Finally, a Sony grill with grooves.
The grooves allow the fat to drain out of your ass!
The idea behind this isn't to be some new "holy shit buy it now" console. It's to try and encourage as many purchases of the console before the new generation. There isn't anything particularly wrong with it. But the timing does make people who are actually following new console news a bit wary of it. At that price most people are more tempted to buy something. It's a pretty good business move to be honest.
Can't say I'm a fan of the design though.
Ahem,
Sony, I have a proposition. Instead of tacking meager updates on your old as dirt system to desperately try to keep it alive, you could just, you know, RELEASE A NEW FUCKING GENERATION OF CONSOLES ALREADY?
Why don't console devs seem to understand that we need another generation of consoles? Our current ones are starting to become to old for our games!
I really like the look of it. I already have one, so it doesn't appeal to me personally so much, but I do like the look of it.

Companies are always going to try to extend their products life longevity up until they can sucker them into generation of their product. They'll do this either by accessories or upgrading hardware, such as this or like the DSi, 3DS, etc. What surprises me is that people actually buy into these ripoffs, replacing their old versions for this, even though it isn't an upgrade at all.
When Microsoft released the 360 Elite, they upgraded the wifi so that it's integrated, along with some other features I don't care to research. That's an upgrade, although it wasn't enough of one to make me buy a new 360. This is a downgrade, akin to the 360 Arcade, although that was made for a significantly lower price as a result of not having a hard drive or a lot of memory.

Sony has already established that they want a ten year life cycle for each system, I believe.
Pretty soon I'll be able to throw playstations like frisbees
I dislike CD trays, I much more enjoy the slot things because they protect the inner workings of the console by not having to open the entire thing every time I want to put a disc in it
Playstation 3, Playstation 3 Slim, Playstation 3 Super Slim, Playstation 3 XL, Playstation 3 XXL...
I can go all day. It's like Nintendo and the continual renovation and release of the "DS" series.

They "started" to become too old several years ago.
iirc no past console generation has ever lasted this long

Nintendo made fuckhuge profits. Sony didn't. They're wondering what they're doing wrong.
cant wait for my laptop sized fans and constant overheating
Dammit Facepunch. Let me clear a few things up, this is nothing to whine about since practically everyone wins:
- It's cheaper to produce
- It's cheaper to buy
- It consumes less power
- It likely does not affect the development of the PS4, as Sony is huge.
-It's ugly
-There's no need for a new PS3
-It's ugly
-There's no need for a new PS3
-it's just a smaller ps3
-for people who don't own a ps3 this is perfect, sony pays less to produce, the people pay less to purchase
of course that doesn't matter to you, a badass hardcore gamer whos parents got them every system! what's the point of buying a cheaper ps3 if i already have one?

Ummm the 3DS is not just another DS, it is a new system with vastly improved hardware.
I thought everybody knew this by now.

He might be referring to the 3DS XL?

Hence why I said UPGRADED HARDWARE.
It's like the original gameboy and the gameboy color. "Vastly different systems" yet very similar in design.
if this consumes less power then i hope that translates to better thermal management and less overheating

I did that with my xbox after it got an e74 for the 4th time. I just chucked it off my deck.
Still rocking my fatass PS3, but this thing looks like a pretty cool replacement if mine ever kicks the bucket. Hopefully that price will come down though...
Considering my fat sob of an 80GB PS3 did kick the bucket, this might be a viable alternative...
Why don't you understand that it takes time to actually make one? It's not like they can pop out a new console in an instant
I still have the very first most expensive edition PS3, I don't need another, nor a slimmer one.

Ok
Those who do not have a PS3 and want one, however, will find this to be a good thing.
Seems pretty cheap, might actually buy this.
Plus it comes with a copy of ACIII.

Let me repeat myself:
Hey Sony, want more PS3 sales?
Shove that PS2 SoC back in there, and re-enable Linux support.
And this time, supply it with a PROPER gfx driver.
Also stop locking the PSVita down tighter than fort knox, the whole "locked down" memory cards ordeal is so retarded it's hilarious yet sad at the same time.

The problem is everyone and their mum bought a PSP only to homebrew it and play emulators and pirated games on it.
They're selling the PS Vita at a loss, and if the only reason people buy it is so they can emulate older games then they have made nothing but a loss. They need people to buy actual games and accessories other than used/freeware to make up for the loss from the sale of the console.
Purchasing a Vita and then never buying anything for it is something Sony wants to avoid.
