Funny, because I'm the only one here who hasn't engaged in any personal attacks, but have attacked the argument directly without ever once focusing on its author.
Wow, you actually believe that, don't you?
Are you sure
I can point to a post not even 5 posts back that states I probably have issues.
No, you posted a picture of an orange man in disgust, and I used the impersonal "you" (meaning anyone reading) to indicate that feeling envy of the man is problematic.
You had already expressed your disgust. You met no criteria. I was insulting the giant oompa loompa, not you.

Remember when you complained about how I was ignoring your points.
Again. Not even close to the same way. Not submissive. NEVER submissive. Always in control. Always affluent.
And the being hospitalized thing is the primary concern.
Body dysmorphism. That is what the portrayal of women is causing. That simply is not happening in men. There is a reason for that. It's because men made both ideals.
If you are going to descend into calling me a meanie-head, I am simply going to assume you are finished discussing the topic.
Maybe declare victory from a mountaintop.

The fact that he's orange isn't the problem, it's the fact that there are a large amount of people who think that that kind of muscle definition is the ideal muscle definition, just as there are women out there who become unhealthily thin.
we don't even believe the same things
and you're chastising me right now
i'd compare you to someone but i don't insult people whom i know nothing about (pro-tip to you)
I realized the irony, but I try not to/don't chastise people and sling insults on such a regular basis that it becomes an identifying characteristic. If you don't believe in the same things I honestly never noticed any difference, but you guys basically have the same personality, from what I can gather from browsing Sensational Headlines on a regular basis for a good few years on and off as you post here really often.
Now, I'm sorry I brought it up as it is utterly derailing, so I'll head off to bed and leave it at that.

And do you have statistics on that to cite?
I've never met ANYONE who has EVER thought that was the ideal male physique. I don't. You don't. Nobody in this thread does.
Who is this person that wants to be like that?

Do you even read other people's arguments or do you create your own little straw-men to destroy with you god like powers of logic and reasoning to assert that YOU are the smart and intelligent one and that they are just idiots you can tower over.
[editline]
No seriously, it is the classic "holier than thou" approach you are going with. Come back down to earth, you aren't some super intelligent being with perfect morals. You're a regular person just like us. Get over yourself. Yes, this is a personal attack. You know why? Because you do the same thing in every post with your underlying "i'm better than you" theme.
And do you have statistics on that to cite?
There are plenty of people who think having well-defined abs is an indicator of being fit and healthy, but it's more of an aesthetic.

Whom?
Have you met these people in any great frequency?
I sure as hell haven't.

Please highlight the straw men.
This far I have addressed points directly, even when they veer off-course from the core topic.

Last page you veered entirely off the argument's path when you plucked out parts of Ultra Violence's argument that didn't even exist and continued to do so even after he repeatedly asserted that that wasn't what he was arguing.
They're all over high school.
How many of them are actively working toward that goal to such an extent that they have been hospitalized?

Do send them in a private message. Unfortunately, shifting the topic of this thread to "goddamn motherfucking lankist power hour" is not going to help that particular situation.
How many of them are actively working toward that goal to such an extent that they have been hospitalized?
How many women have been hospitalized for being too thin? Because for one, the goal for women is easier. But there's no shortage of weight room incidents.

Just from a few days ago. At her worst, she was expected to live no longer than 48 hours.
This happens all of the time with young girls. Anorexia and bulimia are extremely prevalent disorders at the moment, and they are exacerbated/caused by media portrayals of women.
Can you find any cases of young men facing similar health issues due to media influence?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/15/health/15stat.html
Perhaps not similar but I doubt there are really 970,000 women out there who are anorexic, bulimic or some such to the point of hospitalization.
[editline]7th May 2012[/editline]
Also, eating disorders are prevalent in athletes as well.
Athletes:
• Risk Factors: In judged sports – sports that score participants – prevalence of eating disorders is 13% (compared with 3% in refereed sports).19
• Significantly higher rates of eating disorders found in elite athletes (20%), than in a female control group (9%).20
• Female athletes in aesthetic sports (e.g. gynmastics, ballet, figure skating) found to be at the highest risk for eating disorders.20
• A comparison of the psychological profiles of athletes and those with anorexia found these factors in common: perfectionism, high self-expectations, competitiveness, hyperactivity, repetitive exercise routines, compulsiveness, drive, tendency toward depression, body image distortion, pre-occupation with dieting and weight.21
http://www.anad.org/get-information/about-eating-disorders/eating-disorders-statistics/
Sure, women get it worse, and you're right that media portrayal is to blame, but you can't simply say women are the only ones with dietary problems or otherwise problems with their self-image.
Perhaps not similar but I doubt there are really 970,000 women out there who are anorexic, bulimic or some such to the point of hospitalization.
Your doubts are unfounded.
http://www.state.sc.us/dmh/anorexia/statistics.htm
Estimated seven million women in the US with eating disorders, eighty percent of which never receive treatment. 95% of which are between the ages of 12 and 25
Men are both far less affected by media portrayals and their effects have not been directly tied to the media. Athletes get eating disorders because it's their job. Young girls get eating disorders because they actually believe they're ugly.
How many of those cases are serious to the point of hospitalization?
How many of those cases are serious to the point of hospitalization?
Unknown, because 80% never receive treatment.
You cited statistics for athletes, not the population at large.
These are seven million girls whose disorders cannot be wholly attributed to career ambitions, but merely self-image and social pressures.
[editline]7th May 2012[/editline]
http://www.nowfoundation.org/issues/health/whp/whp_fact2.html
Scratch that. The death-rate across the board for eating disorders is ~20%
That does not include hospitalization, ONLY fatalities.
That's 1,400,000 deaths ALONE, not including survivors.
Are you seeing the difference here?
A few guys with torn ligaments does not equate to ~1,400,000 fatalities.
A few guys with torn ligaments does not equate to ~1,400,000 fatalities.
I never said the problems were equal, I just said that there is a significant amount of guys who are injured in pursuit of a "perfect" body image as well.
I never said the problems were equal, I just said that there is a significant amount of guys who are injured in pursuit of a "perfect" body image as well.
No, you cited statistics on athletes, not the public at large.
Athletes get injured because athletics are their career, not their self-image.
Meanwhile roughly 1,400,000 girls die because they think they aren't pretty.
hey look who didn't read the thread
from Ultraviolence w/ love.

This is the image we have been discussing.
Wholly attainable with diet and exercise, not at all dangerous to reach save for rare medical conditions preventing it.
But hey, if that orange dude is your ideal, you've got other issues aside from this thread.
This is male ideal?

Well to be fair they probably weren't pretty.
This is male ideal?
According to Ultra Violence.
If it wasn't a glamor shot that guy would just look kinda chubby or skinny.
Coming from someone with a mostly similar amount of muscle and fat
2 and 3 over 1 any day.
My favorite physique would be a median between 2 and 3.
Personally, I like all of them.
none of them like you
It's not, he's right. Size 10 is plus size when it comes to modelling.
For example, America's Next Top Model has one plus-size winner. Whitney Thompson. This her:

She's a size 10. That's the size I wear. And she is considered plus size.
What the hell? I'm bordering plus size it seems then. Fuck you fashion.
6 pages in and no maxofs2d?
none of them like you
Wow, what a nice comeback man! Really burned him good dude, nice one! It helps the discussion too!

And don't forget extreme political correctness.
And don't forget extreme political correctness.
No, political incorrectness is great and I encourage it, but if you argue on the web like a lowbrow then chances are you're just going to isolate yourself into a hole of ignorance, entrenching yourself and others in their positions even more. Civility is a key aspect of the ability to gain knowledge in my opinion, as it puts everyone on the same level.
