NASA looking for volunteers for mission to Mars. The catch, you don't come back.

I believe this is an extremely important point: sacrificing human beings for the greater good, obviously in exchange for something, like wealth for their families. Humanity would develop much faster if a grand part of the moral burden of research was dropped, and governments weren't demonized for every death for science.
This makes me feel optimistic.
This sounds like a really bad b-horror plot
Space disease mutates colonists into killer poltergeists, it's up to ice cube to save the day
Why not send Criminals up.
Why not send Criminals up.
Because sending psychopaths into space is always a good idea
brb getting popcorn
me + 3 other women :quagmire:
I remember this was one of the first ideas they had for the moon as well before they came to their senses and made the LEM.
NASA hated the idea.
Edit: It's here.

It's those idiots who say dump people on the moon and just send them supplies constantly.
Edit: I would vouch to do it though I'm unsure if I could pull all of my computers out of the gravity well.
I nominate Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and the entire jersey shore cast.
[editline]31st October 2010[/editline]
wait terrible idea
They'd all die from cocaine withdrawal.
'It would cost to much to bring them home however supplies would be sent from earth"
How is that cheaper?
You don't have to send a crewed vehicle, what with the pressurized cabin, sleeping quarters, ect, and then making it a vehicle that can go there and back.

It's effin Mars, not Australia.
We really have to amp up our international efforts for space exploration. For the people on Mars, tt'd suck to have NASA's budget cut just because of some new administration.
"Mr Worden suggested that new technologies, such as synthetic biology and alterations to the human genome, could be explored ahead of the mission."
Doom 3 anyone?

Doom is about a portal to hell.
Facepunch would volunteer if there was Internet.
The initial landing would be exciting for sure, but I'm not sure if living on a baron, red planet for 60 years sounds very fun. Imagine if a supply drop missed its mark...
Facepunch would volunteer if there was Internet.
I'd think you would be too busy doing Martian stuff to look at porn.
me + 3 other women :quagmire:
Sounds like a shitty reality show
I nominate a turtle named Duck.
I'd think you would be too busy doing Martian stuff to look at porn.
Don't doubt us boyo. If we can, we will find porn.
I nominate myself because who , seriously , wouldn't want to have the title "founder of mars"?
plus it'd be awesome
Your name would be written into the history and you'd be in the spotlight for god knows how long.
Facepunch would volunteer if there was Internet.
The ping would suck on interplanetary servers.
I'll go but i need lots porn.
And Internet
When Mars is closest to Earth light takes 4 minutes to travel one-way. When Earth and Mars are farthest, light takes 20 minutes to go one-way.
This means that, assuming Mars is at its closest, the internet latency would be 8 minutes. So you'd press the submit button on a Google search and it'd take 8 minutes to get the results.
If Marts is at its farthest, it would take 40 minutes to load a single web page.
Sure, you would be remembered in history for a long time, and you get to go to space. But is it worth your life?

Where do I sign up?
I picture this like putting in an application for a beta for an MMO. ;P
The lag would be a bitch, but Marvin the Martian would look so cool on a business card.
Pretty damn sure we'll end with technologies thar allow people to come back eventually.......
But then again, you could be stuck on the damn planet for years; probably even decades
To give up my life on Earth? Nah.

Many who have been burned into history for good or bad have lost their lives.
