most people don't because it's a bannable offense
Never knew that, I just never did it because it isn't a big deal. If I ignore someone it's because I don't want to see their posts, not because I want to say that I ignored the person.

I think it falls under the "useless posts" category which usually result in bans.

Never knew that. Snipped. Anyway, can we stop fighting? It's not solving anything. Nobody here is going to change their opinions.

Eh, I'm not a fan of his belittling nature, but sure, I'd take it over the alternative.

Passive aggressiveness is arguing?

Belittling causes more trouble and defeats the point of arguing. It even disgusts people who agree with the subject.
How men achieve an "ideal" body type
Workout and eat healthier
How women achieve an "ideal" body type
Throw up and starve themselves
Yep men have the same media image

how come no-one ever comes to my aid, all they ever do is send me death threats!
Guys, this is not "talk about lankist so much that he might get an erection: the megathread"

No?
Because when you were all pissed of at me you actually read what I was saying and eventually distanced yourself from the people I was belittling.
Sounds like some of that message got through.
And the only things I belittle are the words people say, not the people that say them. If you cannot distinguish between the things you say and the person you are, that's your problem. Perhaps you should learn how easy it is to redact things that you say, or up and apologize.
When I get one-upped, I defer to the person who is clearly correct. That rarely happens, not because I'm never wrong but because I tend to keep my mouth shut when I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. That's why I mostly discuss shit in threads like these and not, say, start an argument in a speed-of-light-broken thread when I am clearly a dumbfuck on the subject. But when I'm talking about medical shit, I defer to Spain. When I talk about weird sciencey quantum shit, I defer to Avon or Johnnymo. They've called me on the carpet plenty of times and when they're right, they're right.
how come no-one ever comes to my aid, all they ever do is send me death threats!
I've defended you before
truth be told I just want more friendliness here, I think progressism in the US died because Americans felt allot of them were assholes or overly harsh, this can be seen in how mainstream Americans have adopted lots of ideas or phrases from oppressive conservatives (look at how Rush Limbaugh's feminazi became popular among people from all walks of life)
I feel progressives should try to avoid these hurtful stereotypes, and some of the "arguing" here from the white knights is Rush Limbaugh's wet dream.
But when I'm talking about medical shit, I defer to Spain.
Spain does have good healthcare.
If I sound incoherent (I probably am, I am tired) then let me say this: I am pretty liberal/progressive/whatever, I think Obama is too moderate, however, I understand that in order to keep a movement alive, you need to appeal to people.
This article/blog post demonstrates what I mean:
http://wwwwakeupamericans-spree.blogspot.com/2011/07/penza-on-why-progressives-fail-to-get.html
(I just randomly googled this, I don't know or care for the author's ideology but their point stands tall)
I'm not starting a movement I'm just talking to people on the internet. Sharing perspectives. No opinion formed in a vacuum is sound.
I'm not starting a movement I'm just talking to people on the internet. Sharing perspectives. No opinion formed in a vacuum is sound.
ok but I can't help but feel turned off by your arguments, you are making someone who has taken multiple sociology courses and femnist related things want to, well, not be feminists.
Like sort of how you can appeal to people, you can also unappeal, and boy is that an understatement. I still firmly believe these things are what caused progressivism and things like "liberalism" and "feminism" to get such a bad rep in the last few decades.
if people need logical thought to be sugar coated then thinking logically probably isn't for them.
if people need logical thought to be sugar coated then thinking logically probably isn't for them.
People who respond to being insulted are probably dumb anyways.
[editline]8th May 2012[/editline]
Or they are just masochists.
ok but I can't help but feel turned off by your arguments
That's your prerogative. I've no designs on pretending shitty opinions are valid simply because they have been stated in the form of an opinion. If you feel my attacking your opinion is equivalent to my attacking you as a person, then you need to reconsider how you form opinions.
I've got no expressed goal for being here. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I like discussing shit I otherwise do not have the opportunity to discuss with frank honesty. What you think when it's all over is none of my concern.
I would rather see annorexics than fat people, no need to change anything

No I'm sick of "healthy" meaning 170 pound whale
'loving your body' isn't eating whatever you want, to love your body you eat healthy and exercise

uh okay
that's what everybody has been saying anyway
I don't see what's wrong with discussing what you find physically attractive in women in a thread about female models and body image, I mean it's completely relevant. Yes, some of us are avoiding touching on the deeper issues involved and being slightly facetious, but that doesn't mean we don't care or even acknowlege that there are problems. It's like we're being slated by some people here for simply expressing our attraction to the opposite sex.
The majority of people on facepunch are horny teenage boys, I mean do you expect them to turn into sensible and considerate female rights activists as soon as a subject like this is brought up?
Maybe i've been sounding a bit incoherent lately but revising physics all day everyday without a break does not put you in the best state of mind

Tbh I see just as many ridiculously skinny male models, and in fact the number of young gay men suffering from anorexia and other weight or body image problems is similar to that of young women. You can't stereotype all men as wanting to aim for the buff macho ideal or all male models reflecting that ideal. Maybe in the past that was the case, but things are much more varied now regarding sexuality and self image. And anyway, obsessively trying to build muscle can be as dangerous to someone's health as trying to get ridiculously skinny. All i'm saying here is body image pressure is not exclusive to women

Uh... no. I said that anorexia and body image issues experienced by young women are also prevalant among homosexual (and straight) men
Gay and bisexual men may be at far higher risk for eating disorders than heterosexual men, according to a study conducted at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. In the first population-based study of its kind, the researchers found that gay and bisexual men have higher rates of eating disorders. The findings are reported in the April 2007 issue of International Journal of Eating Disorders.
"It is not clear why gay men have high rates of eating disorders," says Dr. Meyer. "One theory is that the values and norms in the gay men's community promote a body-centered focus and high expectations about physical appearance, so that, similar to what has been theorized about heterosexual women, they may feel pressure to maintain an ideal body image."

Q. Men and Eating Disorders
In recent years, an increasing number of men have been diagnosed with eating disorders, and not just compulsive overeating, but also disorders like anorexia and bulimia that have traditionally been associated with women. (Full disclosure: I am one such man.)
Does this represent men wanting to take on feminine roles, or feeling that they cannot relate at all to traditional, ultra-macho conceptions of masculinity, and want to take on a more “feminine” persona? Does it differ for homosexual and heterosexual men? To what do you attribute the recent rise in these disorders among men?
A. Dr. Zerbe responds:
Two large studies have reported that some 10 to 11 percent of patients with an eating disorder are men, though more recent studies report that as many as 30 percent of patients with anorexia or bulimia are male, and as many as 40 percent of binge eaters are men.
Fortunately our society is moving away, albeit slowly, from stereotyping men and women. Hence, like you, more men are admitting to having anorexia, bulimia, binge eating problems and even just a preoccupation with being a particular weight.
Clinicians are learning more about the millions of men who suffer from body image conflicts, compulsive exercise, weight obsession and other accompanying psychiatric problems like obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression that can accompany a bona fide eating disorder. Men also tend to use steroids more than women to develop a desired masculine build, a condition sometimes called “reverse anorexia.”
Predominant; powerful.
30-40% is pretty prevalent though. It's not a completely even split, but it might help to highlight the idea that unhealthy body image is not only a woman's issue, but a cultural issue affecting both men and women. Also, although the body image that is sold to men is not inherently unhealthy like with women, the means to achieve that body can often become unhealthy. People get into fad diets, binging, starving, drugs, and unhealthy workout habits that are overall damaging to the body. Even if the issue is predominately affecting women, that doesn't mean that the other side needs to be completely ignored. And a New York Times blog is not a very credible scientific source if you'd like to go into specifics.

Prevalent? Not negligible? It's indicative that there is a problem with men's body image in the media as well, even if it isn't as big of an issue as women's body image. Also, fuck you Lankist. Why the fuck can you do it but not me?!
