They're selling the PS Vita at a loss, and if the only reason people buy it is so they can emulate older games then they have made nothing but a loss. They need people to buy actual games and accessories other than used/freeware to make up for the loss from the sale of the console.
Purchasing a Vita and then never buying anything for it is something Sony wants to avoid.
Since when is that the consumer's problem? If they decide to sell at a loss, that's their fault.
And that is a problem with an easy solution; don't buy a Vita, which is what a lot of people are deciding to do and why the Vita is a failure product.
The problem is everyone and their mum bought a PSP only to homebrew it and play emulators and pirated games on it.

Well then I won't purchase a Vita AND it's games at all.
Maybe Sony should rethink their whole strategy regarding consoles of all sorts.
Well if this came out I sure as hell can't wait when they release the version that can be folded and placed into your pocket

They are selling for a loss because the whole "FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY-NINE US DOLLARS" thing didn't work the first time. They are hoping to make up for it through the sale of games/PSN games/Playstation+/accessories.
Point is that they need profits or Sony will never make a console again. They could charge for online like microsoft is doing, or aim for the casual crowd like nintendo did but if they did either of those their current userbase would hate them for it.
They made the Vita to sell for a smaller loss than the PS3 and to make the 3DS look like a toaster in comparison, but for the same price as a 3DS. Nintendo pulls "lol $160 pricedrop" out of its ass. Sony is in a sticky situation, and it's not as simple as drop the price again.

That's better for Sony, actually.
Purchasing a vita and lots of games = Profit for Sony
Purchasing a vita and nothing else = Loss for Sony
Purchasing nothing = Neutral, no gain or loss
Uh. Didn't they learn their lesson with the PS2 Slim?

You mean drastically improving sales and supporting its massive lifetime?

I didn't ask for an explanation for why they did it. I'm saying that it's not the consumer's fault that they chose to sell something at a loss, so the consumer shouldn't be punished for it by getting a locked device. If you don't want to piss off your playerbase and want to get actual good sales, it'd be wise not to do something that encourages people not to buy your device. For instance, they could have sold an unlocked PS Vita for a much higher price.
The Nintendo price drop is not the only reason why the Vita is a failure; please stop with the blatant Sony fanboyism.

Selling an unlocked Vita for a higher price is actually a reasonable idea, but if they do that and 90% of their sales come from people looking to homebrew it and pirate the games then the developers won't want to make games for the Vita anymore as they get low sales and high piracy rates. Not to mention it would confuse a lot of people as to why they're making the unlocked version a lot more expensive who don't know the piracy situation. No games to pirate means less sales of the increased-price vita.

How was I being fanboyish? I'm not trying to antagonize Nintendo.
I'm pointing out that the vita was made to compete with the 3DS, because it was.
I wonder if this will have the PS2 emulator chip that was missing in recent PS3 models?
I might trade in my old 40gb battle tank for this if so. I miss my old games.
I dislike CD trays, I much more enjoy the slot things because they protect the inner workings of the console by not having to open the entire thing every time I want to put a disc in it
You know it's pretty much the same as the disc drive you have in your computer right? I've taken apart my fair share of Original Xboxs, 360's, and PS3's, and they're all pretty much the same. Different guts of course, but the drives are the same concept.
But does it have games?
Why do consoles need to be slim anyway? Is finding a spot to put down a console a huge deal nowdays?
Anything major released very late into the console generation is doomed to fail IMO.

Uh, no it wasn't? The first leaked pics of the PS Vita predate the 3DS announcement

Yeah, but rumors are kinda less credible than leaked pictures that turned out to be legit

rumors and common sense were enough for sony to know that Nintendo was planning to work on a next-generation handheld console
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12697975
I mean like very close to the next console generation. Like less than a year before.
Incoming cheap as shit "old" PS3's.
I got the original fat 60GB on release day. They are supposed to be the most unstable version of PS3 as far as I know and highly susceptible to YLOD. I've had friends who've had their disk drives break. I had 3 or 4 PS2s that all broke due to dust and such but somehow my PS3 is still working over 6 years later.
I think if my PS3 broke now, I wouldn't bother getting a new slim or anything, I'd just sell the console and games and wait for a new generation, upgrade my PC instead.
