Can only hope to God what you said is true.

oh shit pageking
With the current source engine hl3 will look like shit and that's what valve doesn't want. They want to do something that will blow away even the cryengine or frostbite maybe that's what they want to achieve with source 2.

HL3 is obviously going to be the SteamBox's release title to drive sales. They know there is no way the console will survive without a bomb to back it up.
I agree. I'm willing to bet that the release of the SteamBox will bring forth Source 2, and/or Half-life 3 (Or Left 4 Dead 3). Whatever happens, it's going to be epic.
A new Left4Dead would be a great launch title for the steamboxes, co-op, source2, no required knowledge of previous games, replayability.

It would also be good for showing the capabilities of the engine, with all the zombies that'd be on screen at once, and map size.

Valve would never manage that. They aren't like Crytek or DICE, they don't produce engines with the intent of licensing them out, they will make a nice engine sure, but not anything that would blow Frostbite or CryEngine away graphically. Source 2 will likely be similar to Source in that it will target as many possible configurations as possible, being massively compatible at the expense of visuals and scale. Valve have always built their engines around their needs, not "what-if" scenarios (hence why they were using BSP in Source as other engines were moving away from it).

imagine gmod on something better than cryengine/frostbite

source 2 may be better than them but not in the sense of "Blowing it out of the water" graphically. Source has ALWAYS been "Jack of all trades". It relies on being able to run on most hardware and very open, but still rugged.
I really love this idea instead of using joysticks
Joysticks are good for very specific types of games and are kind of shoehorned in for other games but we've just delt with it for ages because the joystick is where the industry started
I really would love to try it first though, I hope they have displays up in gamestops and such. I love that the touchpads are theoretically actually good for mouse-focused games and would give the percision of a mouse without needing a mouse. I do wonder how ergonomic the controller is to actually use for more than a couple of minutes though. And the center-focused buttons make me curious too - normally center buttons on a 360 controller for example are far enough away from your thumbs that you might as well just not use them in normal play, you have to reach specifically for them which isn't good at all. This has such a center focused design I wonder if that'll be an issue. If they make the controller small enough (i.e. I can easily hit the center buttons on some PS3 rock candy third party controller I got which is smaller) then it won't be an issue.
Also their haptic thing doesn't make much sense to me so I really want to feel it for myself and see if it works good or not.
But mostly I'm just glad we are getting away from joysticks. They work good for games like racing, and they are nice ergonomically, but they aren't very precise unless you get seriously good at using them and even then you'll never want to control an RTS with one if you can help it. This looks much better and might be the thing I've always wanted to get PC-like control but for my console or sitting back from my PC.
I wonder how well it would work too with the oculus rift too. Whats cool is that because its hackable theoretically Oculus could make a 3rd party attachment or implementation inside of the controller that you can install yourself to really make it work great with VR.
Theres a few other things you can do with trackpads too, it would be very easy to emulate a joystick for one, and seeing as they are also buttons, you could potentially through software have unlimited buttons by using button press and press location, all that with a trackpad mounted to a single button

source was pretty much the best looking engine back in 04
We can all hope and dream.
I think physics is Source's greatest strength, but I'm wishing for improvement in that.
Like simple mechanisms that don't spazz out.
The layout of this controller is actually quite intuitive. Either thumb is only having to hit two buttons while controlling both analogue sticks instead of having one hit four. Your index and middle fingers can use all four of the buttons on the top of the controller at the same time while your last two fingers control the buttons on the handle. Overall this design would allow for more actions per minute than for example the Xbox controller.
One big advantage of the touchpad is that it will be able to detect where exactly you press it.
Basically, it will have the same functionality as thumbstick, while also working as a set of buttons at the same time. So it will be like having your thumbs on thumbsticks and buttons at the same time.
That's really impressive.
They should shove a gyroscope in it for racing games.
Techinally you could do that with the touchscreen in the middle.
