Not really no.
Explain.
I go to a store to the magazine section, pick one up, and read the entire thing. I put it back instead of taking it to the cashier and paying a ridiculous amount for a few pieces of colored paper. Piracy.
I don't think that's piracy
1. It's not theft, it's copying.
THIS ARGUMENT MAKES ME FUCKING RAGE BECAUSE IT COULD NOT BE MORE WRONG Regardless of there being an unlimited number of copies, you are expected to pay to get your own! Therefore, you can assume that obtaining a copy without paying IS A FORM OF THEFT! JESUS FUCK HOW IS IT SO HARD TO GET THIS That being said, this situation is bullshit. Obama should not be pandering to whiny corporations who are upset that they can't screw their customers over because the customers fight back.
I don't think that's piracy
It's more like pirating something and then deleting it once you're finished, because he doesn't keep a copy.
-snip-
Explain.
don't kill me if I'm wrong but I believe stealing would mean that you take something from someone without his or her permission. If you were at a shop and you grabbed a game, put it into your bag and walked away with it, you'd have taken something from the shop, without its permission. If you'd have something, and copy it and give it away, you didn't really take something withouth his/her permission. or atleast, that's what I think [editline]07:35PM[/editline]
It's more like pirating something and then deleting it once you're finished, because he doesn't keep a copy.
but isn't the concept of piracy based on copying an original?
Explain.
Well in your example, you are simply stating that because someone gives away a product of similar qualities, it is automatically piracy and therefore illegal. If we accepted this as a true statement, it would classify 90% of open source software as pirated software, as much of it does a similar job as paid software.
Awesomecaek gets it right. [editline]01:11PM[/editline] It IS copyright infringement if the uploader posts it in full without the respective trademark but most of them do post it so
It's still copyright infringement.
It's still copyright infringement.
Not really unless you sell it.
Legally, it's still copyright infringement.
To think I rooted for Obama in the election.
"This is theft, clear and simple. It's smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany's and reaching in and grabbing what's in the window."
So when someone downloads a music album illegally, they are committing forced entry, trespassing, and robbery? Stop using straw man arguments.
And MW2 was pirated over 500k times if my memory serves true
The game wasn't worth $60 anyway.

But copying is taking the value.
Its stupid that artists don't get to make money from their own product. Don't say "but they're rich already". That doesn't justify theft.
Artists make very little money from their albums compared to how much they make at concerts. If you pirate music, go to the band's concert if you want them to make money, THAT's how you support artists.
The game wasn't worth $60 anyway.
It's worth nothing if you can get it for free.
whaa? a mainstream politician doesn't support my insular pet cause that is significantly less important that most other aspects of his policy in terms of it's effect on human life and well-being? WELL FUCK THAT GUY
Legally, it's still copyright infringement.
Sure, but those laws were invented to protect artists, not corporations. :) Anyway, piracy isn't exactly stealing because they aren't stealing the physical item (which cost money to produce), they're copying the raw movie/game/album, in which the real artists have already received payment for (and will receive more from royalties from merchandise). Furthermore, most pirates download things they wouldn't have bought in the first place, thus "profit losses" are a myth, especially considering record labels made record profits these past few years. No pun intended.
The only good DRM are the ones used for Arma 2. They turn you into birds and force you to buy it. On the other hand, it gives a demo, and good patches. And it have a good community because its good! If only companies could stick to this, then maybe people won't pirate that much. Yeah, I do know its a little off topic.......

No pun intended.
Profit losses are not nearly as high as calculated, but that doesn't mean they are non existent. Piracy is not some moral crusade people make it out to be. Up and coming artists (especially ones who make all of their music electronically), DO make all of their money from 'album' sales. Are they pirated from any less? Of course not. It helps the conscious to think that only some faceless, nameless corporation will be losing money off of piracy, but that's not the case. Do I think piracy needs to be stamped out or crushed with extreme prejudice? No, of course not. But that doesn't make it right.
Piracy is wrong.
Piracy is wrong and should be stopped, but compared to other problems going on right now it should be low priority.

I think that this policy he made was a very bad decision, because you can't prevent piracy. Other than that, nope.
American right here :patriot: I want to fucking move to Europe, this place is full of dumb shits.
Don't move to the UK, probability of the Digital Economy Bill.
