NCA warns parents that kid coders could be cyber criminals

So, kids can't play sports because they will either hurt themselves or others through activity or using equipment as weapons. They can't watch TV because the media is brain washing them into buying things and they might see something "their young minds don't understand". Now apparently if a kid wants to learn to code, they are automatically en route to being a cyber criminal?
So, apparently the only morally "safe" thing to do is just stand around and stare at a wall?
This is so familiar..
Oh this reminds me of that episode of leo laporte

your IP is flagged
see you in cyber jail
wasn't there a huge push to get kids into coding a few years back because of a high forcasted demand of coders in the future? i remember it being around '10-11.

what your children will grow up into if you don't teach them the dangers of coding
Do they get an income from their online activities, do you know why and how?
lol, if they're interested in programming they probably get money from freelance developing, not from hacking the british national treasury or some shit.
I can sort of understand why they're doing this after some high profile hacks like the recent Talk Talk one, but hell if it's still retarded.
Like most of those "warning signs" could easily describe me and stuff like a teenager should be encouraged, not a red light for POTENTIAL CYBER CRIMINAL.
My parents think I'm watching porn all day, but in reality i'm hacking porn sites and getting free hookers all day.
Fuck the system. :smug:
I'd rather my kid be a cyber criminal than a burnout, at least they'll develop some marketable skills.
no no NO. 'Coding' is as dumb as 'Scripting'. It's computer programming. You're a programmer who develops programs.
This is like getting mad about saying apps rather than programs
[sp]app has been in use since the 80s[/sp]

I agree, but you're ignoring the second half of that sentence "do you know why and how?"
But to be honest it's common sense anyway to keep half an eye on what kids do online. there's more of a risk of the kid being the victim of cybercrime online than perpetrating it.
Such a useless warning. Like anyone this would reach would have any idea how to accurately tell.
I'm going to jump in here and defend the NCA, based on the link the article includes:
http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/crime-threats/cyber-crime/cyber-crime-preventing-young-people-from-getting-involved
-They list the behaviors as "warning signs", and recommend that the parent just have a talk with the kid, at least so they can figure out where private income is coming from.
-They list a number of resources for teens to build their cyber security skills without doing anything malicious(though they could include a few more)
-They very explicitly say what the "bad" terms are:
-This:
The only real problem with this is that overzealous parents may ban electronics from the children without taking the time to read through the article, or after watching a video. But even with their first ad, they'll only recognize the two signs that are extremely indicative of malicious use: their kid saying they "DDOS"ed a server, and having money in the bank.
Is it just me or is this becoming a pattern with Sensationalist Headlines.
First there is an outraging article title that sounds too unrealistic to be true, but these days you can never know.
Then there is the outrage.
Then it's realized that the article/subject isn't actually all that bad and is just something normal.
Yeah great, thanks NCA, as if it wasn't difficult enough yet to motivate students to get into Computer Science, now you have to brand those interested in it as criminals too.
Maybe you guys will get a second wave of sweet counter culture hacker scene.

Isn't scripting distinct from programming though? Since Programs tend to be compiled together, while scripts aren't
Is your child learning and developing useful skills?
Does your child dare to make money out of its allocated time period?
Does your child desire privacy and watch youtube videos, unlike the good old days?
