This means we won't have the groans of a thousand mappers, if they can simply just put their maps into the new engine and change stuff around and make it bigger, like a W.I.P. instead of an entirely new map.

Valve wrote a driver for Intel GPUs which will be/is open source. So hopefully the Mesa guys should pick it up and we might see support for it land on all big 3 GPUs.
