PS3 LV0 Keys Released (the ACTUALLY UNPATCHABLE KEY)
They can't really fix anything, sadly. This problem has been around since 2006.
I just hope they don't brick all ps3's. I've already have 1 yellow light on me, had my psn account comprimised and now lv0 keys for people to abuse. I really don't see why Sony wouldn't just shut everything down now that their console is compromised. Basically my point is I've spent to much money just to see this go down and not be angry at Sony.

If sony bricks everyones PS3s, the amount of lawsuits would be unfathomable.
They switched to software emulation and then dropped that
what the fuck?
Actually, this is only somewhat true. Sony being Sony dropped the chip AND the emulator that was used on some PS3s because they felt they wouldn't make any profit on the remastered ps2 games.
Last time we have CFW the online service for quite a few games went to shit (there is no form of anti-cheat as it isn't expected, and a fair few games have development commands in the retail copies as they are inaccessible normally) and a fucking ton of "backup" loaders. No real Linux installers, no interesting homebrew apps that used the PS3s' potential.
Yeah, great way to make the gaming community look good guys! Pirate all the games and then wonder why we have stupid DRM and pricing! As nice as a more open system is, the bullshit that comes along with it, and the majority of the user base for these consoles tends to lead to piracy, retardation and general douchebaggery.
And this was such a nice neighbourhood...
Isn't that why Sony removed the OtherOS feature anyway :v:?

Something along these lines. It allowed for much easier access to the hypervisor after a few exploits were found here and there without the need for too much faffing. Or as far as I can remember, it may have been something else, not the HV.
In a way I think companies like Sega had to do with it.
Why let people emulate it for free, when you can charge them 3 dollars a piece for genesis games.
[editline]24th October 2012[/editline]
I mean, I remember it being shut off as the Sega collection started to come. justsaying.
This really is Sony's annus horribilis
Well it sort of happened near the end of the ps3's life span, ps4 is most likely getting announced next year.
Good
I still don't like Sony at all though
I may have a reason to dust off my PS3 again, huzzah.
I never did understand why Sony felt the need to gimp features to sell more of something.
DRM.
The 3.55 exploit was fun. It was great having emulators on my ps3.
I'll remain skeptical of this being "impossible" for Sony to fix, considering what happened last time.
It is impossible, the key is burnt into a ROM inside the PS3. Unless they recalled every PS3 and replaced that chip they cannot do anything apart from change the key on new ones. However, I think doing that means they would have major compatablty issues.
Oh dear. And so the doors were opened to modding and piracy again.
Sony had a nice two year run after being crippled back in 2010 by team fail0verflow. This is very good news for the homebrew scene.
HELL YES, now i can blow the dust off my 60GB PS3.
What i think will happen, is that they'll just swap keys on newer ones, and basically force people to buy the new consoles to get access to new games and such. But probably not too likely with the next generation looming so close.

Geohot glitched the RAM using OtherOS and a hardware exploit to gain control over the HV. This is when Sony released firmware 3.21 to disable it.
Basically, every PS3 currently in existence can have custom firmware installed to it, and there is no way for Sony to stop it.
I wasn't even aware of cfw for PS3, it's really great on my PSP.
Where can I get some info on how to do all that? We should have a custom firmware thread in GGD

there was a thread in one of the HW/SW sections when the fail0verflow thing came out, dig it up if you can

Hopefully a new thread will spring up due to this, if I understand it correctly, due to the ps3 being more cpu based than gpu based(like most consoles) it would be better for software emulation of console games than a pc.
Might put CFW back on my PS3. Can't wait to see if someone makes a version :v:
I don't even think Sony really would care at this point with the next gen consoles obviously coming out within the next year or two.
And to keep the PS3 secure all they would have to do is outright brick consoles they detect using this hack. Though honestly this would be really easy to stop - either block network access or make it such things just don't happen, which should be possible if you have control on the hardware level.

Then they get slammed with the biggest lawdildo ever invented.
DEAR SONY: Don't fight the people who want to install linux on PS3's
your wasting your time.
Fucking Sony, get your shit together! Fucking do things right or not at all.
Fuck
Give them a break, they created what was by far the longest lasting security system a console has ever had.
They did it best, but it's always hard to create something completely hackerproof.
As long as someone has access to it, it's possible for everyone to get access if something goes wrong.
the description of whats going on sounds like we're playing metal gear
last time we got the lvl1 keycard and then we got the lvl2 keycard
now we just need to enter the pal code and stop the nuclear launch
Guess I should finally start using my PS3 again, too lazy to play the games I own for it but Linux and homebrew might make it worth it again.
Looks like it's time for Sony to throw another shitfit, this is going to be horrible considering what they did the last time this happened
Read this if you need a reminder of what went down during the geoh0t incident

Its out of the bag gentlemen. Nice going Sony where's your PS4
With this leak playing online with even digital images in a hard drive is possible. As long as the online game doesn't require a key to activate like how BF3 does. ANY GAME. You could probably modify image files like adding custom content to games like GTA4 without extreme modding for the PS3.
Now let's just wait for someone to use a usable CFW (won't be long)
Most likely no, as this would require the games themselves to support it.
Maybe games like FONV or Skyrim could, but I doubt it.
Super Smash Brother Brawl mods
Because a different game on a different console is a comparable situation
it's fucking memory editing dude. it's going to be exactly the same if it's on a fucking neo geo
