i've never gotten a straight answer, but what is SO great about this series that people are going crazy about?
Nothing.
Nothing.
then why is there such a fuss as to if the 3rd is coming out or not?
wow, rate me dumb for a reasonable question
i've never gotten a straight answer, but what is SO great about this series that people are going crazy about?
Have you played them?
i've never gotten a straight answer, but what is SO great about this series that people are going crazy about?
In my opinion, it's the engine. Source was, and still is, incredible. I wait for its heir.
In fact, I don't care about the HL series at all. I played them and found them rather meh. What I absolutely love is what's under it and the countless mods it spawned.
then why is there such a fuss as to if the 3rd is coming out or not?
It's sarcasm. HL is actually the worst game ever and it's been a running joke for the past 15 years to pretend that it's decent
then why is there such a fuss as to if the 3rd is coming out or not?
Because it's been 5 years god damnit.
then why is there such a fuss as to if the 3rd is coming out or not?
Because they're fans of the franchise?
What kind of stupid question is that.
then why is there such a fuss as to if the 3rd is coming out or not?
Because lots of people love the series for the story and all things left hidden in the scenery, not to mention what Gman really has to do with all of this.
They fell in love with HL for actually having a real story and just being groundbreaking in most possible aspects when it comes to what and how a game can be. And they fell in love with HL2 for it's story and groundbreaking physics and how it incorporated it into puzzles.
They hope that HL3 will do something groundbreaking again. And who knows, maybe it does? Valve has the potential to do so.
Because they're fans of the franchise?

right, calm down. i'm asking not if they're fans but WHY it's seen as so great
right, calm down. i'm asking not if they're fans but WHY it's seen as so great
Because the original Half-Life shaped the genre into what it is.
You know, Portal was a huge mindfuck at first and a huge revolution in puzzle gaming.
I think HL3 might have something similar going on. Not portals, but a similar effect.
After all, it's what I feel Half Life has always done. HL1 revolutionized FPS, HL2 revolutionized physics, maybe HL3 revolutionizes graphics or dimensions...
speaking of dimensions, john carmack is working on those goggles ain't he
and gabe newell supported it
not a conspiracy theorist but if gabe likes the idea, it could very well be plausible

I wouldn't be surprised if Valve games get support for the VR once the occulus reaches general availability.

It's entirely possible they'll add support, like they did with the novint falcon and whatever the thing for Portal 2 was. But they're not going to shape an entire game around a peripheral that will almost certainly be dead in a few years
right, calm down. i'm asking not if they're fans but WHY it's seen as so great
amazing mod tools, decent engine, awesome story, great gameplay.
you wouldn't be posting here on facepunch without half life, you know
I think you really had to play HL or HL2 when they first came out to truly appreciate what they did for gaming. I don't think I've ever felt that same sense of absolute wonder in a game since I played them. It does physics and facial animation better than most modern games... and this was over 10 years ago. Not to mention the absolutely enthralling storyline and universe, when games had compelling characters and interesting plot developments. Now it's just commies, nukes and regenerating health.
This is why people are so excited about HL3, because we're fucking dying to get back into the hazard suit and find out what happens. I'm sure there'll be lots of new gameplay to boot, as well as shiny new graphics... but all that shit is secondary to the storytelling. All I want is a conclusion.
If this does happen, i have two words about what should be in the game: Grappling Hook.

2 booths.
but not a third.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
That reminds me, do we have a gamescom thread?
edit: nevermind, give me dumbs because I'm bad at looking.
Please... Oh, please!
Nope.
Guild Wars 3 is being announced yay, I'm getting bored of 2, which hasn't come out yet!
just imagine how huge of an impact the gaming world will receive when HL3 is finally revealed
oh my god i'm so glad i'm going to be alive for it. it's going to literally be the biggest gaming announcement of all time.
Not even going to speculate; not even going to bother. I think I'm done with Valve when it comes to Half Life 3.
If this turns out to be true, then good. If it doesn't? Well, whatever.
Watch as people get their high high high hopes up then it doesn't happen
SO THEY BLAME VALVE FOR IT AGAIN
OH GOD WHAT'S THE POINT. YOU KNOW WE WILL BE LET DOWN ONCE AGAIN.
right, calm down. i'm asking not if they're fans but WHY it's seen as so great
Excellent pacing, atmosphere, and story. Along with revolutionary gameplay. I remember being blown away by the way you could use physics to interact with the environment and solve puzzles when it first came out. And this was at a time when just having ragdoll physics was considered impressive.

The forums will exist, it is just that it will be completely deserted because there was only FaceWound or whatever.
Probably.
HL3 is probably going to turn into a duke nukem forever situation.
When/if it gets revealed, people flip a fuck and name it the second arrival of christ himself.
It releases and is a mediocre/above average game.
Hear the users as people around the world cry out because it wasn't all they expected it to be.
I really think thats what valve is trying to avoid. They know if they say they aren't working on it/its canceled then they will lose a bucketload of money, and their rep will be trashed, and it will be posted on every single gaming blog/news source known to man.
It's been a long time since I've gotten my hopes up for HL3, not gonna happen anytime soon either, it's been far too long for that.
