I'll argue that he is petty, insignificant and dramatically overblown then.

Nice reasoning there, ran out of arguments?

Probably be that 7000 Calorie cookie they apparently have.

He just entered the thread to call everyone who disagreed with his opinion ignorant, why am I not allowed to call him ignorant for holding this belief?
RustySpannerz;29724478']I feel so sorry for Valve, nothing they do is right in the eyes of the community.
I personally think that from the beginning they should have left Tf2 the way it was and just done what they did with TF2 to a totally new game, that would have been hugely successful.
I don't know if you noticed, but TF2 is hugely successful. For good reason, too. Think about it. Remember how amazing it was when it first came out? It was perfectly balanced, with different roles that could pop up at any point, requiring unique strategies for each. Eventually, people got used to it. It would have died right there without the weapon updates. They required new strategies and allowed the classes to take on new roles. Then with the aesthetics and trading it gained a new life that allowed it to grow even more. It's a brilliant platform for a game.
They better do an episode three and do Half-Life 3 largely after half-life 2's timeline, or at least large enough that you have a brand new environment.

If you had bothered to read my post, I called you out for a lack of argument. He explained pretty damned well why he didn't think that Valve deserved any of the shit the community (or half of Facepunch, at least) gives them, and you resorted to this: "I'll argue that he is petty, insignificant and dramatically overblown then."

Yes, the same way the Counter-Strike and TFC died.

He ignoring most of what people have to say about WHY they don't like the shit Valve does, and for that he is petty for calling out the people here. He seems to think Valve is some perfect company that does nothing, wrong; BULLSHIT, Valve is more than capable of majorly fucking things up badly and making terrible decisions.
I used that argument as a retort because it was a rude retort to the rude post I was quoting.
Counter-Strike has 40K people playing at any given time. Are you daft?
Which is exactly what TF2 would have been without these dumb updates.
A perfect sequel to TFC, an instant classic with a fanbase who would always love it for its gameplay.

You do know that Episodes 1-3 are Half-Life 3, right?
fuck valve
Yes, the same way the Counter-Strike and TFC died.
Good point. At the very least, it wouldn't be as big as it is now. Those updates keep me and quite a few people I know coming back. I don't know about any numbers on this, but it does at least seem that way.
The TF2 model works, TF2 itself does not.
Or they will come in, be utterly confused as it's nothing like the trailers for the game, and shortly after they'll give up on the game. I've had many of my friends who owned this game since release stop playing it because they were confused, but I've also had friends who bought it recently but were too confused to keep playing it.
At least we had psuedo confirmation that the Half-Life series is being worked on.
What it entails, I don't know, but Gabe more or less said that it's at least on the back burner.
Woo. :buddy:
Half-Life is apparently the slowest! [Laughs] Although, from the outside world, we have no evidence that Half-Life is working on any frequency at all. [Laughs]

The TF2 model works, TF2 itself does not.
That is a pretty clever way to put it actually.
I have huge faith in the Valve development team, I think Half-Life 3 will be fucking awesome. :iia:

First 2/3rds have been, what even has the possibility of making the quality drop, unless Gabe gets a heart attack :ohdear:
[editline]10th May 2011[/editline]
Well proper writing would be "First 2/3rd has been"
Gabe has to eat a hat whenever someone makes a Gabe Fat Joke on the Internet.
Is that why they made the potato hat?
Well actually they might change it with Episode 3 and name it "Half-Life 3" just 'cause.
If this thread is anything to judge Valve's customer base from, then they're pretty much pissing in the wind trying to please a fanbase like this. Nowhere else have I seen people so critical of everything Valve does, spouting horribly inane bullshit and calling them a failure so fast along with every new thing they try to do. It's both outrageous and pathetic. Not only that, but you all seem to believe that what Valve does revolves around you. Team Fortress 2 is one of the most successful PC games, and while you might think it's shit and it's a failure, to them it certainly isn't. For every single person that's angry about the updates, there's a few hundred more that enjoy them all the same. The amount of petty anthills you're turning into mountains is embarrassing. I personally dislike TF2 (and always have, it's just not for me), but that doesn't prevent half of my friends list from playing it all the time. That doesn't prevent Valve from taking in majority customer feedback and changing their game based on it and improving it and making such a successful game. Nothing so far that Valve has done has made me lose faith in them, and anyone who constantly complains about every last thing and saying they're digging their own grave should probably realize that maybe they're not the center of attention for once and realize that Valve isn't out to please you and specifically you. They're doing what's in their best interest and what's in the best interest of their entire range of customers.
You are a massive dumbass.
I'm not saying what Valve has already done is shit, it isn't. I, and many others, are worrying that valve is going to turn into shit starting with things like this. You're the one who's taking criticism and portraying it in a comically overblown negative light. TF2 was great when it was first released, but it's rapidly turning into a cash cow for developing code to put hats into games because LOL HATS!!1 (also money from 10-13 year olds overburdened with disposal income!) When I first played TF2 when it was on sale, i loved it. Everything was in place. There was no doubt about what you were supposed to do. The heavy destroys shit and hates babies. The demoman blows shit up and is an alcoholic stereotypical scotman, and therefore hilarious. The pyro is pretty much the best fucking character in any game ever. Now, the heavy destroys shit and hates babies but can also take bullets to the head because he has robotic gloves but might be slower if he has a certain kind of minigun, the demoman OMG EYELANDER HEADZ HEADZ HEAADDDDZ LOLUMADBRO IT TAKEZ SKILL, and the Pyro is still the best fucking character in any game ever. Notice the difference?
To illustrate this, allow me to state a experience one of my friends had when I showed him TF2 by letting him play it on my PC when he was over. He honestly could not figure out what to do and kept asking me why he was taking so much damage from fire, and why one enemy could take more damage than the other despite both being the same class, and why about 59% of the server had brown hats on and the other 41% had red ones and why they kept bitching at eachother on mic. TF2 is turning into shit, and Valve itself may be close behind. THAT's what all this worry and rage is about.

I know he said that they're done with episodic stuff but does that mean that Episode 3 will be a full game and won't be released under Episode 3 and isntead as Half-Life 3 or that they will likely not make more episode games after Episode 3 or both
[editline]10th May 2011[/editline]
Wow dammit I need to refresh.
i lost hope in Valve a while back

Pretty sure it just means that they won't make any more episodic games after that, I don't think they will change the title.
They said the TF2 model, not the Activision model.
they sell the levels by one model at a time?
They could atleast give us some more concept art. I mean the only thing we have so far sare some old concept pics from like 4 years ago.
Pretty sure it just means that they won't make any more episodic games after that, I don't think they will change the title.
I do hope so. Kind of.
[editline]10th May 2011[/editline]
I guess.
This honestly sounds like a shitty model. I would rather have full games than something dished out to me in set intervals.
Now that Duke Nukem Forever's finally being released, Episode 3 is stepping up to take its place.
Great.. :colbert:
So this practically means that they'll be dishing out more half-assed hats and boring updates simply because the mindless majority likes them and most importantly, buys them. A "Get it while it's hot" type of phenomenon.
Fuck that. I want my independent and creative Valve back. The online business (MannCo) is fine though, brilliant actually, it's just that the flow of money can be very misleading as to how they could make their games (like TF2) more easily approachable and fun for everyone.
Yeah, pretty much. They'll be an out and out "continuous content and platform provider" within five years, ie, publisher, ie pretty much the same as any other giant ass publisher, with the exception that they're private, and their digital subscriber service is already launched and mainstream. Welp, it was fun while it lasted, and they did make some great games back in the day. Hopefully someone else will take up the indie banner and do things their own way successfully, and we can get another cycle of badass games that have a small yet dedicated and strong (and most importantly, creative) community.
