Police justify extreme raid of DotCom's mansion by saying they thought he had an internet "Doomsday

This thread needs pictures of hooded people typing on laptops.
They make it sound like he's Skeletor or something.
Too be fair, he does kind of seem like a bond villain.
So they found oil in his house?
They aren't though, it's only against 'pirates' that this occurs.
It's only against pirates that police bring a helicopter against a 20,000 square foot mansion, is what you're saying? Really? Please I'm curious to hear all about this pirate persecution and how the police never use helicopters.
All they needed to do was serve a warrant, yet they had 4 teams of armed police bust down the door, kick the shit out of him and then arrest him.
Totally not OTT at all.
Like I said before: it's standard procedure, they treated him like they would anyone else.
Too be fair, he does kind of seem like a bond villain.
What kind of bond villain sits on his ass all day eating cheetos and playing Call of Duty?
It's not like he did this:

There's this kind of stupid busts, and then there's more serious stuff they should be dealing with
Honestly, I wouldn't doubt that they actually thought he had such a device. Why else would they use such force to capture him?

To send a message. The man was involved in illegal activities, but he wasn't violent.
Like I said before: it's standard procedure, they treated him like they would anyone else.
Is it standard procedure because they were following up on a tip that he had something that was theoretically impossible?
To send a message. The man was involved in illegal activities, but he wasn't violent.
What message? The raid was obviously going to be received badly if its details broke out, as it has.
Reading it, it sounds like the FBI actually manipulated the police into doing what they wanted - it's still pretty fucking stupid of them to believe a device like that was even possible and moreover actually acting on the information in a very over the top manner.

they didn't treat him like they would anyone else. i can think of only 1 other raid that was this extreme and that was against supposed terrorist training camps in the ureweras. we have huge gang problems here in nz, and yet this is what our police are wasting their time on.

our government at the moment (national) are pretty much USA's bitches so it's no surprise that the fbi tells our cops to do something and they do it. pretty hilarious that they make such a fuck up of it though
So now we're considering piracy grounds for Doomsday theories? Nice.
Why is this so hard to believe?
The alleged doomsday device -- so-called by Paul Davidson, Dotcom's lawyer -- was purportedly able to destroy evidence on any of Dotcom's computers worldwide within seconds and could be triggered from a number of places throughout Dotcom's property.
We've been to the moon, yet, remotely wiping the memory on computers from a separate device is "theoretically impossible"? The word doomsday device wasn't even officially used by police, it was coined by the guy's lawyer. Of course he's going to try to make the police look stupid.
What kind of bond villain sits on his ass all day eating cheetos and playing Call of Duty?
Okay, maybe an Austin Powers villain.
Sensationalist headline indeed, there was nothing "extreme" about the raid.
You obviously have not fucking watched the raid.

He wasn't even doing anything illegal. Watch the interview with him. The whole thing is utter bullshit.

So the article in the OP literally doesn't have the proper information to make sense of the situation. Brilliant.
I mean come on guys I don't really agree with the arrest either but when you start lying about what actually went down you get to fox-news level fucked up.
Personally I think it's great the police have stopped treating "white-collar" crime with such laxness.
HAHAHAHA, wow you're hilarious. Hilariously ignorant.

MR BOND
We must invade Dotcom's house, he has WMDs!
Correct term is IPMD.Internet programs of mass deletion.
They aren't though, it's only against 'pirates' that this occurs.
yeah man they sent one squadcar to take out my crack mansion last week. sucks that the police are diverting all of their resources to take out internet pirates, right?
They're basically playing off the ignorance of the general public. Though this...I don't know anyone foolish enough to believe that an "internet doomsday device" is an actual thing.
You'd be surprised at how stupid people can be.
Doomsday device..hmm
Was he gonna type google into google.
from it crowd.

Hey guys this was clearly just an innocent mistake - they genuinely thought that [del]Saddam Hussein[/del] Kim Dotcom had [del]weapons of mass destruction[/del] an internet doomsday device so decided to [del]invade Iraq[/del] arrest him just in case.
So... Is anybody paying attention to the fact that they actually didn't think he had a doomsday device?
What they thought he had was a system which would allow him to wipe all of his computers and servers of evidence.
Dotcom's lawyer called it a doomsday device in court, and apparently the article in the OP ran with it as if they were talking about something that could effect the internet as a whole.
Other issues with the arrest notwithstanding of course.
Only everyone in this thread.
Well, if there was a man with such a device, I'd almost expect them to have Dotcom as a surname.
