"Revenge porn" site operator sentenced to 18 years in prison

From what I'm reading, OTHER PEOPLE used his site to post pictures of their ex's. Bollaert just provided the place to do it. Why is Bollaert the sole person to blame and being made to spend 18 years in jail as if he's the only one responsible? It's clear Bollaert did something really shitty, but he's definitly not 18 years and $10,000 in the wrong. He's being made to bear the punishment that should be distributed amongst his entire userbase. Some murderers and many actual extortionists get away for less time than Bollaert was sentenced.

I think he deserves to be punished, but I don't think he is the only one to blame here. He's being prosecuted and punished as if he took each and every one of those pictures and personally posted them to his site. All of the people who actually broke the law are getting away.

He broke the law by hosting them (afaik) and extorting money from people for them. Obviously the people who uploaded them are terrible, too, but it's likely really hard to catch them, so they're going for the person running the place.

I have a strong belief that sexual crimes are some of the worst due to the mental cost for the victims. Even something like this could be painful and terrifying (what if someone recognizes you and tells your employer/abusive ex-boyfriend/conservative parents).

I will agree it's definitely not as bad as actual physical rape, but it's still pretty horrible.

Your lack of empathy and spite for another human being is disturbing. He's in jail for a period longer than most people viewing this post have been alive and longer than some murderers, rapists, and drunk drivers.
He's a shitbag who took advantage of desperate people, but he doesn't deserve to have his life essentially ruined for it. For most of the victims of this site, those pictures will probably never be seen again now that it is taken down. For those whose pictures are in circulation, they will cease to be relevant in 3-7 years when they inevitably look different and might at the very greatest be vaguely recognized by some as looking like a nude image they saw randomly online a few years ago.

1. The punishment is more so for extortion of the victims by charging them hundreds of dollars to have their own images removed rather than the actual uploading of the images. This should not be a complex idea to understand.

2. It would be impossible to track down and charge every uploader of the images, and it makes sense to charge this wanker anyways because he provided the other wankers with a facility to upload those images.

3. He has parole in ten years, and his minimum sentence was supposed to have been twenty years and not eighteen, so he actually got off relatively well.

4. I am confused, because you seem to have more empathy for this scumbag than you do the innocent victims who were taken advantage of twice - by their exs or whoever once, and this scumbag a second time as he charged them $350 to take the images of themselves down.

The site was about revenge porn. It's pretty obvious who posted the picture if the victim recognises it and knows who she sent it to. A little bit of investigation would probably be able to firmly identify who uploaded each picture. This is assuming his site didn't keep track of user IP addresses, registration emails, and other identifying info, which it likely did.

My arguing for this person isn't because I think he's innocent; it's because I believe his sentence was not equal to his actions. I think that law is about justice and safety, not emotion-fueled payback and unfair punishment (referring to the fact he took the entirety of the disgust and punishment of all parties involved). The attitude of many in this thread of "who gives a fuck if it's right, the scumbag deserved it" disgusts me for this exact reason.
