It can be used to create nasty CFWs, but not sending PSN or emails that are "officially" from Sony.

If they weren't retarded about a number of things, it would be difficult.
Then again. They stored passwords in plain text. Nobody should be surprised if you can do some amazing malicious crap with this.

If you download untrusted firmware you can get people stealing your CC / PSN info directly from your PS3. But that has been the case for any custom firmware.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but does this mean we can put mods on PS3 games now?
it's possible yeah, but the hoops you'll have to jump through to get them working would probably way too much work to be feasible
What would be great is PS2 emulation coming from this so those of us without the launch consoles may play our PS2 classics again.
I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but does this mean we can put mods on PS3 games now?
Most likely no, as this would require the games themselves to support it.
Maybe games like FONV or Skyrim could, but I doubt it.
As long as this isn't used maliciously against other users, I'm OK with this...

the reason they dropped ps2 support is because they removed the actual hardware that the ps3 made use of to emulate the ps2 games to make it cost less to produce
Speaking of, what's he up to nowadays?
He still messes around with jailbreaking iDevices, he gave up on the PS3 though.

Short answer: Yes... kinda
Long answer. Console games are frequently so heavily optimized for the specific hardware that modifications are going to be very limited in terms of their possible scope and effects. Then again, the PS3 is a bitch to design for and is probably massively underutilized. As a result, you may actually see modding develop to a limited extent.
Although it's not likely that a significant portion of the modding scene is just going to jump off the pc where they've been for the past several decades.

They switched to software emulation and then dropped that
what the fuck?

Sadly there are other ways to maliciously attack others by spoofing hardware ids (hard-ish to get from what I understand) and sending the same message a PS3 does to sony when it detects CFW - thus suspending other people.
I have not heard much about that since 2011-ish when I heard about it.
It's a shame the HV GPU drivers weren't developed very much at all, otherwise the PS3 would make a nice HTPC.
Suppose it's time to read up on which CFW's are good and how to get them.
You'll need to wait for the lv0 key to be utilized by trusted sources - which may take some time since the last PSN enabled CFW was from 3.56.

Depends on whether they can fool PSN. I think it's for certain that they can trick PSN into thinking the PS3 is unmodded, so you won't be cut off from the network, and maybe you'll be able to maintain several user identities. But I don't expect you'll be able to impersonate other accounts without having the actual account details.

They can fool PSN but this leak does not allow for PSN impersonation. All bets are off once you install a CFW though in terms of other people potentially stealing sessions and other data.

He settled with Sony under the agreement that he would not attempt to hack any of their products again and they would not attempt any sort of legal action against him.
Well. Gonna go get my PS3 fixed from the yellow ring it got last year. Might invest in a blu ray drive and discs too.

He can't even use a toaster anymore.
Last time we have CFW the online service for quite a few games went to shit (there is no form of anti-cheat as it isn't expected, and a fair few games have development commands in the retail copies as they are inaccessible normally) and a fucking ton of "backup" loaders. No real Linux installers, no interesting homebrew apps that used the PS3s' potential.
Yeah, great way to make the gaming community look good guys! Pirate all the games and then wonder why we have stupid DRM and pricing! As nice as a more open system is, the bullshit that comes along with it, and the majority of the user base for these consoles tends to lead to piracy, retardation and general douchebaggery.
And this was such a nice neighbourhood...
3...2...1... Sony:"RECALL OUT ON ALL PS3 HARDWARE! ITS DEFECTIVE!"

It was kinda awful. Software emulation usually is pretty shit for specialist hardware like recent consoles.

Woah, back the fuck up.
Making a system more open is a bad thing because the developers got lazy.
Then all the sudden massive amounts of PS3s just start dying inexplicably.

It was fine. I couldn't notice a difference from the 60GB Hardware emulation

I didn't have a problem either.

A system with no precautions users can take to avoid malicious acts of others is kinda bad. Consoles, being developed for one purpose only, are not something that responds well to being opened up like this. There is very little a user can do to defend themselves if someone is ruining their online experience short of quitting, and as some games show (largely IW Engine games) you may be "infected" with whatever the host was running.

I didn't really get too much time to test it out. The PS3 I tried it on was a friends, which died a few days later. But it may have just been the game not being fully supported by the emulator. Or the disk being scratched to all hell. Because all I remember was artifacting graphics and sound.
Fucking Sony, get your shit together! Fucking do things right or not at all.
Fuck

They can't really fix anything, sadly. This problem has been around since 2006.
The 3.55 exploit was fun. It was great having emulators on my ps3.
I'll remain skeptical of this being "impossible" for Sony to fix, considering what happened last time.

It was known that they could fix it last time. The breech was not hardware level access.
This time it is. Unless they have some magical inception chip built into their system, this is as deep as it goes.
