I'm pretty sure it's illegal to use guns as a form of self defence in the UK
Not if the other person has some form of weapon that can kill at range as well
Not all guns are banned in the UK. Rifles and shotguns are still perfectly obtainable, you just need a license.
Obtainable yes, but I'm not sure you're allowed to use them against other people as owning a shotgun for purposes of self defence is banned.
If somebody is on your property with criminal intent/already has committed a crime, then you should have every right to remove said individual from your property by any means necessary. (I.e stabbing, shooting or running over in a tractor)
Both in house, yeah Coming at you in the yard, yeah You in house, him in yard fleeing, no

Yes, but not something as retarded as burglary. It wasn't the ownership of the gun that caused him to go to prison, it's that he shot two fleeing burglars in the back.
I think I actually think I disagree with this. The law permits individuals to defend themselves if necessary with a reasonable level of force. I don't see how this is reasonable.

How about if you stabbed them.. with bullets? :v:
Good. Burglars know the consequences yet they steal shit anyway, so if they get stabbed or whatever that's their fault.
Farmers are allowed shotguns for the purpose of protecting land from pests, I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty damn sure that doesn't include intruders
He shot them while they were fleeing, if they had guns as well he wouldn't have been charged.
Good. Burglars know the consequences yet they steal shit anyway, so if they get stabbed or whatever that's their fault.
This isn't going to let you just go around stabbing unarmed robbers.

This part especially bugs me: "Asked about what this would mean in practice, he said: "If an old lady finds she's got an 18 year old burgling her house and she picks up a kitchen knife and sticks it in him she has not committed a criminal offence and we will make that clear." I'm not saying you can't defend yourself, but just batting an eyelid to these things is concerning. But, I'll wait to see the proper proposals. [editline]29th June 2011[/editline]
This isn't going to let you just go around stabbing unarmed robbers.
According to this report, it is. If it will turn out like that, however, is doubtful.
Both in house, yeah Coming at you in the yard, yeah You in house, him in yard fleeing, no
First two yeah. If the guys fleeing (Without your stuff that is) then don't kill him. Make sure the fellow gets captured by the authorities.
Agreed. This part especially bugs me: "Asked about what this would mean in practice, he said: "If an old lady finds she's got an 18 year old burgling her house and she picks up a kitchen knife and sticks it in him she has not committed a criminal offence and we will make that clear."
I to an extent agree with that part, as an old woman would have no way of restraining a younger person and thus even an unarmed robber would pose a threat to her. However if you're a built up 30 year old, I believe the legal situation would be quite different.
Then I can capture a burglar and make him my sadistic slave?
You mean I've been stabbing burglars illegally??
First two yeah. If the guys fleeing (Without your stuff that is) then don't kill him. Make sure the fellow gets captured by the authorities.
be sure to capture the thief and detain him for enhanced interrogation
Yeah if your life is threatened then go ahead and stab the fucker. The problem is whether or not the law sees what happened as your life being threatened.
He shot them while they were fleeing, if they had guns as well he wouldn't have been charged.
He would have because if they were fleeing there would have been no threat making his actions unnecessary.
*Asian kid walks on EDL man's lawn whilst doing paper round*
YOU'RE ON MY PROPERTY YER FUKKIN MUSSI
*shank* And that's how this will be abused, but as long as there's a bit of leeway as to when it's appropriate or not, it should be fine.
Yeah I'm sure that's really going to happen.
So like if my friend steals my iPod I can just stab him right?
Yeah!
The problem with "reasonable force" is that it is a horribly vague term and can be twisted to mean whatever the prosecution wants, should the burglar decide to press charges. Besides in the heat of the moment you aren't going to be thinking "Now, what is the most proportionate and reasoned form of defence against this vagrant", you're going to be thinking "oh fuck there's someone in my house I can barely see what if he has a gun oh fuck oh fuck"
hey guys did you see the movie The Tortured. in which the psychopathic wife forces the husband to find the person who killed their baby, then they capture the wrong guy and torture him for several days without knowing it. you're not making your side look "better" than the other.
I am really happy about this. If some scumbag wants to break into my house, he knows EXACTLY what he is doing.
Finally we have some right to give those thieves a lesson of their own. :smug:
Why can't Ireland have this law? We have to match the threat with equal force. So our goverment, while were in danger cuz sum1's in our house, to think up a weapon that is equal in force that the burglar will cause to you.
What about shooting
this seems completely arbitrary [editline]1[/editline] I take that back, I read "stabbing burglars will be illegal." I need to learn to read before I post

How. I would be grabbing heavy objects and aim for the head, if I went through it.
What about shooting
You have a better chance of killing, at least I believe so.
Sorry, i had to.
no you didnt.
