Blame piracy :v:
It looked like "Planet Hulk" but with all the interesting bits chopped out.
That is exactly what I thought from the trailers. The actual film wasn't much like it though. I only saw it because my Dad decided to see it at the IMax.
The three big movies he greenlit at Disney were John Carter, The Lone Ranger(w/ Johnny Depp), and Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful(whatever the fuck that is). This guy does NOT know jack shit about making hit movies. John Carter? The Lone Ranger? Oz? What frickin' century is he living in?

Each of those movies is over $200 million dollars in budget though. He'd need to do a lot more than 'find' some money with those.
I think Rick Ross was too hard on himself. It's almost like he's saying "This movie didn't make any money, I suck" when The Avengers and The Dark Night Rises are going to make a shit ton of money. He should just learn from his mistakes.
John Carter wasn't a bad movie, it's just that the story was way outdated and it had basically no target audience.
It doesn't help that the advertisements pretty much made that as clear to everyone as possible .
I hate how in this day and age people talk less about how a film was actually good or not and more about " OMG IT NO MAKE MONEY!!!" seriously i go to see a film about John Carter because i'm interested in John Carter, not how much money it will make, Disney is a very big company, it will make its money back one way or another, big deal.
You're 25, "in this day and age" compared to what? Hate to break it to you, movies have been about money since Charlie Chaplin was eating shoes. People talk about money because, whether the movie is good or not, it dictates if we will see another. Twilight was shit, it made a lot of money.
Brilliant. "Gladiators and aliens" Now there's a title that would've sold well.

It was originally set to be released on June 8th, but Disney moved it to March for reasons I don't remember.
Since its got the guy who does pixar movies directcing it Disney wanted to fuck him over so they could shift the blame to him and get him out of the company since pixar movies make Disney shit look bad.
Well disney you could have gotten back to do what your name spells, good cartoons.

Granted, it broke even eventually due to a pretty damn nice worldwide gross but not including marketing costs, it made a 20 million profit, 8% of the original budget. That's like being pushed to the edge of a cliff only to stop yourself from falling off at the last moment. Disney is a company, companies exist by making lots of money. Having an 8% return of investments does not equal 'lots of money'.
Boxoffice Mojo has John Carter at $269 million worldwide. Considering that the studio shares box office with theaters that show the movie, this means the studio got back maybe 2/3rds of that(and that's being generous), say $180 million. So now Disney is looking at dvd/blu ray, video on demand, etc to make up the rest...for a movie audiences in the US have already rejected.
It didn't produce enough money. Regardless of how good the film was, in the end, money is all that matters.
unlike most studios that even if you make them just a little profit they will keep you going I don't think Disney likes having they're name tied to less then reputable movies
I haven't seen a movie in a very long time at the theaters. I've yet to hear of a film worth $12 and gum on my soles.
The Artist? The Borrowers?

Never heard of this movie, so I suppose that explains something, considering I just went and saw a movie last night. No previews, no posters, no advertisements, etc.
The Artist? The Borrowers?
Never heard of them. Thinking of seeing the final Batman movie this summer, though. Maybe.
Brilliant. "Gladiators and aliens" Now there's a title that would've sold well.
Alien vs Gladiators
When I first heard about John Carter, I was all like "what the hell is a John Carter?". Goes to show how bad it was advertised.
