In fact my aunt (not blood) is a muslim living in Brunei and I'm pretty sure she only really covers her hair for work, is allowed to drive and such, and generally seems a very happy woman, though apparently she isn't enjoying her work at the national bank as much as she had hoped she would. From what I've seen (I accept I'm probably not getting the entire picture), she does not seem to be treated 'like complete garbage' at all. Basically, Islam is not in itself an evil entity, but it has been implemented in less than noble ways, as you suggest.
