I think the best way to sum up my thoughts on this controller is that it seems perfectly designed for the kind of game where using a controller is less preferable than not playing it at all.
Tell us whats wrong with the controller then.
The goddamn track pad controls. I've been saying this on multiple threads (that you've seen by the way). Simulated analog sticks don't work. Go play a shooter or a racing game on a phone or laptop and you should see immediately why.

Because they're just ripping off laptop track pads and totally havent invested time and money into developing something thats not a phone or laptop.
Good logic there, did you even read the page?
Tell us whats wrong with the controller then.
I have literally no idea how you'd play a game like Super Meat Boy in a way which isn't less comfortable than a regular joystick and face-buttons controller.

Yeah. The page straight up says it's two trackpads. Oh, and they double as cheap speakers. I guess thats kinda cool. Not giving up analog sticks/KB+M for that though.
Again, as I said, simulated analog sticks don't work. That's what the controller is doing.

Seems easy, the trackpad simulates WASD, and you can click it for stuff like jumping.
Trackpads, by their nature, are less physical than thumbsticks. By themselves, they are “light touch” devices and don’t offer the kind of visceral feedback that players get from pushing joysticks around. As we investigated trackpad-based input devices, it became clear through testing that we had to find ways to add more physicality to the experience. It also became clear that “rumble”, as it has been traditionally implemented (a lopsided weight spun around a single axis), was not going to be enough. Not even close.
The Steam Controller is built around a new generation of super-precise haptic feedback, employing dual linear resonant actuators. These small, strong, weighted electro-magnets are attached to each of the dual trackpads. They are capable of delivering a wide range of force and vibration, allowing precise control over frequency, amplitude, and direction of movement.
This haptic capability provides a vital channel of information to the player - delivering in-game information about speed, boundaries, thresholds, textures, action confirmations, or any other events about which game designers want players to be aware. It is a higher-bandwidth haptic information channel than exists in any other consumer product that we know of. As a parlour trick they can even play audio waveforms and function as speakers.
Go read through this again.

If anyone can actually get through super meat boy like that, then my hat is off to them, because I refuse to believe that setup will be good enough for some of the shit in that game.
Go read through this again.
Honestly, I have and i'm not seeing fucking anything beyond marketing buzzwords like "super-precise haptic feedback" and "linear resonant actuators."
Honestly, I have and i'm not seeing fucking anything beyond marketing buzzwords like "super-precise haptic feedback" and "linear resonant actuators."
Fucking really?
High tech track pads are still track pads.
Yeah. The page straight up says it's two trackpads. Oh, and they double as cheap speakers. I guess thats kinda cool. Not giving up analog sticks/KB+M for that though.

so you really didn't read what they are then at all
god damn
So you're just straight up ignoring what they're saying and handwaving everything as "buzzwords".
Then you go complain about the trackpads.
Nice job.
Honestly, I have and i'm not seeing fucking anything beyond marketing buzzwords like "super-precise haptic feedback" and "linear resonant actuators."
The trackpads can be mapped to anything, it's not just pretending to be a pair of joysticks.
Fucking really?
Motherfucking abso-goddamn-lutely. Why don't you point out why it's so special then?
High tech track pads are still track pads.
So?
Honestly, I have and i'm not seeing fucking anything beyond marketing buzzwords like "super-precise haptic feedback" and "linear resonant actuators."
okay
those words have meanings, and practical effects on how we use things.
so much edge
Motherfucking abso-goddamn-lutely. Why don't you point out why it's so special then?
Fucking read it and stop ignoring what its saying and you'll know why.
so much edge
Again with the buzzwords
I'LL CALL HIM EDGY THAT'LL SHOW HIM WHY THE CONTROLLER IS GREAT
[editline]27th September 2013[/editline]
Fucking read it and stop ignoring what its saying and you'll know why.
I legit like how you aren't/can't point out why it's special because i'm really not seeing it.
So?
So they're still track pads.
Which are shit for gaming.
Again with the buzzwords
I'LL CALL HIM EDGY THAT'LL SHOW HIM WHY THE CONTROLLER IS GREAT

Dude i just quoted the whole thing which you're acknowleding that you're ignoring.
Motherfucking abso-goddamn-lutely. Why don't you point out why it's so special then?
because it has those features and those features are real aspects of development that people have been trying to implement for years, so why is it so weird to think valve, a billion dollar company, can't afford to hire people who know better than you what to do to make these systems work?
So they're still track pads.
Which are shit for gaming.
Did you actually read anything about this.
So they're still track pads.

It's not a laptop.
because it has those features and those features are real aspects of development that people have been trying to implement for years, so why is it so weird to think valve, a billion dollar company, can't afford to hire people who know better than you what to do to make these systems work?
"valve knows what they're doing they can't be wrong IT HAS TO WORK BECAUSE THEY'RE VALVE"
Dude i just quoted the whole thing which you're acknowleding that you're ignoring.
Again...

well when you swear like you are, and all caps rage like you are, what am i to think? You're clearly not going to listen to anything anyone says, and just dismiss it as PR bullshit and call yourself an expert on a technology more than anyone who could work on it.
OR SHOULD I TYPE LIKE THIS SO YOU GET THE POINT
[editline]27th September 2013[/editline]
"valve knows what they're doing they can't be wrong IT HAS TO WORK BECAUSE THEY'RE VALVE"
Again...
Not what I said is it. No. What I said is that if you can afford to hire experts in a field, they would. Would they not? Would they just field this thing absent of any reason?
"valve knows what they're doing they can't be wrong IT HAS TO WORK BECAUSE THEY'RE VALVE"
Again...
Dude what the hell are you even doing.
Okay, want something else?
The most prominent elements of the Steam controller are its two circular trackpads. Driven by the player’s thumbs, each one has a high-resolution trackpad as its base. It is also clickable, allowing the entire surface to act as a button. The trackpads allow far higher fidelity input than has previously been possible with traditional handheld controllers. Steam gamers, who are used to the input associated with PCs, will appreciate that the Steam Controller’s resolution approaches that of a desktop mouse.
Valve is primarily an FPS focused developer, so im going to trust them on that.
OR SHOULD I TYPE LIKE THIS SO YOU GET THE POINT
Maybe if you would actually tell me whats so special about it instead of resorting to petty insults and similar bullshit.
It says right goddamn there it's a trackpad and we have people going IT'S NOT A TRACKPAD GOSH
So they're still track pads.
Which are shit for gaming.
And you know these function the same as those how?
Dude what the hell are you even doing.
Okay, want something else?

Again with the "it's ok valve knows what they're doing"
I'm not seeing why the trackpads are going to work.
Maybe if you would actually tell me whats so special about it instead of resorting to petty insults and similar bullshit.
It says right goddamn there it's a trackpad and we have people going IT'S NOT A TRACKPAD GOSH
No one's saying it isn't a trackpad.
They're saying it's not the same kind of trackpad.
Are you so mad you literally aren't reading what anyone says?
