This.
If he ends up with criminal record, it can pretty much fuck him over for whole life. I am not saying that hacking servers and then just destroying information is cool, because it's not, but you should consider if you really get anything from blaming him.
It will teach him a lesson not to fuck about. You can't just let people hack you and let you get away with it.
Because your points are shit.
You're one to say. Your points were copies of other's points.
The fucking kid should have thought about the consequences before hacking the server.
Seems like he's wrecking some kids life for something a simple backup fixed.
Too bad they won't learn anything from forgiving.
Jail time for them, and no lube for when Big Bubba comes around.
PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE FORGIVEN FOR DOING SOMETHING ILLEGAL WHILE FULLY KNOWING IT'S FUCKING ILLEGAL.

It seems that this thread is kinda hot shit, so I won't stay there for long, but, think about this;
Have you ever pirated something? A game? A song? Now, even if RIAA bullshit claims were true, and you actually caused maybe even a few hundred dollar damage to them by it, how would you feel if you got called to court over few hundred dollars, leaving you with criminal report, which strongly influences your chances getting a good job etc?
You did barely any damage, you didn't know that you will ever get judged, but they still completely fuck you over. Would you still see it the same way? Because Piracy, no matter if it's fair or isn't, is momentarily illegal the same way hacking servers is.
You're one to say. Your points were copies of other's points.
Maybe because the points he made and others made were correct, you are fighting a corner and your points aren't very decent, he hacked the OP and he got dealt with, simple as.
These kids over a year ago thought it would be funny to hack my server... I called local authorities and canadian police took great interest in it...
Hahaha guess his little "joke" just got really funny for me and a lot less for him...
Im flying out there in october for his trial...

I'd be pretty fucked then, but that would be because I did illegal shit. Doing illegal shit is bad.
OP is taking his big first step into the real world, which most of you are criticizing him for. Of course most of you will be on the short end of the stick your whole life if you can't take advantage of the things given to you. OP will probably end up being a CEO and making billions of dollars every year.
OP should've put up some security measures on his server. But script kiddies are fags and need to be told they're in fact not cool at all.
I'm not really sure whose side I'm on.

Because we know that everything illegal is illegal rightfully, and we should promptly grass anything potentially illegal around us, right?
I am not justifying what that kid did, it was somewhat obviously stupid, as he wasn't even able to use proxy or something, but still I have to feel with him as he gonna have a lot of problems over practically nothing.
I know a thing or two about servers and networks in general, and there are servers just over there which if hacked, could be used to get the hacker quite some money, and so they already have been attacked many times. If me or my dad wanted to sue everybody who tries to hack them, we would spend half of our time by doing only this. It's just easier to start dropping the packets.

Because suing teens makes you a CEO and makes billions of dollars? Fucking justice system, how does it work?
You did a great job and I encourage you.
A lack of security does not in any way justify criminal acts.
Maybe this will help one or two people realize that there are repercussions for actions on the internet.
Whether or not the OP should've protected his files better is irrelevant. The kid made the choice to screw around in a place that he shouldn't have. He made the choice to break the law. Arguing that he shouldn't face punishment is stupid. If I leave a bike unlocked and someone steals it, I would still expect the person who stole it to be charged!
He broke the law, the law doesn't look at who would benefit most. Its black and white, stop trying to make it gray.

The thing is, compare the damages here. Is this guy loosing a bike? No. Is he losing an object? No. At most it's going to cost him a couple hours work fixing the server, and some kid is going to get a criminal record over it.
just gonna leave this here:
