How many African villages could have been given clean water with that money? 11 million by 7,000 (at the most) for essential hygiene and water sources and buildings per village- 1,571 villages. Cool beans. Tens of thousands of lives made better, or a Christmas tree?
Why is it their job to help a shithole country? It is their money they can do whatever they want.
Why is it their job to help a shithole country? It is their money they can do whatever they want.
The fact that Africa is a shithole is the fault of other continents.

I guess all of us should be donating our money to africa except for what we need to survive if we use this logic, because a $1000 computer upgrade could have fed some starving africans? I'm not arguing in favor of them buying this christmas tree, because yes it is a stupid waste of money to spend that much, but just the logic you're using doesn't really work.
The fact that Africa is a shithole is the fault of other continents.
That and the whole apartheid thing didn't help anyone.
The fact that Africa is a shithole is the fault of other continents.
Rhodesia was doing pretty good...
The Emirates probably have no concept of poverty.
The whole city was built by near-slave labour, poverty could be seen every day there but nobody opens their eyes. UAE is pretty disgusting.
Good example of accidental negative PR And precisely how Not to deal with it
They could have hung 12 Bugatti Veyrons from that tree instead.
That and the whole apartheid thing didn't help anyone.
Then again, the apartheid was a direct concequence of Dutch colonization.
The only way to waste money is to destroy it. To use it is not to waste it.

I mean, the first world lives extremely extravagantly, while the third world suffers just for being the third world. We have the means and the ability to help the third world, if everyone just donated the money needed for that one 1000$ upgrade who could go without it.
The water would be stolen by militias and the villagers killed to keep it under wraps. Good job, you just killed 30,000 people.
You know, if water wasn't a scarce resource in Africa, that wouldn't happen. Maybe if people did spend their money on aiding Africa instead of on giant christmas trees, so that there wasn't a shortage of fresh water sources, then there would be no need to go to war over fresh water and kill for it. And to be fair, africa is kind of the shithole it is because of the mass resource abuse by colonial Europeans and the power vacuum they left when they just up and decided to get out without any sort of support or significant organization. But I suppose that's long in the past and we should focus more on the issue now than the issue then. Also, the point of that post was to show that it was a gross misuse of money and that there's far better things to spend it on.
For that money I'd expect the entire tree to be made out of diamonds [editline]20th December 2010[/editline]
You know, if water wasn't a scarce resource in Africa, that wouldn't happen. It makes you wonder what you'd do with that amount of money.
Fuck africa, if you really have so much money, use it to make your country better, not some continent that has no change on you.
My country already has the resources to improve itself. It just simply misuses them. Africa on the other hand has no resources to improve itself. We fucked it over, we continue to do so. Least we can do is try to get them back on their feet in stable, self-sufficient economies. Africans don't get a choice in where they're born- their unfortunate location should not be grounds for their worth, or their needs.

They overrun UN soldiers, we can't make water magically appear. Your visionary society is not going to save them.

But I do assume that the lives of the people can be improved at least a little with a little more care and effort. Iunno, the whole point of me saying that was to how there was better uses for the money, not necessarily to get into what I'm getting into.
Sorry, Didn't want to spark a argument. Apologies. I came off as a ass.
As much as in poor taste it is, it's a pretty wicked example of opulence. This stuff is obv. the worst in the rich Middle-Eastern countries, they've been so overwhelmed by riches and greed it'll be a while before they return to normalcy when it comes to handling money
They better use that for the next 5000 years to get their money's worth.

One farm over here that is a few miles big contains more than 300,000,000 TONS of iron ore. Africa has more than enough to sustain itself thank you fucking very much.
Can't wait till the oil bubble pops for these country's.
