Oh god, DOOM 3 slowly coming to life
ping would be terrible
[editline]31st October 2010[/editline]
mars should get its own internet seperate from the internet on earth for playing games. That way you can at least play online games with other people on mars. Things like browsing the internet wouldn't be so bad with super high ping, but still kinda suck, but games on earth to mars would be downright terrible.
Nah man just get a T1 connection
I'd go on the condition it was me and five bisexual women.
I wish that the major space agencies would unite to do something like this. I mean, NASA is doing a great job, but imagine how fast this would be going if the ESA, JAXA, RFSA and the USAF Space Command all united towards colonizing Mars. I'd much rather see them unite in my lifetime then see one of them individually colonize a planet, tbh.
Honestly? If I had the requirements, I'd take this. I have no earthly posessions I long of, no emotional attachments, and the vast cosmos is the only thing that inspires me anymore. Even if this was a one way mission, and I'd surely die out there, I wouldn't mind. I just want to see the beautiful nebulae and whatnot in person before I am shot in a gang related mishap and become a crime statistic.
I'll go.... how's the bandwidth over there?
It's the mission of a lifetime, heh
i know i'm going to be called out for this, but we need a totally immoral national leader in this day and age
under hitler's reign, german scientists did what nobody else would do, researching many subjects that you can easily get a life sentence over

That has nothing to do with an "immoral leader". They simply helped technology to give them the better edge in war. But for other scientists, most of the hold backs is funding and regulation.
You have to already be on the space program, from what I understand.
That would be optimal. Since these folks are already well suited for space flight.
I wonder if you have to be an astronaut to apply...
Well, we all know there is no living conditions available on the planet right now. But at the beginning, the living environment will be rather hostile and unforgiving.
I would go if we got stuff from earth occasionally, like new video games and shit.
It may sound stupid, but I think it would get extremely boring without any new forms of entertainment. I know, you're on a new planet, so how could you get bored, etc. etc; Yes, it would be exciting to be somewhere other than Earth, but what about after you've lived there for a decade or two?
Old games / music / movies / whatever can't entertain you forever (at least, not me). I would go insane if I was stuck with the same shit that I have now for the rest of my life.
This is really badass.
No gravity on mars? Not a problem, take my mom with you, she has her own gravitational field around her.
Hold on, this has reminded me...
Why doesn't NASA just fire water guns at the ground by their feet, that way they can launch to Mars and it would cost little.
I'm expecting a movie about this in, let's say... 2013?

I don't see no "based on a true story".
I wonder if you have to be an astronaut to apply...
It'd be pretty damn stupid not to send astronauts. Seeing as there would be alot of cash put on this.

so does my ex, jabba the slut.

Dude, pot and FP don't mix...what the HELL are you talking about?
I would go, if the mission looked reliably enough. Problem is there is next to 0 chance they might pick me.
I'd do it. Mainly cause I got multiple mental health trouble and I could at least be useful before diying by my hand or by an hostile environnement
I am afraid they are going to pick the elite of as healthy as possible, if possible genetically perfect individuals, as cosmonauts usually are. They don't need crew which will die half through the mission from their own health problems, and they also need to minimize the need for medical support as much as possible.
Interesting concept. I wonder what it'd be like, never stepping foot on Earth again after leaving it.
Well I'm sure it won't be so bad. You get sent supplies and the Earth isn't exactly impossibly far away so radio communication is still possible. Hell, you'd probably be able to request things to be sent i.e. the latest awesome video game so it wouldn't feel so far from home.
Only thing that would pretty much suck is no internet, and the fact that unless the project has a SERIOUS financial backing that you'd be SOL if they ran out of money and could no longer afford to spend millions sending you supplies every month.
The good news is that if the project did have enough financial backing, making it so human lives are directly linked to the success of this project would mean that space exploration and science effort would accelerate 10-fold - the government and the public wouldn't let a space project fail or get cut massively when there are human lives dependant on it's progress.
Also, we need to get this completed before 2050 if the US wants to win a science victory.
Average mars distance from earth is 14 light (so also radio signal) minutes. This means half a hour for signal to go both ways. That's enough for a lazy chess session.
If you honestly believe that then your statement belies your ignorance.
Biologists will be extremely valuable in colonizing new worlds. Who do you think is going to work to counteract any unknown diseases, viruses, bacteria, or parasites that might exist on the new planet? Who's going to modify earth-borne plant strains to adapt to the new alien landscape? To keep the humans healthy?
Alien parasites :rolleye:
How is it ignorant to believe that there's nothing native living on Mars?
edit:
not much biology on Mars, except what humanity brings with itself
It's difficult to miss the second part of that message. Of course humans would bring other forms of life with them. Probably some simple plants, algae or lichen at least. But there's nothing native on that rock. The conditions are harsh and living space would be extremely limited.
Whatever research and modification you could do there would be both easier and cheaper on Earth. Any important data, results etc. would be sent directly back to Earth to be done completely again and quintuple-checked because the smallest mistake could cost lives.
Early on it wouldn't be a particularly interesting place for a biologist.

Fuck, I got HypoThyroidism. :(
I nominate myself, sounds sick
Knowing NASA's progress on matters I'd assume by the time they'd need their volunteers we'd have all died by a nuclear war.
If you go
you will become a Martian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

life on mars?
I wonder how babbys born on mars would grow up to be. It's only got 38% surface gravity of earth, so they could be really really tall but weak @_@
I nominate Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers.
You do realise they would breed and create a new race made out of baby Biebers and Cyruses?
Imagine if an alien spaceship would land on Mars to see if there were any intelligent lifeforms on it...
Greate , now i will have nightmares :P
While it sounds nice and all, the amount of money they have for the project is a joke at the moment
