so what's this show even about?
I've asked literally every person I know irl that watches this and the only answer I've gotten is "an immortal doctor who time travels"
Well that's pretty much it. You should watch it, it's good.
Well that's pretty much it. You should watch it, it's good.

wait so what does he do while time travelling?

Yeah pretty much. Goes to some place he feels like, sticks around for a while, usually something bad is happening and he fixes it.
wait so what does he do while time travelling?

he saves people from various monsters/aliens
usually what happens is he goes somewhere to be a tourist/relax, and he gets caught up in stuff happening.
Basically the writers of the show are given the option to basically do anything since you got the whole of time and space to play with
Alien ark spaceship with dinosaurs in it on collision course - why not
Visit London and have a chat with Shakespeare - don't see why not
Visit the end of the universe - splendid
Go through the general mindfuckery that is so fun with time travel - yes please
Anyway, Capaldi was really good in the Children of Earth, so it'll be interesting to see him as the Doctor. Now just stop with the Doctor Who? running gag (was kinda fun the first time) and i'm really happy
first time i heard the 'Doctor who?' thing I literally cringed
its gotten a bit better now it has meaning but christ, it took a while to build up to anything less than cheesy

I hope he is angry and pissed off like that in doctor who. Be a nice damn change.
Captaldi looks like he's going to be a great Doctor, but tbqh I was kind of hoping for a female Doctor.
I mean it's pretty clear that the show is starting to move in a more progressive direction, and I think it would be a nice change of pace if we see a woman take on the role sometime.
The show needs to be ready for it - you can't hamfist it - but, theoretically speaking, the Time Lord regeneration process should be able to turn the Doctor into something else than a white European male :v:.

See: the Corsair.
I'm excited, it'll be nice having an older gentleman as the Doctor for a while. Maybe he'll bring the show in a more serious and dark direction. Although I've loved Smith, I hate how they've tried to make it more comedic over the past few seasons. Tennant was a fantastic balance between serious and funny; but his humor was just a façade to cover the torment going on in his head.

Netflix is best.
What was going on in his head.
Well in Tennant's run he was going through a ton of loss with losing Rose and a few other notable characters. On top of that you discover [sp]That he essentially ran away from Gallifrey and the time war general[/sp]
Then there's of course his [sp]Failing to help the Master which ultimately led in him fucking over his entire species[/sp]
That's just to name a few notable things. I have to say Tennant had a lot more trauma compared to Smith.
Hopefully he is a more serious doctor along the lines of the 9th
Pretty exciting news. I hope he won't be disappointing.
Hopefully he is a more serious doctor along the lines of the 9th
Yeah, ninth was my favourite. This probably an unpopular opinion, but Tennant never really did it for me - he didn't have quite the presence that Eccleston had. He seemed a little too human and not scary/dangerous/alien enough, somehow, though he did have his moments. I can imagine Capaldi would be very good in this area.
is this a religious thing or why do I see it everywhere, i'm confused

For some probably

The series became very big internationally again (or, at least, in the West) with the introduction of streaming and popular Doctors.
As a person who never saw an episode, where'd be the best place to start?
I feel like this is something I should at least have some knowledge over.

2005, episode 1
and forwards.

It's amazing how so many (mainly in the press) forget that Malcolm was never the angriest person in The Thick of It. Jamie was. Hardly anyone watch TToI, even though it was so good.

This is very rare to happen to timelords. The corsair is more of an abnormality for the timelord race than something common.
In fact I think the Corsair is the only one who changed, even then, only once iirc.

Why do you have to insert your politics into a kids show? The colour or sex of the actor shouldn't even matter. Shall we make the Doctor disabled next? Would that please you?

Um I'm an English student? One of the things I focus on is how narrative reflects its readers. Media is inherently charged with "politics" - from kid's shows to crime dramas, narratives inherently reflect their viewers' social and cultural beliefs. That's why one culture's mythological narrative is radically different from another's mythology.
Ignoring society/culture's influence on storytelling is one of the most ignorant things you can do. Our culture is intertwined with the stories we want to tell. I'm not going to go any further than that, though, because this is a thread about Peter Capaldi's role as the Doctor - not if Doctor Who is biased or excluding others. If you want to have that conversation, let's have it in a PM or mass debate. I'm not turning this thread into a spiral about how media is generally geared towards certain social constructs.
