I'll buy one as soon as the next Half-Life game comes out.
Looks pretty cool, if the haptics are half as good as they claim it could be really nice to use. Also what is that still hiding inside the star...
I'd actually like to see them use trackballs in it instead of pads. I used a trackball with an FPS once just for the hell of it and it was actually really easy to aim.
HL3 is obviously going to be the SteamBox's release title to drive sales. They know there is no way the console will survive without a bomb to back it up.
They gotta give more incentives though if they're gonna release HL3 for it. I mean I can just get it for my PC. Why would I want to get it on a Steam Machine?
It looks interesting, a trackpad would allow similar precision to that of a mouse, but I don't know if it would work that well for controlling your movement.
Why not?
HL3 is obviously going to be the SteamBox's release title to drive sales. Also it's not really being marketed as a competitor to other consoles, just a way to enjoy your PC games in your living room.
Analogue Sticks are still superior.
A thing from the 90's is still superior? You have not even touched this one. Just because Sony and Microsoft has yet to do it doesnt mean its some bad function, it just means that Sony and Microsoft have been sleeping on the job instead of trying to innovate.
The Steam Controller was designed from the ground up to be hackable. Just as the Steam Community and Workshop contributors currently deliver tremendous value via additions to software products on Steam, we believe that they will meaningfully contribute to the design of the Steam Controller. We plan to make tools available that will enable users to participate in all aspects of the experience, from industrial design to electrical engineering. We can’t wait to see what you come up with.
well, at least some users will provide nice designs, hopefully.
I hate trackpads, they're fucking horrible.
I'm gonna hold back judgement on this until I try it myself. Looks weird, but I find it completely impossible to aim with analogue sticks, so who knows, maybe this is better.

right mouse left trigger
Unless I am missing something, where are the d-pads? How am I supposed to play games like COD or GTA without it. Unless its on the touch screen?
it looks hideous
right mouse left trigger
It says right on top it's default bindings, which means you almost 100% certainly can redefine them if you want.
I hate trackpads, they're fucking horrible.
I'm very interested on the haptic feedback stuff they talked about since I have no idea what it meant.
yeah. now valve please give us fans something we've wanted for 6 fucking years
You know they're not going to release it until they milk the feeling of hope until it's dry. Let's be honest, the only reason why most people pay attention to what valve releases is because they think Half-Life 3 is going to be mentioned. They do such a good job at including the number 3 in most of their "announcements for announcements".
Ookay, I think we always were like "Wow, that's stupid idea, Valve" first, but then everyone enjoys it. TF2 hats, L4D2, new steam layout... Everything turned like that
People would say that at first glance but once they read it into in more detail it becomes far more interesting.
A Haptic controller? Finally, I can actually feel the perfect metallic smoothness of P-Body's chassis And letting people tinker with everything about it is great, I'm sure wonderful things will come from that.
I believe in Valve. They've done their research, and they have a good reason to put such an investment in this. This is how it's always been.
It says right on top it's default bindings, which means you almost 100% certainly can redefine them if you want.
But why would they make that the default? It doesn't matter in the slightest I just thought it was funny.
God damn I want my keyboard and mouse.
I hate trackpads, they're fucking horrible.
Track pads hate you
I trust valve has put enough thought into it to make this good. They aren't the sort of company to ignore negative feedback and it's clear they did a lot of testing to make this as good as it can be.
I want it
I... like it. And I really want to get my hands on one.

Just because something is old doesn't mean it's outdated.

just re-iterating my thoughts from another thread
a coma would be more comfortable than holding that thing

But why would they make that the default? It doesn't matter in the slightest I just thought it was funny.
It's the default on the 360 and PS3 controllers, though. You use left click to shoot with a mouse, and you use right trigger to shoot on a controller.
Actually looks interesting. The different rings seem to be able to perform different actions. Really looking into trying this out, just not sure how accurate it really will be, I mean I have my whole mousepad to aim with, it will be harder on something so small. I'm just hoping it wont feel like aiming with a laptop trackpad.
