Might be stupid statement and question but, I would never rely on Space X in future, I mean I only hear bad things about their tests, things being scheduled then canceled or failing, haven't heard much of good progress or achievement yet. So whats up with that? I don't follow Space X that tight, what are they doing exactly? Building public rocket or what? And what are their challanges that's causing so much problems for them?
They built the most advanced rocket in the world that can land itself back on land to be reused again. It provides cheap access to space. They are the biggest manufacturer of rocket engines on earth. They build the only vessel that can go to the International Space Station and back without burning up. They will be the only American access manned spaceflight for a few years. They intend to build rockets to go to Mars. That is their primary goal. Every rocket has errors. They're a relatively new company so errors can be expected. They fix them when they pop up and try to prevent them the next time.

And lately they haven't been having any real problems (except for their test rig that was never meant to go to space anyway crashing), most of their rockets were able to complete their missions even if some system failure occurred mid-flight (I remember Falcon-9's engine blowing up, yet it still managed to deliver Dragon to the ISS, and some other time Dragon lost control of 3/4 of its RCS modules right before docking with the ISS, yet they managed to fix it from down here after just one orbit.)
Then you're not paying attention to them at all, none of their rockets so far have failed completely (only their test rig crashed once, but that was not a real mission and never meant to go to space), and all the rockets that had problems even mid flight have still managed to complete their missions. The Falcon 9 has never failed it's primary mission, and has multiple redundancies and computer fail safes.

stream began and radiovoice guy is talking about the rocket http://www.ustream.tv/nasahdtv?rmalang=en_US
How long to launch? I'm at an engagement party..
How long to launch? I'm at an engagement party..
15 minutes I think.
Looked like the countdown timer read 12:45 or so a few mins ago
Go for launch
We got liftoff.
Here we go! 9 minutes until landing.
You little ripper!!! Can't wait for the landing.
I really hope they have a camera on the ship so we can watch the landing
god damnit each time someone talks a 2nd guy starts talking at the exact same time :v:
Did they put a camera in a bucket of water?
probably inside the fuel tank, and now it's floating all over the place :p [t]http://i.imgur.com/DvEsZrT.jpg[/t]
Yeah is there a camera for the landing pad?
There's cameras. If it lands we'll see it in a few hours but it needs to be processed.
There's cameras. If it lands we'll see it in a few hours but it needs to be processed.
Oh right, your quote
Here we go! 9 minutes until landing.
Confused me.
And now we wait. Glad to see this thing light up finally. [t]http://sc-cdn.scaleengine.net/i/cf742981b6bbc50ff322bb817efa42ac1.png[/t] [t]http://sc-cdn.scaleengine.net/i/2c2c6721c11fab80f31afa356b8e0bf71.png[/t] It landed hard on the barge
Rocket made it to drone spaceport ship, but landed hard. Close, but no cigar this time. Bodes well for the future tho.
https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/553855109114101760 :(

RIP
It's over. Replays now.
There's cameras. If it lands we'll see it in a few hours but it needs to be processed.
Can you write on my wall when it's processed, please? Glad that there was orbital insertion.
Can you write on my wall when it's processed, please? Glad that there was orbital insertion.
Not going to happen. Rocket exploded/didn't land properly. Video was pitch dark and foggy. Next launch is January 29th, they'll try again then.
Even though there's damage, they brought the accuracy from 10km to 10m. That's damn good. Can't wait to see the improvements
‏
That's still a bloody huge accomplishment.
I'd love to see a pic of what "too hard&fast" is for a rocket, also he said some of the support structures might need replaced but they didn't say it exploded or anything, I wonder if it simply hit the deck, crumpled then fell over Still an amazing achievement that it managed to land on target, now they just have to stick the landing
I guess it ended up being a 50% success after all v:v:v
