Anonymous hacks Romney tax records, is now holding them for ransom
Actually demanding money from Romney, although highly illegal might have an interesting effect.
If Romney pays up, how fucking shady would that look? Not only will he not release his taxes, he'll pay people off to not release them.
If it's true that "anonymous" stole his tax returns then I think they realized they weren't all that interesting, so just releasing the returns wouldn't be as exciting as a story of Romney paying $1 million to keep his tax returns secret.
At the same time, he still holds the right whether to release them or not publicly. Same way Obama made a publicity stunt by holding them and then releasing them years later to boost his credibility. Those are his documents, not the nations. You aren't required to walk around and show whomever asks your tax documents.
they've got a big red panic button that will leak the files to every website on the internet if the FBI break in their door.
Well it's gonna get released anyway because I doubt they'll get paid so I don't think the FBI really cares.
And no one will be caught, No one ever is.
Say that to Bradley Manning or the various LulzSec members being arrested.
Best case - Bad rep for Romney + Money

A perfect crime
That isn't how attacks on politicians work.
A direct attack- fraud, blackmail, actual violence, etc.- always helps the PR of a politician. They cue sympathy with the politician's original base and require careful discussion of related topics by enemies. In this case, that means Romney will bring this up if he feels he's being "harassed" over his taxes because, hey, he actually is. Meanwhile, the dems will have to strongly dismiss caring this much while still expressing that they care, confusing the message.
I'd argue it was made up by the GOP specifically for defensive purposes. There is absolutely no way anyone politically opposed to Romney can benefit from this, and he only stands to gain from it.

not true, he's already been getting slammed for only paying 13% income tax and hiding his money in tax havens like the cayman islands. there's a very good reason he isn't releasing any more tax returns and anyone with nothing to hide would've already released them to shut up the other side
Awesome. Real cybercrime has begun!
I hope Romney doesn't pay, and that it was a hoax. Hell, if he stands firm and just doesn't give a shit, my respect for him will go up a bundle and three-quarters.

Only in modern politics can an amount of bitching by one party to no net quantifiable effect be considered "slamming".
The masses don't give a shit about his tax returns.
there's a very good reason he isn't releasing any more tax returns
Unless you have seen them firsthand, you can't say that.
and anyone with nothing to hide would've already released them to shut up the other side
Because that worked so well for Obama and the birth certificate, right?

Glad to see the OP can't even read the first sentence of the article he posted himself.
This isn't by "Anonymous", its just by an anonymous group/person.

The page is down for me?
The money is going to be pretty useless anyway. If Romney attempt to buy over $1 million in BitCoins, the entire market will crash. If they somehow do manage to do it, and Anonymous attempts to sell the BitCoins, the market will crash. And obvciously given how sporadic and uncontrollable BitCoin inflation is, that $1 million in BTC could be worth only $500,000 or less.
Its happened before, when hackers got into a bitcoin exchange site and tried to offload millions of dollars in BitCoins. Fucked the entire exchange system up.
It'd be pretty hilarious if they didn't have them, Romney paid, and they ended up ruining the guy's rep AND a million dollars in untraceable money richer

It could be a two fold thing, say that you did it and discredit him and crash bitcoin.
I can just picture Mitt Romney saying, "Well I did have some spare change in my wallet, you can have it, I don't care."

Loaded for me now.
It confirms they sent the actual flash drives and letters. Doesn't mean the encrypted file isn't trollface.png.

I don't know what kinda world you live in that half a million is useless
hell even if they got a tenth of it it's still quite a bit of cash
Said anonymous is my new favorite political anti-hero.
Just like to clear up here, It is an anonymous group, not Anonymous.
Same thing if you ask me
$1,000,000 in bitcoins
think of all the illegal guns, grenades and slaves you could buy
Romney is sort of at a stuck situation. If he pays them the million then it is hilariously obvious that he is hiding something.
But if he doesn't pay it gets released, and if he is hiding something then everyone will know.
So if he is hiding something, its caught up to him.

It would amount to one whole Springfield 1911
As PwC said in its statement:

Seems to be getting more serious
They know they aren't getting any money,so why not just release them?
they could see the money donated to something,
It would amount to one whole Springfield 1911
worth every penny
Either way the outcome is going to be interesting if or if not he pays.
I don't think Anonymous would hold anything for ransom, don't they generally believe in hacking and immediately releasing?
I think if the usual members of Anonymous were behind this, the documents would have been on Wikileaks as soon as possible. This sounds like bullshit to me.
I would love to see them released against his will, I wanna know what he's so obsessed with keeping hidden.

From my understanding Anonymous isn't an actual organized group, just a name /b/tards and hackers hide themselves under.
This is fucking awesome. I hope it shows what Romney's trying to obviously hide. This will help him lose in the November election if real.
