Oh the price was one of the main reasons I was going to buy it and now I am disappointed. This news killed my afternoon.

You can get a 14 inch i5+8gb ram laptop for £439 (without windows, however I assume MS don't have to pay themselves a license fee.) On top of that, +£60-100 for the digitizer and high res screen, £500 ish would have been acceptable for the i5 one, given that I bet MS could get hardware really cheap if they wanted to.
My Asus Transformers keyboard was $130 BUT it has a built in battery the effectivly doubles the tablets battery life,1x usb port, 1x sdcard slot
Not to mention that the standalone Asus Transformer is cheaper than the surface and it has the same Tegra 3 CPU and GPS. And the infinity which would be at the same price, would have a 1080p screen.
the funniest thing about ultrabooks is that the macbook air is still the cheapest despite companies like Acers putting out their usual turdbooks which still cost more than a mac
There are plenty of ultrabooks and semi-ultrabooks that are better and cheaper than the air eg vaio s13a - same weight as air, magnesium+carbon fibre build, as powerful as macbook pro despite running cooler or the gigabyte u2442 series (may not be cheaper in US pricing) or the zenbooks (again may not be cheaper in US pricing) Any of which are far faster than the air, not to mention user upgradable and not tied to mac osx (let's face it, windows is crippled on macbooks)

Anyhow, you have to think of screen quality and overall quality, not just pure specs. Sure you can get a Packard Bell crapbook for very little money, but it's never gonna be as good as an ASUS one. On top of that you'll have to place touch screen and the fact that it takes some money to get all that stuff crammed into a very little package. a laptop and a tablet is two very different animals.

They'd easily make a substantial profit on a £500 surface, though I'd like to feel the build quality first before I even consider buying one. Also $100 for a keyboard cover is mental.
Relevant da fuck media tags are not working
They are. You just gotta take out the s from https.
I was hoping they'd make them that size, then I would buy one no question; and I typically am a Mac fan. Any idea if they're going to make the large, table sized ones?

You have to remember that it's actually quite an engeneering feat as well. If it's too expensive, buy a bluetooth keyboard that connects via USB - it's supported anyway.
bluetooth keyboard that connects via USB
wat
They renamed them to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/pixelsense/default.aspx
ahh, that'd be why I stopped hearing about them. that 8,000$ price tag is going to take a bit of saving. Good thing I can write it off as a business expense :V
Once the Pro version comes out I might be tempted to sell my IPad and get it, however it depends on the price mainly, the RT version seems to be the same sort of restrictions as the Ipad

The £439 laptop was specced from PCSpecialist, and is a Clevo, and I have used a few modern Clevo's and in my opinion build quality is top notch. However I can't comment on the display quaility of the panel in this laptop: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/ultraNote/ I do take your point about laptops and tablets being different, however the laptop from PCS has the components bought buy PCSpecialist, which is a smaller company, and I would guess Microsoft would be able to secure the parts at a lower price than an small, Independant UK business.
who the hell still cares about APPS om my gode APPLICATION for my PORTABLE COMPUTE DEVICE makes me so DAMP OMG if i cannot download my free iButtscratcher app which is a badly compressed image of pete griffie from the family gyu who say buttscratcher!!! when u tap his face ill never buy your BAD touch DEIVCE wtf im a consumer I have rights! Wanna know how many 3rd party apps are useful enough that I use them daily? 2. and they are on all systems.
Call me weird then but if I wanted that functionality I wouldn't buy a $600 deal and get something that can do that for half the price.
Call me weird then but if I wanted that functionality I wouldn't buy a $600 deal and get something that can do that for half the price.
My Xoom cost me $330 and it also has 32GB of storage.
wat
Yeah, that sounds stupid. You know what I meant. I think. There's just no point in comparing a tablet and a laptop.
The keyboard looks like something I'd buy for maybe $50, not 119 or 129, and with two options I can see the price add but maybe $5 more not 10?
I thought I was getting a portable computer around Christmas, I guess not.
Welp it seems the first batch of surfaces sold out as shipping is now set to three weeks after the 26th.

As neat as the idea of having a full windows OS is I'd really like to be able to run desktop apps. I can't find anything about the x86 version in the store

A laptop also comes with a keyboard, whereas the physical keyboard for surface is an extra £110. That's more than the difference from an Dual Core i5 to a Quad i7. It just seems to me that MS is marketing it as a luxury product, and while I don't have a problem with luxury products, I don't know if MS has the reputation of Apple to sell a premium product.

It is a, if not luxury, then at least not strictly needed product, and that is why I don't think you should compare it to a laptop. It's ARM dammit, it doesn't even run the same programs.
