University of Maryland investigating Kappa Sigma frat after racist e-mail leaks
You're pretty confused about what Greek life is like. It's really a life changing experience. You aren't buying friends. Dues are paid for insurance purposes and to allow for effective purchasing power and to ensure that you can have a functioning organization. The world runs on money, there's no getting around it. Being part of a Greek organization lets you help out in your community in a way which you and your friends feel is most beneficial (We ask each other "Who in the community needs the most help?") I've helped run food drives, charity runs, fundraisers, etc. Professionally I feel better off having helped handle the finances of a business. I have people all around the country I can contact when I'm in need of assistance. It's an absolutely brilliant thing to be a part of from a networking standpoint.
Greek life is much more than 'buying' friends. If anyone is socially inept, it's the man who thinks he needs to speak ill of people he clearly knows little about. I'll ask, how active are you in your community? Perhaps you should revisit the idea.
way to go facepunch
in a thread about racism people still fail to see that blatant generalizations are bad

Fraternities and racism aren't even close to being the same thing, what are you on about
"stop discriminating against the poor oppressed rich guys!!!"
Fraternities and racism aren't even close to being the same thing, what are you on about
Making blatant generalizations about someone's character is wrong, regardless of whether it's based on the color of their skin, or their participation in a fraternity.
Interesting to see that everyone in this thread seems to agree on the first one, yet has no problem with the second.
He got kicked out of the frat right after it happened, they just didn't report it to the university (Which wasn't required). I go to UMD and everyone is pretty upset. I feel like he'll be punished pretty badly, probably not directly expelled though. Honestly I feel like everyone knowing his name and face is one of the worst punishments.
Kinda scary though. In this case, he actually did send the email, but I feel like someone could really easily make a fake email to get someone else in trouble.
Atleast Ziggy's girl is cool.

I'm kind of worried about this too. I don't think people understand it, but sending fake emails is pretty simple to do.
What a vulgar little idiot. It's offensive that he ever got into a University.
Universities don't screen for character, only for test taking skills and bank account. Anyone with a large loan or deep pockets who can pass a multiple guess entrance exam can get into most US colleges.
That e-mail reads like satire
Given the kind of idiot that exists in the wild, satire is and always will be hard.

in america
College is not a government. They deserve the right to know what their students are planning on their property, especially if it's blatantly planning to rape women.
Yes, but the police should be doing the investigations first. Also most fraternities aren't on school property, they just buy up real estate as close as possible to the school and don't have as strict rules, because its our own property.
Frats are the condensed dregs of rich american douchebros, I'd be shocked if it wasn't real
My fraternity is a lifelong commitment, a Brotherhood of people of varying backgrounds and interests, united in principles. There are cancer people literally everywhere, they don't all join groups you can write off. In my dorm, some clowns would not stop dumping their ramen noodles and brushing their teeth in the drinking fountain. As for rich american, that is literally most of my school as it is a private university. Of course there are plenty of not rich people here on scholarships. Given that fraternity life is generally cheaper than dorm life, that doesn't line up with rich people either. If most fraternity men were rich then national of fraternities wouldn't have so much trouble collecting their dues. I don't consider myself to be rich, just middle class that saves and spends selectively making the most of my money, not going to buy a couch when there's one already in my room that has gone through shit since the 70s and serves its purposes. My computer is pretty much the only thing in this room that isn't a piece of shit.
But not a fraternity is not just that. It's a damn good scapegoat for the media, news, and people not involved to shit on and use to troll. Like holy shit what is this thread, It's fighting against generalizations and feeding trolls hard, so that maybe the trolls will fuck off for a short period of time. Tried rating myself dumb for engaging in this thread, but can't self rate.
to be fair he said, "Don't invite any nigger gals or curry monsters or slanted eye chinks, unless they're hot."
sure the words are racist but if he will go for a hot black chick or a hot asian then he's not racist.
he just doesnt want one of these coming:

Stop trying to justify that you're wasting money to hang around a bunch of dudebros who are going to forget you exist within a year of graduation, you're just making yourself look stupid.

Maybe wasting money to get a piece of paper called a degree in CS, but not this. If dorm living or apartment living is more expensive here, how is it a waste of money. As forget about my existence after graduation and dudebros. Well we have an extremely active graduate community and I frequently see graduate Brothers on the weekends and more for special events such as Bids night and initiation. Dudebros can be annoying, that's why I didn't join a house full of jocks and all bro. I joined a house of CS, Robotic Engineering, ECE majors that like to play video games, chill, and still throw parties.

This just sounds like a Uni society/group of friends you have to pay an extraordinary amount of money to join.
Or do american uni's not have proper societies, so you have to bunch together like this.

Welcome to America.
Doesn't matter if it's health care and basic humanitarian services, where people's lives and welfare are on the line, or education, where the literal future of the country and its inhabitants are at stake-- all that matters is how much money you have and how well you can bullshit your way through your existence.
But that's what happens when everything is run like a business and people are pressured continuously to care about their appearances more than developing actual character and decency.
Money aside, education quality in this country really declined when standardized testing became the be-all-end-all determinant of whether or not a school was to be classified as good and whether or not a student was worthwhile.
The higher education bubble needs to burst already like the housing bubble did; when the economics of this issue are disrupted, then a reappraisal of how things currently work will happen-- and that's exactly what we need. Desperately need.

On topic, Greeks being retarded. Nothing new. Anyone who went along with this needs to be expelled and get their asses kicked. Your reputation and life deserve to be completely wrecked when you start condoning rape.
little fucking richboy faggots like this can get into school but i can't get into school because I don't make enough money, yet my parents make too much for me to get financial aid.
Fuck american schools.

We have STEM clubs here where people that have similar majors hang out.
I usually meet up with my CS friends there to help each other on assignments and such. There's no dues to be paid.

So there's proper no uni supported societies?
Completely different here, most Uni's here in Britain have societies that cover as many topics and interests that you can think of, and anyone can start one (within whatever conditions the uni in question sets.)

am i the only one asking why "my dick will be sucked and fucked in the compound basement whether you guys like it or not" is not more questionable than the one racial slur there?
i mean that sounds increadibly rapey, who cares if he uses a racial slur when the context is even more disgusting, furthermore if it was just the slur that attracted this attention, does that mean that this frat has been getting away with this kind of deplorable behavior longer?
Behavior impacts a college whether it was done on campus or not. If this just gets let go because he didn't use the college email, it'll show that the University of Maryland doesn't give a shit about who they let into their campus.
[editline]15th March 2015[/editline]
On top of that, it makes the University look even more unsafe for minorities and women.
As much as I agree that he's a horrible fucking person who shouldn't've gotten into a community college, let alone a uni, I don't think someone should be punished just because they're a racist shit and have racist shit friends.
He should, however, be investigated and fully punished for the rape threats.
The facepunch dilemma: Someone is racist, educate them. Someone is racist, don't allow them into educational facilities. How do we educate people if we don't let them?
The email could be real, could be fake, but what was said is still wrong.
Whoever was behind the email (whether it be the actual guy, or some person who learned how to fake letters) does need to be educated better.
Though I do wonder why an email supposedly sent 1/18/14 is just now getting leaked after the OU leak. I don't know if you can fake sent dates, probably can. But I love the site and the site's sources for the tweets. I scrolled through the second guy's twitter and he seems pretty bad himself.
I'd need to see more evidence before I punished the kid just incase he was being framed.
The comments on this website though:

I would actually enjoy OP having another source where there's actual discussion going on, if any, that isn't about pointing fingers.
Anyway beside all of that, whoever wrote that letter does need to learn.
It could be vaguely interpreted as stating intention to rape. It could however be interpreted differently. He could be expressing disapproval of consent, which does not mean he intended on not asking altogether.
This is not really an issue though. You and anyone who thinks this is constitutes a crime is either trying to find a crime that you can convict this person of because you dislike him and want to abuse the legal system to see him punished for writing offensive things, or you are one of those people who treats anything rape-related as if it is equivocal to bombing an orphanage.
My problem with the former is that it tramples on free speech, which I believe should cover offensive speech. My problem with the latter is that it perpetuates a dogma that, should it become more widespread, will make fair trial difficult in rape cases. This is demonstrated right here in this thread with the fact people want to see criminal charges placed on this person because of two words
How's it feel being the embodiment of why everybody hates "greek life"? No, seriously, I'd love to know. Because "fuck consent" cannot be construed in any other way that "fuck that bitch even if she says no", which is rape by the most common definition. "Greeks", you're all so fucking cult like it's unreal, you're quick to defend your "bros" the second greek life comes under fire for being totally shit and a breeding ground for chucklefucks like the author of this email.

You know nothing about if he is a "fucking richboy faggot". And none of this has anything to do with you not being able to get into school. People with scholarships can be assholes in frats too.
The facepunch dilemma: Someone is racist, educate them. Someone is racist, don't allow them into educational facilities. How do we educate people if we don't let them?
You don't need to go to university to receive an education on "how not to be a racist pile of fuck". You just need someone to sit you down and tell you, "hey, that's not cool and here's why". No sociology courses, no monetary requirement, just a simple chat to explain why they're wrong.
How the hell did you manage to misconstrue "education fixes racism" that badly?

haha, I get it Shineycow
it's ok if they're white, but if they're "Those" its not, totally understandable right?
seriously though what is up with the blatant racism in your post? Do you even get why that's NOT ok?
It doesn't look like that was sent via his school email but it does have the University in his signature.
That being said, I don't really know how I feel about the university launching an investigation. Sure the guy is an asshat but I don't feel that the president should go much further than showing disagreement and discontent with the content of the email.
I might sort of agree with you because I'm not big on spying, but he's also under investigation for sexual assault. You don't get to do that.
Also, as for the fraternity getting in trouble on college grounds, the college is a private institution and doesn't have to let people ruin its reputation.
