I propose forcibly removing all women and children from that community and leave all of the men behind. Then erect a 15' high wall around the entire community and tell them they're free to continue their community for however many generations it lasts (ie. none.)
Then take all of the confiscated women and children and give them re-education to show them they're not required to be treated like shit just because they have a vagina and breasts.
you realize the men involved in this are just as brainwashed through tradition and upbringing as the women and children?
Fuckin hell, I live right across the Hudson River from this place. It's a pretty conservative region of New York, but this is ridiculous.
I don't think this is a big deal, especially when it's just one little village that is almost completely homogeneous. Yes, it's backasswards and stupid and superstitious and I pity anybody that subjects themselves to living in that community, but it's not really trampling on anyone's civil rights. Living in a super-religious town means you give a certain amount of tacit consent to the community enforcing it's norms. Besides, signs can be ignored. I ignore a hundred idiotic, ignorant anti-abortion signs every time I drive across southern Indiana.
That doesn't excuse it in any way, shape, or form. Seriously.
Segregation used to exist in the United States, and then we removed it, because we realized it was socially fucking dumb.
And these people bring a form of it back?
Absolutely not. I don't see any reason for them to be allowed to do this.
