Autism's symptoms are caused by a rewiring of the neurons in the brain. Good luck 'curing' that. It's not a disease. Its like being born gay.
If air pollution was combated I think more cases can be prevented.

I'd say fill in the blanks, but that'd get me banned, so to summarise:
-They treat autism as a disease that can and ought to be cured, as opposed to be understood and integrated into society.
-In the past (though admittedly they have now changed their stance, they've already contributed) they have rallied against vaccines citing them as a cause for autism. Even though said belief has been knocked down since day one, they sunk some serious cash into debating it.
-Their propaganda and the media they promote really shows autism as some kind of monster within that is effectively life ruining, while ignoring the potential and the positive aspects to it.
There are other organisations that represent autism infinitely better than this organisation does, but now they've been handed a nice bit of cash, and potentially a lot of recognition.

It is true that to an unprepared parent autism can be a challenging thing to work with, but by god do they try to demonise it
So what exactly is wrong with it being seen as a disease? I don't see any problem with that because most autism is overall bad for the person in question. Yes, there are some savants who have high functioning autism, but a great portion of them are mentally impaired, it's just how the disorder functions.
Any organization that "raises awareness" is bullshit and is using more of the money on themselves than the problem they say they "fight" for. You're going at them for all the wrong reasons.

. . What?
A lot of people here lack a working knowledge of autism. Please research ASD before you say it's a disease that can be cured like it's the flu.
This video is very interesting.

People at one point in time said that cancer was incurable. Look at the major strives we've made since that was considered to be fact. If we're able to cure autism in the future, whatever means that implies, if the autistic child wishes to take advantage of said cure, why stop them?

Sure, but that's not the problem with Autism Speaks.
(Though that aside I'm not sure if it purely technically qualifies as disease since it's not acquired. Could be a translation issue on my part though, because at least in German you normally would almost never use the word "Krankheit" (disease/illness) but "Störung" (disorder) or "Behinderung" (disability) in this case.)

Yeah, it kinda renders any argument about 'curing' autism moot. Science just isn't good enough to even approach any kind of effective treatment. Seriously, what would it take? Gene therapy to adjust the synaptic formations in a developing brain? We'll probably figure out how to download our minds into robot bodies before we figure that out.
If someone figured out a way to take care of sensory overstimulation, though, that would be pretty good. I imagine a lot of ASD people would be happy to take a pill that just makes it so bright lights, loud noises, and strong flavors aren't overwhelming anymore.

You do understand that TedX talks do not have the same scrutiny put onto them as TED talks, right? Any idiot can get a platform for a TedX talk.
Clearly if I understand it if I know that it affects your social and mental development. Not all people with autism are savants.

The English definition of disease 100% fits Autism and similar disorders -- because they're disorders.
