Not really, western Ukraine has always been more pro-west. Eastern Ukraine has always been more Russian.
Yeah but the entire country was ruled by a pro-Russian prime minister and now its controlled by euromaiden and its leaders, and they clearly favor the west.

Like every other Ukrainian politician. In fact he created a lot of problems for Putin. The new government in power reverted to a system which was once easily influenced by Russia and now Russia has a HUGE bargaining chip.
I can imagine the ballot papers Do you want Crimea to join the Russian federation? Yes [] Double Yes []
This isn't a fair vote because the Russians who will vote to join Russia really shouldn't be there in the first place
Ugh, and why is that?

"I still like Ike" I like old people... Anyways, you know what this whole situation reminds me of; this one country in a certain game, the game being ArmA 2, the country Chernarus...
Ugh, and why is that?
To my understanding they were moved there under the USSR and are only voting to join Russia because that's where they're from. I could be wrong and if I am, apologies.
Results are in! 106% are for joining Russia!
To Russia or not to Russia. Ballot options in english:
1. Are you in favour of the reunification of Crimea with Russia as a part of the Russian Federation? 2. Are you in favour of restoring the 1992 Constitution and the status of Crimea as a part of Ukraine?

Voting begins. To Russia or not to Russia. Ballot options in english:
This is insane... I would have never thought that anything close to this would happen several months ago. It is truly crazy how bad things can get in just a short time.
Imagine how embarrassing it'll be for Crimea and Russia if they end up voting in favor of Ukraine?
Imagine how embarrassing it'll be for Crimea and Russia if they end up voting in favor of Ukraine?
There is no chance of that. The corruption plus the voter bullying garuntee that there is no chance.
You can claim that the referendum is unfair and will be "fixed" in Russia's favour. Yet, if the referendum was held by Ukraine (as per their constitution) then it stands equal chance of being fixed as they stand to lose territory.

So it's either Russia or Ukraine? They're not even going to humor the idea of independence?
There is no chance of that. The corruption plus the voter bullying garuntee that there is no chance.
I know that, 's why I said 'imagine'. It'd just be hilarious, Russia and Crimea being all tantrum-throwing for the last month, only to end up with the people being 'Yeah, no. We're Ukrainians, guys.'
So it's either Russia or Ukraine? They're not even going to humor the idea of independence?
The "1992 Constitution" option means greater autonomy. Crimean leader has already stated that he will use the powers provided by greater autonomy to ask to be annexed by Russia. So there's that.
I am kinda uncertain on this. If it turns out that a vast majority of the people of a region do honestly want to secede, then what's to say that's so bad?
The problem imo is that the vote is taking place while the area is occupied by Russia. That's pretty intimidating and people might vote to join Russia because of that.
The problem imo is that the vote is taking place while the area is occupied by Russia. That's pretty intimidating and people might vote to join Russia because of that.
or rather people who oppose being put into russia are too scared to vote against it
i'm pretty sure Russia will get this one regardless if they rig the elections or not Crimea has a very large Russian majority, there's no need for them to further do anything tbh
i'm pretty sure Russia will get this one regardless if they rig the elections or not Crimea has a very large Russian majority, there's no need for them to further do anything tbh
That's assuming all the Russians in Crimea want it to be a part of Russia again. Assuming an unrigged vote (unlikely, at least in terms of voter intimidation and disinformation), it's possible enough of them would dissent for it not to go through. As if it ultimately matters, though; I figure Putin would think 49% is close enough.
The "1992 Constitution" option means greater autonomy. Crimean leader has already stated that he will use the powers provided by greater autonomy to ask to be annexed by Russia. So there's that.
So then, they don't even need to rig the votes, because the entire ballot is rigged so that they'll join Russia either way? Hm, 2 choices, same outcome. I guess they aren't so different from us after all.
The peoples right to self determination. I didn't see anyone upset when the population of the Falklands voted to stay with the UK..
Russia is economically better off, the vote is rigged. Pensions are twice as high in Russia, the vote is rigged and unfair. Poor Ukraine cannot compete.
I don't remember that part where British forces held the entire island hostage.
It was around the time they kind of you know, went in and colonised it. The same thing they did for everywhere they went back then.
