I'd give them the password only if they give me a warrant saying they need access to my hard drive.
its worth it to make sure no one finds his porn
Without warrant: You can decline that a cop search your car/house/possessions/whatever.
With warrant: You don't have a single choice, except to do some court stuff.

That's wrong, A warrant just makes any evidence found against you allowed in a court.
The only time a court will allow something with out a warrant is if its something like murder.
In law he did nothing illegal because you do have the right to remain silent and you have the right to not incriminate yourself. Giving the password would be self incrimination so the cops would have to go back to court to legally get the password by going before a judge.

Are you dumb? Try reading the law before talking about it:
RIPA regulates the manner in which certain public bodies may conduct surveillance and access a person's electronic communications. The Act:

enables certain public bodies to demand that an ISP provide access to a customer's communications in secret;

enables mass surveillance of communications in transit;

enables certain public bodies to demand ISPs fit equipment to facilitate surveillance;

enables certain public bodies to demand that someone hand over keys to protected information;

allows certain public bodies to monitor people's internet activities;

prevents the existence of interception warrants and any data collected with them from being revealed in court.

That's from wikipedia.
As much as that summary is rather vague, it quite clearly states it's illegal to say no.
And I thought my 21 character password was secure.

Different country's different laws.
16 weeks is better than several years for getting busted for having illegal content on the hard drive

Um, having a search warrant automatically allows them to search any computers or any other form of digital storage you own.

But if you had pedoporn which would be a far longer sentance you still would?
Boy, your dumb. :downs:

In fact, if the only options are "Yes" or "No" and "Yes" is the only answer which won't lead you to prison (for this particular sentence anyway), isn't that like a form of entrapment?
Lets say he wasn't a pedo freak, and just didn't want them snooping around and he said no, what the fuck.

If you had something illegal that could influence the rest of your life, No way in hell you would... shut the hell up and stop pretending.
Holy shit I want to do this just so I can lock up my brothers computer with a password he'll never figure out :v:
The police are probably well aware of the legality of having an encrypted harddrive. Think again though:
The guy is being suspected of having CP and when they find an encrypted HDD after searching his house with a warrant, he refuses to give up the password? Surely if he's got nothing to hide, he could just give the password?
Yeah, try proving your innocence now.
You don't prove you are innocent, you disprove that you are guilty.
Also I wonder if not giving his password counts as the 5th amendment since you could argue that he could be incriminating himself by giving the password.
I would think that he can plead the 5th for that, but I am not entirely sure.

Technically you don't prove or disprove anything, it is their burden to prove you guilty, or at least that is how it's supposed to work.
If the police can't do that themselves then i guess in the UK they can just bully you into incriminating yourself.
UK LOGIC. THE BEST.
You don't prove you are innocent, you disprove that you are guilty.
Fuck that. Innocent until proven guilty.

He's technically already incriminating himself by not giving it. Every time he refuses to give it, he's incriminating himself further.
Well, that and people like to excuse the dumbest shit by going 'GURD GURVEN RIGHT' at everything.
Fuck that. Innocent until proven guilty.

That was what I meant, you don't have to prove that you are innocent because you start out innocent. You have to disprove the people who are trying to prove you are guilty.
I probably just worded my statement bad.

You're right, we should all submit to authority.
Next time a policeman wants to come into my house, i have nothing to hide, so why not.
Next time a nice FBI man wants to read all my emails, i should let him, I'm not a criminal after all.
Next time somebody wants to put cameras up everywhere, why not, it's for our own good.
Next time somebody wants my password, well why not have it, only criminals have anything to hide.
There is no words to describe how sorry i feel for people in the UK, or how sick they make me, sometimes.

You don't have to prove anything until they bring forward evidence of the charges they're putting against you.
Now you're just confusing me.
I was rather confused by what he said as well. If you have nothing to worry about, why would you give a damn? His examples are contradicting his own sarcastic remark.

I've never seen, heard or god forbid held a gun before
There are so many cameras that the CCTV guys could probably watch my life in 3D

Still, where I live is lovely and worth every case of privacy intrusion
Double edged sword I suppose
Ignore him, he's a bit loopy.
Let me explain something to you, kind sir.
By that same logic, and by that i mean the "Only criminals need be afraid" logic, you are subjecting yourself to Totalitarianism in no time. You should be afraid, you should resist, because the government isn't always looking out for your best interest, your secrets aren't always secure and people have a mother fucking right to privacy.
I bet you would let airport security stick a camera up your asshole to look for bombs, nothing to hide there right?
