WASHINGTON -- A divided federal appeals court has ruled that opponents of taxpayer-funded stem cell research are not likely to succeed in a lawsuit to stop it.
In a 2-1 decision Friday, the panel of the U.S. court of appeals in Washington overturned a judge's order that would have blocked taxpayer funding for stem cell research.
The panel reversed an opinion last August by U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, who said the research likely violates the law against federal funding of embryo destruction.
The 1996 law prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars in work that harms an embryo, so private money has been used to cull batches of the cells. Those batches can reproduce in lab dishes indefinitely, and the Obama administration issued rules permitting taxpayer dollars to be used in work on them.
now to sit and wait for the ~Christian Warriors of America~ and the Republicans to start bitching.
finally, some headway towards more medical break throughs
And they should be duct-taped to stop them from bitching.

Most likely won't happen so long as the tea party exists and the republicans are in congress.
I don't want a penny of my money going towards helping people I want you to bomb the middle east with it ONLY
I hope one of them needs a medicine in the future that was brought about by researching stem cells.
Yes! Finally! A little late, but hey this is America, we're a little slow sometimes.

So they've made embryo fragments that can continually produce stem cells for them?
I'd say :science: but this is biology, not physics
As long as things like this are being funded, I'll keep paying my taxes.
If not, well then I may just have to accidentally misplace my 1040 again...

Brb reporting to IRS.

how fuckin' dare YOU not pay ur taxes. it boils my pure amurrican blood to see u liberal fuckheads not pay ur taxes. Ur all COMMUNIST scum for all i care cuz you only care bout' what science does and not about the fact that we are ran by a BLACK A-RAB MAN who has let his A-RAB people into our beautiful cuntry. this whole thang is just another way for the liberals to stop real prograss and to stop focusin' on the real issue at hand here. we dont need some fancy new medicul thing we need to make sure our armeh an' naveh are still the best they is and to further our war against the IS-LAM-ESTS that are threatenin' our CHRISCHEEN WAYS.

You're trying way too hard. :colbert:
Thank Darwin for this step forward in science and understanding. Those clowns in Congress better not fool with the future, as they have NO place in it.
Science FTW. Who's with me?
I'm glad it got unbanned
My stance on stem-cell is this: if God has a problem with it, let him come down from wherever he is and announce it on national television. Then, and only then, I might think about changing my opinion. Probably not, though.
Why was there a ban on it any way? What actual arguments do they have against it?

Blasphemy or something :v:

Embryos are babies or something
I think someone called stem cell research "a holocaust" once
Thank God.

There's a weird attitude amongst some people that don't know better that any and all mass pulled from an embryo or anything of the sort must be a human and anything that touches it in any way is murder. Even if it was a discarded embryo to begin with.
It's the same kinda drive against donating corpses to medical schools or keeping your placenta in a jar as a souvenir, basically.

Very, very undeveloped Babies, anyway.
I think it's funny that Christian people freak over this when the Bible states that people are considered to be born when they exit out of the vagina.
Thank God.

That's another thing. It's already dead. If I were aborted, I'd like to think that I wasn't a complete waste of cells. My death would go towards helping people live longer. It's not like banning stem-cell research will somehow bring them back and make scary abortion go away.
also people seem to think that stem cells HAVE to come from fetuses
THANK YOU GOD! We have proof god exists now.

Haven't they over come the whole embryo thing
Hmm.. So instead of scientific breakthroughs, creating body ligaments that people would actually need in dire need in case they were dying, was stopped funds because of Religion? Waoh.
Rename thread to Christian Fundamentalists, please. You're being unfair to people of other faiths.
Some faiths are okay with stem-cell.

if god has an issue with it, may he strike me down and end me!
Good, this is progress.
I hate it when laws are passed based on religious reasoning. Find some other reason if you want to block it, but religion needs to be kept out of lawmaking.
