FBI offering $10,000 reward for help catching people who point lasers at planes

Now that people know about this they will surely do it.
I could see this going horribly wrong with kids who might see this as a dare (because like it or not, some kids are troublemaking brats by nature)
the difference is the laser pointers they are having problems with aren't the cheapo office stuff a kid could get ahold of, its the big purpose built to melt stuff ones that can put a bright spot on a plane
These lasers are scary as fuck.
The more powerful ones can blind you faster than you can blink at close range.
Apparently you just hear a pop as your retina melts.
My physics tutor has lasers that make your eye explode if you looked directly into the beam.
I wonder, would one way mirrors as windows (or behind the actual windows for strength reasons) be a decent way of making it so that the pilot isn't affected.
one way mirrors only work because of the limited dynamic range of our eyes - for them to work in this situation the inside would have to be significantly brighter than the laser itself (and you wouldn't be able to see anything outside)

Mirrored glass only looks like a mirror if it's extremely dark on one side and extremely bright on the other. How do you think light get through the glass in the first place? Same way as conventional glass. The laser would still go through. It would act like sunglasses, letting less light in, but it would mean night or low light flying would be harder.
lasers will also damage NVGs/IR cameras and set off missile lock warnings.

Missiles don't use visible light lasers for targeting and thermal cameras aren't sensitive to visible light anyway.
laser glasses for pilots soon?
man you got to have one HELL of a steady hand to hit someone in the eye with a laser when they are so far away they arent even visible to the naked eye in an object moving quickly across the sky. The chance of them actually blinding the pilot is incredibly improbable. It's not a good thing to do, but the risk of something actually HAPPENING is so slim a witch hunt isnt really needed here.
Yeah its not so bad it only has the potential to cause airplane crashes, no biggie.
Grade-A dumbass you are.
I'm going to have a friend turn me in for that $10,000 reward. Then we'll split it 50/50.

The felony part will probably make it not worth it
1. Find homeless person
2. give them laser pointer
3. Pay them $100 per airplane they shine it at
4. Turn them in.
5. Profit
6. Repeat
Solve homelessness and get rich while doing it.

Solve homelessness by ruining the lives of people who are already victims :D

lol homeless aren't people silly
Does this means during war time, one can theoretically take down an attack helicopter with just a laser pointer?
Does this means during war time, one can theoretically take down an attack helicopter with just a laser pointer?
the pilots usually wear their tinted visors (not sure if they help at all) and also you can easily shoot someone pointing a gigantic noticeable laser at you.

in the video posted earlier the pilot was saying that all it does is point out who is shining the light, so if you don't manage to hit the pilot in the eye on the first try, i'd assume you'd be dead before you got another chance
Hold up two fingers in a V shape with the aircraft between them. Shine the laser with your other hand back and forwards. That's how you aim at an aircraft.
Usually you do it with a mirror and sunlight to signal to them for some reason, not with a laser
I don't know if this story was true but in Utah some kid was pointing a laser at an apache, within 10 minutes the house was swarmed with police.
The FBI would probably have an easier time just sending a helicopter up and every little shit who points a laser at it gets a missile to the face.
The troublemakers are using the overpowered laser pointers that are visible for miles. They're blinding if you look at them - and highly dangerous to one's eyesight.

Green lasers are for pansies, real men use 2 watt blue diode lasers
Missiles don't use visible light lasers for targeting and thermal cameras aren't sensitive to visible light anyway.
You can actually break NVGs using a powerful laser pointer of good quality. Also, I don't mean "break" as in temporarily blinding them either, you'll fry the image intensifier tube. Good quality Gen 3 or Gen 4's have image tubes that are often autogated, which means they'll automatically switch off to prevent failure but this won't happen if you have a powerful laser.
Mind you, this is all assuming that the laser beam hits the lens of the NVGs directly, something that is extremely unlikely to happen to any pilots being harassed by a dickhead with a laser pointer.
I did that once because i thought it was a star turned out I was wrong but nothing has happened
...well yet

Knock knock

I was sort of thinking the same. Why not stock the helicopters with a bunch of these laser glasses just in case?
I could see this going horribly wrong with kids who might see this as a dare (because like it or not, some kids are troublemaking brats by nature)
And they'll go to federal fucking prison, I'm sure they'll find that pretty daring.
I've had the misfortune of having a high powered green laser pointed at me out at sea in the night.
Literally blinding.
Oh hey, I saw a thread on 4chan yesterday about some guy who supposedly did this kind of thing, everyone told him he was a massive retard (well, more than normal)

It's also unlikely to be hit by a meteorite and survive. But it has happened
it only has to happen once under the right circumstances and disaster

It could theoretically be taken advantage of though to create "minefields" of remote-aimed lasers if some group has the finances and the motives, however.
