Starting this off by saying this is a very early announcement and was made to dispel rumors that they were dropping hardware.
If it's new hardware, it's most likely an actual 3DS successor and likely won't release until 2017. If it's a new console, 2018.
Good. The "new 3ds" was a terrible move.
New 3DS is arguably what 3DS should have been in the first place. It essentially brings it up to a Wii U-level feature set, just as the DSi brought many Wii features to the DS line.
It's probably a move that didn't need to happen with the 3DS already out, though. Ideally, Nintendo should be developing their home consoles and handhelds in closer tandem than they currently are, so that we can avoid this "mid-gen handheld upgrade" we've seen twice in a row now. Bringing the handheld out first and then having it play catch-up just isn't very good planning (though to be fair, there wasn't a single piece of hardware from any company in Gen7 that didn't get a major revision of some sort due to how long it was.)
I'd say they're the most polished looking games of this generation in terms of actual graphical fidelity it's not that great.
And they usually run at like 720p. The Wii U is sort of stuck in the previous generation.
Sm4sh was 1080p 60fps, can't speak for the other ones.
I honestly think it may be the rumored "hybrid" concept:
Simultaneously a handheld and console announcement, where it's either:
A) there will be a "console" model with superior graphics and a "handheld" model that accepts the media of the console version, but compensates by setting the LODs lower.
or
B) the handheld is the platform, but the console acts like a spec booster when used with a TV (which is how I feel the Wii U tablet should have worked, it feels like a bit of lost potential not to at least have it be capable of offscreen play without the console itself being on)
Iwata admitted in interviews that the structure of their consoles and handhelds are too dissimilar, and that he'd like to bring them closer together.
I'd like to imagine Sm4sh (and MH3U to an extent) is the result of them experimenting with cross-platform games.
Going to be a mixture of Console and Handheld. I don't know how they're going to do it, but seems like the most probable thing.
I'm betting on "NX" being a tablet computer whose express purpose is to purchase and auction off amiibos

Don't forget them enabling crossbuy now for developers to use and showcasing it with Mario vs Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars

um no
Hopefully a direct and superior competitor to the PS4/Xbone platforms.
I am just saying
If Nintendo made a phone, I would buy that shit at warp fuckin speed

like the Wii U?

The Wii U isn't magic - its GPU is worse than both the PS4 and the Xbone, and there aren't two ways about it. What's especially aggravating is this quote:
But look at that list for the PlayStation 4... while I love what Sony is doing with the console, we can see that Killzone isn't native 60fps, but only 60fps in multiplayer with tons of downscaling of the graphics and visual effects.
So he's basically admitting that turning down quality settings will make games run at higher resolutions and frame rates. Smash may run at 1080p 60FPS, but there's a very obvious reason for that:

At least these two games mentioned in the article do not run at 1080p 60FPS:
Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8
Not saying the Wii U is a bad console to buy or that the game suck, the Wii U is just simply not as powerful as the newer consoles.
um no
Um yes, actually.
I'll provide you with some info on that when I get home.
But for now, have this slightly old post I made about this very topic: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1438303&p=46545840&viewfull=1#post46545840

Nice very outdated article that gets a lot of things wrong.
Either way though if you're caring more about graphics than gameplay then you're doing something wrong
Wii U may be inferior in terms of graphics output but damn the games are good

For sure, I just despise misinformation regardless of which side it favors.
They need at least four years to come up with another terrible name for their handheld that confuses customers and kills their sales.
Well this ensures stupid people don't buy their systems... just children, mothers and fans.
Really though, I can't see how people understand Xbox 360 to Xbox One but not Wii to WiiU. I mean Xbone got its criticsm but no one is just flatout thinking it's not a new console.

Probably because:
1) the box demonstrates the tablet as if it is more important than the console, which could be interpreted as it being a peripheral for some mysterious model of Wii that the user has not seen before
2) it follows the naming trend Nintendo has used for Wii peripherals (Wii Speak, Wii Zapper, Wii Balance Board, etc.), so it could be logically concluded by name alone that Wii _ is a peripheral, whereas a peripheral for the Xbox 360 would still be Xbox 360 _ and not just Xbox _ (not saying Xbox One isn't a completely garbage name, because it is, but this is actually the biggest reason more people think the Wii U isn't a system than they do the Xbox One)
3) Nintendo advertises it almost as "well" as Sony advertises the Vita, though the latter now actually has a point for not trying to advertise their system.
As much as I love Nintendo, naming the Wii successor Wii U and the new 3DS model "New 3DS" were embarrassingly trivial mistakes that shouldn't have made it off the concept board for names.
Honestly they should have just called it the 3DSi
