Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
The idea isn't feasible to put solar panels on the wall. It's a waste of energy. You could be placing them into the empty fields beside it if anything, and get more use out of them. Maybe people would complain less if he suggested this stuff earlier instead of hamfisting it in after the Paris climate fiasco.
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
More like "fuck Trump for wanting to spend more money on a pointless wall" But go ahead and straw man away.
So assuming 100% efficiency everyday, which is impossible, and 100% coverage. That could apparently cover the US yearly power demand almost 3 times over. US Yearly Power demand is 3.913 billion kWh. The above hypothetical would provide 11.68 billion kWh per year. So if we went with a more modest estimate of panel placement and coverage, it could still hypothetically put a pretty big dent in the reliance on other power generation.
Not to mention that adding an appreciable amount of solar panels will only increase the cost of the wall, not to mention energy storage infrastructure (which is important, because solar does you no good at night after all). It will definitely cost more than whatever sub-$100 billion figures his administration is pulling out of their asses. And as mentioned, there's also the possibility of looting, not just from Mexico's side either. If anything I would implicate more looting from our side, especially people going after the wiring.
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
He shouldn't operate on the idea of "satisfying the left" with half-hearted comments. Stopping climate change shouldn't be a fucking partisan issue; it's everyone's planet, and it's everyone's problem.
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
Border wall: -50 happiness of the Liberal Faction Border wall with solar panels: +5 happiness of the Liberal Faction Now just gotta spam US flags and gardens over major cities to make everyone forget about Syria. Man politics is easy.
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
Throwing more money at a massive waste of money won't make it any better.
So, assuming the solar panels could be placed strategically enough to reach a decent amount of efficiency, and relying on the napkin math stated earlier.. what's stupid about them? Wall aside. I mean no matter where you put solar panels it's going to be expensive, so I don't see "but it's unreasonably expensive" as a good excuse when compared to "it could theoretically supply enough solar power for the entire country"
So, assuming the solar panels could be placed strategically enough to reach a decent amount of efficiency, and relying on the napkin math stated earlier.. what's stupid about them? Wall aside. I mean no matter where you put solar panels it's going to be expensive, so I don't see "but it's unreasonably expensive" as a good excuse when compared to "it could (within reason) supply enough solar power for the entire country"
You would be increasing maintenance costs tenfold, you would be increasing the cost of an already useless venture a hundred times, you would also have to import most of these solar panels since most of the production is done outside of the US which stands at odds with Trump's "protectionist" policies and also against the point of the fucking wall. It's also hilariously stupid that Trump can see the benefits of renewable energy while reaffirming the USA's investments into fossil fuels. The napkin math doesn't work either because there is no such thing as a 100% efficient solar panel. Peak efficiency with the highest quality panels is like 20%.
This is dumber than when trump thought firing comey would make the left happy.
The napkin math doesn't work either because there is no such thing as a 100% efficient solar panel. Peak efficiency with the highest quality panels is like 20%.
In my region (which isn't terribly far from the Mexico border, but still a 5-6 hour drive from here), at peak summer hours, we get about 1.3KW worth of solar energy per-square meter. That's TOTAL radiant energy from the sun. Factoring in 15% average solar panel efficiency- Aw fuck it, let's go with the optimistic 20% figure, that means you get a whole 260W per-square meter. Assuming the wall is the whole 3,201km length of the US-Mexico border, and assuming we put one square meter panel every meter (not accounting for the width of mounting frames, tracking equipment, etc.), that's 659,406,000 watts of power assuming they all have ideal sun exposure (which they won't, because of the curvature of the Earth there will always be some panels getting less sun than others). But hey, what's so bad about a wall generating 660~ MW of solar energy? Nothing if you're using it as quickly as you're generating it, which brings us to storage. Let's assume we can use Lithium cells to store this energy. A standard 18650 cell (one of the most widely produced rechargeable lithium cells currently available) typically stores about 3500mAH on the high-ish end. So at 3.7V, 3500mAH, you get a total of 12.95 watt-hours capacity. So assuming your charging circuits are up to snuff, you would need 50,919,383 or so of these batteries to store 1 hour's worth of energy from those solar cells. For one hour. The average price of one of these cells retail is about $10-20 for a protected cell (that is a cell with its own protection circuitry built-in) and less for un-protected cells. Good, name brand cells, too, like Panasonic, not the stuff you get from Cheapistan on DXtreme. So assuming that retail price is 300% wholesale, you're looking about $5 a cell at the least, meaning one hour's worth of energy storage alone (not counting housing the cells, charging circuitry, wires, added infrastructure for energy delivery, facility maintenance, etc.) would run you about... $254.6 million dollars. PER HOUR OF ENERGY STORED. And that's not taking into account energy losses via transmission wires.
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
I mean, it's great that he's suggesting solar panels. It's just blatantly obvious that he's sprinkling them over a pile of shit to make it palatable. Solar panels panels placed anywhere else than on a flat surface, angled towards the sun, and actually inside the country will be less than half as good. It's not an evil idea, it's just terribly stupid. The response from me would have been 100% positive if he had just suggested solar panel fields, even if he wanted them to pay for the wall. Just, why on the wall? Why?
Fuck Trump he hates the environment! Trump suggests something to try to satisfy the left. Fuck Trump he is just trying to make us happy!
Most of these "LET'S PUT SOLAR PANELS ON X BECAUSE IT'S THERE!!!" ideas are stupid as shit because there ain't good reason to put that shit there - put it on the ground and let that shit track the sun like God intended. If Trump went out and committed to investing heavily in sustainable energy, I'd respect and applaud that, but this is just a dumb suggestion that will amount to fuck all. Just build some solar panels in a field, dude.
I think it's what's known as "grasping at straws"
"Hey guys, why don't we say we'll paint the wall into a rainbow? That'll make the democrats happy right?"
"Hey guys, why don't we say we'll paint the wall into a rainbow? That'll make the democrats happy right?"
"Not even Obongo would have thought of this"
Better make it rainbow too to rake in the lgbt community
but he presented the panels as a way to fund the wall
but i thought solar was killing jobs and totally a waste of money?
It's like he's trying to have his massively expensive, climate change saving, Mexican blocking, shit cake and eat it too.
trumps really gotta get this wall thing underway if hes got any chance of a second term.
