• "Revenge porn" site operator sentenced to 18 years in prison

From what I'm reading, OTHER PEOPLE used his site to post pictures of their ex's. Bollaert just provided the place to do it. Why is Bollaert the sole person to blame and being made to spend 18 years in jail as if he's the only one responsible? It's clear Bollaert did something really shitty, but he's definitly not 18 years and $10,000 in the wrong. He's being made to bear the punishment that should be distributed amongst his entire userbase. Some murderers and many actual extortionists get away for less time than Bollaert was sentenced.
They didn't charge him for extortion, they charged him for posting the pictures to his site. My question is, did he though? From what I'm reading, OTHER PEOPLE used his site to post pictures of their ex's. Bollaert just provided the place to do it. Why is Bollaert the sole person to blame and being made to spend 18 years in jail as if he's the only one responsible? The pay-to-remove site thing is fucked up, but that doesn't seem to have legal bearing on his sentence and was probably only brought up by the prosecution to make the jury dislike Bollaert. It's clear Bollaert did something really shitty, but not 18 years and $10,000 in the wrong. Some murderers and many actual extortionists get away for less.
Extortion or hosting revenge porn images, I don't care, the shitbag is getting what he deserves regardless.
Extortion or hosting revenge porn images, I don't care, the shitbag is getting what he deserves regardless.
I think he deserves to be punished, but I don't think he is the only one to blame here. He's being prosecuted and punished as if he took each and every one of those pictures and personally posted them to his site. All of the people who actually broke the law are getting away.
im saying prison rape jokes are normal, obviously not prison rape itself dont play dumb it's a classic dark humor joke
so are jew + oven jokes but you'd probably lose your shit over those ones huh

Obviously the people who uploaded them are terrible, too, but it's likely really hard to catch them, so they're going for the person running the place.
They didn't charge him for extortion,
Dude.
As such, a California court convicted him on both identity theft and extortion charges

Nah, fuck 'em, he's violating people's privacy in a absolutely vile way and charging exorbitant prices to take it down He could ruin peoples lives with this kind of shit with harassment it could cause if someone recognized them in the picture.
From what I see in your posts, you are quite emotional. No doubt that he should serve a sentence, nonetheless, I wouldn't put him at the same level of sexual assault for instance - 18 years is a long time. But it is all first impression opinions, I don't know the full details of the case.
Dude.
Woops (pun not intended), you're right I misread the source. Edited my posts to fix that.
Bollaert's prison sentence seems too lenient compare to the harm and trauma his site has caused to many women.
From what I see in your posts, you are quite emotional. Even something like this could be painful and terrifying (what if someone recognizes you and tells your employer/abusive ex-boyfriend/conservative parents). I will agree it's definitely not as bad as actual physical rape, but it's still pretty horrible.
so are jew + oven jokes but you'd probably lose your shit over those ones huh
nah not really unless it was super clever whats funny is that those kind of jokes are still hilarious to fp and are still posted in lmao pics but god forbid someone makes a joke about rape because thats pushing it too far apperently
Tough shit. He shouldn't have been an extortionist scumbag if he didn't want prison time.
I totally agree. When he does come out, he's going to regret.
here is a person that doesnt understand dark humor i dont laugh at rape jokes but i can muster up enough understanding to grasp the basic concept of a joke, its actually not difficult at all. a joke is still a joke even if it's in bad taste or personally unfunny to you!
Yeah I get that it's a joke. Why do you think it's normal that people laugh at being subjected to sexual abuse?
I totally agree. When he does come out, he's going to regret.
He will also be an absolutely useless member of society.
Yeah I get that it's a joke. Why do you think it's normal that people laugh at being subjected to sexual abuse?
It's not laughing at sexual abuse, it's laughing at a joke about a subject that's considered taboo.
Yeah I get that it's a joke. Why do you think it's normal that people laugh at being subjected to sexual abuse?
it's extremely common humor therefore it's normal. "dont drop the soap" is an extremely common figure of the joke that plays on subtlety and the morbidity of the situation. i don't really understand how you don't think it's normal when you've probably heard it a million times before from people from all walks of life. i guess im just arguing semantics but it bothers me that you dont consider it normal just because its not inline with your personal moral compass.
It's not laughing at sexual abuse, it's laughing at a joke about a subject that's considered taboo.
...That subject being sexual abuse. What is your point again? Because it just wraps back around to laughing at rape. [editline]4th April 2015[/editline]
He will also be an absolutely useless member of society.
You're assuming he wasn't before this. :v: Again, it's extremely simple: Don't extort money. He knew it was illegal, no adult who could do this doesn't know extortion is illegal. He had full knowledge and he kept going, so he has to deal with the consequences.

I get that it is common and I get that it's a joke. I just don't find a joke whose punch line is "Haha this guy is gonna get buttfucked!" funny and I find it kinda weird that a lot of people do.
you dont consider it normal just because its not inline with your personal moral compass.
You are a strange guy

You are a strange guy
well im not a humor professor but i'd wager it has something to do with making light of usually dark stuff to make it easier to deal with or acknowledge. basically witticism in response to a hopeless situation. im not a fan of gallows humor but i understand that it's humor and leave it at that instead of looking for some deep underlying problems with society that lead to making such jokes in the first place. dunno why you are.
He is an asshole and hateful, no doubt he should be put to jail and pay a fine, however, 18 years seems excessive imo. That won't make him useful to society.
He's not exactly a useful member of society right now...

You are a strange dude for defending it.
I wonder if the guy who ran isanyoneup will get caught....
Making fun of rape is pretty messed up and is a problem in society. You are a strange dude for defending it.
i'm not defending making fun of rape i'm defending making fun of everything which is the basic principle of humor. there are worse things to make fun of than rape, but somehow people here jump to defuse jokes that have anything to do with rape faster than they jump to defend genocide jokes, jew jokes (which are actually still super duper hilarious in SH) and other blatantly racist jokes. i think you may need to see the bigger picture here. rape isn't the subject matter. my point is that all humor is fine and should not be used as a tool to prove or attack anything.
Making fun of rape is pretty messed up and is a problem in society. Similar to why some find this funny: (volume warning near the end)
Is this the same dude that went by Hunter and started some Twitter shit called TheFamily? If so he was a complete and total piece of shit just for the way he acted on there, let alone all this.
He will also be an absolutely useless member of society.
Oh yeah-- because he was curing diseases, inventing technological marvels, and improving the quality of life on Earth as we know it and spreading happiness to millions before he went to prison, right? No. Get real. This shitbag going to prison is nothing to cry over or feel any emotion over other than pleasant indifference. He did everything he's accused of, he's guilty, and that's how simple it is. And stop making massive assumptions. How do you know he'll be absolutely useless when he's eventually released? Even I don't presume to know that, in spite of my pointing out what a terrible person he's previously been (which is the reason why he's going to prison in the first place). [editline]4 April 2015[/editline] There is nothing to be angry or upset about here. Literally nothing. No reason to care at all unless you somehow strangely can relate to this guy and what he was doing, and what his life as a prisoner is going to be like. If anything, be upset the cunts who uploaded the pictures in the first place to his site aren't being punished right alongside him.

He's in jail for a period longer than most people viewing this post have been alive and longer than some murderers, rapists, and drunk drivers. He's a shitbag who took advantage of desperate people, but he doesn't deserve to have his life essentially ruined for it. For most of the victims of this site, those pictures will probably never be seen again now that it is taken down. For those whose pictures are in circulation, they will cease to be relevant in 3-7 years when they inevitably look different and might at the very greatest be vaguely recognized by some as looking like a nude image they saw randomly online a few years ago. He took the entirety of a punishment that should have been dealt out to everyone involved with the distribution of those pictures.

The punishment is more so for extortion of the victims by charging them hundreds of dollars to have their own images removed rather than the actual uploading of the images. This should not be a complex idea to understand. 2. It would be impossible to track down and charge every uploader of the images, and it makes sense to charge this wanker anyways because he provided the other wankers with a facility to upload those images. 3. He has parole in ten years, and his minimum sentence was supposed to have been twenty years and not eighteen, so he actually got off relatively well. 4. I am confused, because you seem to have more empathy for this scumbag than you do the innocent victims who were taken advantage of twice - by their exs or whoever once, and this scumbag a second time as he charged them $350 to take the images of themselves down.
1. The punishment is more so for extortion of the victims by charging them hundreds of dollars to have their own images removed rather than the actual uploading of the images.
The site was about revenge porn. It's pretty obvious who posted the picture if the victim recognises it and knows who she sent it to. A little bit of investigation would probably be able to firmly identify who uploaded each picture. This is assuming his site didn't keep track of user IP addresses, registration emails, and other identifying info, which it likely did.
3. I think that law is about justice and safety, not emotion-fueled payback and unfair punishment (referring to the fact he took the entirety of the disgust and punishment of all parties involved). The attitude of many in this thread of "who gives a fuck if it's right, the scumbag deserved it" disgusts me for this exact reason.
What exactly is unfair about this, considering he pulled a double whammy on the betrayal of these women's trust? In addition, did you miss the part about just how many counts of extortion and identity theft he got convicted for?
