It begins
They're about as intelligent as cats, or so I've heard.
I've heard they're a pain in the ass to keep as pets.

Why was I not informed of the existence of this
octopus can breath air?
They breath through gills. As long as the gills stay moist they can be out of the water, until the oxygen in the moisture is depleted.
Maybe they saw us taking a swim in their water, so they're just trying to swim in our land.

My biology teacher just showed this comic in lecture a week ago. Poor invertebrates
Hah, I just finished reading biology for tomorrow about the evolution theory that Darwin made. Right now, Darwin needs to come out of his grave and tell us how and why this is happening.
It's pretty fucking awesome though.
The only reason why fish don't come onto land to eat is because fins make poor legs. Technically fish could come out of the water for brief periods of time as long as they can get back to the water. Many species do actually hobble onto land for awhile. For a fish, it's a matter of getting better appendages so that you can move around outside of water. If you're a fish that has strong enough fins to hold yourself up, and can get back into water to refresh your gills, you could stay out of the water indefinitely. Much like the Mudskipper. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudskipper
For an animal like an Octopus, it's a lot easier. Since you have no bones and multiple appendages, you can just sort of flop yourself out of the water. Again, you're good as long as you can get back to the water.
The big leap is the development of the lung. All fish (well, not all, but most) have swim bladders. This organ is used like the ballast tank on a submarine. When a fish moves up and down, it's filling/emptying this bladder with air. (sharks on the other hand do not have a swim bladder, and control their depth by dynamic lift much like an airplane). Swim bladders evolved into primitive lungs like that of a lungfish. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lungfish
Now, when you possess the proper appendages to hold your body up, and can breath oxygen, it's only a small step to becoming a land based animal.

Yeah the do this alot on the beach when they are stuck in tide pools, same with mudfish

It's a really helpful trait for aquatic animals to be able to hobble over land. For some species, if you somehow find yourself stuck in a puddle, you're pretty much fucked.

Unless you're a fairy shrimp who just goes dormant until the puddle comes back. They just chill in Vernal pools their whole lives but it has to suck.
Also I've always wondered where and what did you go to school for, our resident scientist?
Gentlemen...the future is here.

Killifish do that too.
And nothing yet really. I'm still in community college but I'm going to transfer for Marine Biology eventually.
