherently mean good performance (unless you are using it to cache shit properly). Using masses of memory is a side affect of us having masses of memory to work with. Programmers get lazy when we have resources and deadlines. If given time you can optimize almost anything to an incredible degree.
