More than 50% of Americans back Obama gun regulations
I find it funny how when it comes to most matters large portions of the FP community are as bleeding-heart liberal as it gets but when it comes to gun control some of those same people kick and scream like all those cartoonish FOX News-worshipping gun nut types the reports on which you see on the news and go "man, what the fuck is wrong with these people?"
It's because most of us are advocates of common sense. Hence why we usually support Obama rather than the GOP, but the idea of an AWB is hella retarded.

Thanks man, and to Sobotnik. I sorta assumed that they might work like that, but wasn't sure.

Happy to explain. Wasn't aiming any comments at you specifically, if you were just looking for an explanation.
OK check back in a couple months when no one remembers what state Newtown was in.
i know this is SH and all but the title "50% of Americans" would be better off as "50% of Americans interviewed"

you know, because the remainder of the country isn't theoretical.
The primary error is that they do phone surveys and are performing a poll. A not insignificant portion of the population will simply never take a phone survey. That is a demographic that simply can't be represented.

http://www.gallup.com/file/poll/160094/Obama_gun_proposal_II_%20130123.pdf
Interestingly the percentage of respondents that respond that they own, or have a firearm in the home, is 36 percent.

This is, by Gallup's own numbers, likely not an accurate representation by a fairly significant margin.
Except for the fact that the GSS found household gun ownership to be on the decline and a mid-30% sample would be representative of the population as we currently understand it. It's also documented (by the federal government, no less) that gun owners often lie about gun ownership out of privacy concerns or worry about being profiled. Now, that's a reason to be suspicious of a poll (you have to assume one was politically charged and made people bullshit what they owned, one was frightening, or both), but not this snappy no-thought critique of shit you don't understand.
I understand how statistics work, I feel that releasing a poll that is supposed to represent the entirety of the United States based off of 1,000 people is off. Mathematically speaking it works, but with so many different demographics it would be foolish to believe that poll results from 1,000 people would represent a nation. You and I can see past this, but millions of Americans can't. Hence why I feel this would be more accurate (both mathematically and demographic wise) If they had a much larger sample size.
There is such a thing as error from having too big a sample size FYI, so that's a terrible idea and you still can't pass off as understanding stats.
I have one question, and that is why the fuck do you people care about this poll at all? First off, it changes NOTHING. Obama was going to strive for stricter gun control before this poll came out, and the results of this poll, even if they said Americans weren't in favor of the legislation, would have not made him suddenly stop.
All this poll suggests is that your viewpoints may not be the majority view, and you care about that?

Yeah? Like I said it was neat to see that the things I have the biggest issue with are the ones that are the least-widely supported.

These numbers are understandably high after the Newtown shooting.
