Trump Campaign Manager Paul Manafort Charged with "Conspiracy Against United States"
How exactly is conspiracy against the United States a 5 year sentence? That sounds like something people get executed for tbh
Because "Conspiracy Against the US" is relatively vague, it can be from (huge) tax fraud to actual treason.
I think it’s best to not get our hopes up here. Taking down former Trump cronies is amazing but I won’t hold my breath at this leading to the fall of the big man. He’s so narcissistic he won’t step down, even if there were video of his closest allies giving Putin a handjob over the American flag.
Additionally, one of the legal opinions I've read today stated that any bail condition set on Manafort might be made with the stipulation that he can prove the money is "clean." After all, he can't pay bail with the money he's been being charged with laundering. Given that he hasn't had any official income in ages, with his assets being seized in the investigation, it may not be possible for him to pay his own bail.

Today's revelations don't just implicate a couple of Trump's "former cronies," but nearly everybody in his inner circle, and even Trump himself.
Does anyone have any opinions on if the Papadopoulis update would expedite the process/timeframe Seth Abramson laid out (of the investigation taking 12-18 months)?

Meuller got a judge to waive the attorney-client privelege between Manafort and his lawyer, so that he can compel his own lawyer to testify against him.
This is a matter of national importance. The United States, through the Special Counsel’s
Office (“SCO”), is investigating foreign interference in the 2016 presidential election and
potential collusion in those efforts by American citizens. The SCO has uncovered evidence that
Target 1, who was associated with the campaign of one presidential candidate—now the
President—and Target 2, who was Target 1’s employee (collectively, “the Targets”) at Target
Company, may have concealed from the government the extent of their lobbying actions on
behalf of a foreign government and foreign officials, in violation of federal criminal laws, by
submitting two letters through their former counsel, the Witness, containing false and misleading
information to the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”). 1 The SCO seeks to compel the Witness
to testify before a grand jury regarding limited aspects of her legal representation of the Targets,
which testimony the SCO believes will reveal whether the Targets intentionally misled DOJ
about their work on behalf of a foreign government and foreign officials. The Witness has

refused to testify unless directed by a court order, due to professional ethical obligations, because
the Targets have invoked their attorney-client and work-product privileges. The SCO posits that
the crime-fraud exception to both privileges applies and, alternatively, that the Targets have
waived the attorney-client privilege to the extent of disclosures made in the submissions to DOJ,
and that the work-product privilege is here overcome by a showing of adequate reasons to
On September 13, 2016, Heather H. Hunt, the Chief of the FARA Registration Unit,
wrote separately to Target Company and Target 1, noting that “[n]umerous published sources
raise questions” that Target Company and Target 1 may have engaged in activities on behalf of
the European Centre for a Modern Ukraine (“ECFMU”), the Ukrainian government, the
Ukrainian Party of Regions, or other foreign entities, thus requiring registration under FARA.

Target 1 (Sept. 13, 2016), ECF No. 9. Ms. Hunt requested that Target 1 and Target Company
provide documents and information for review and, shortly thereafter, Target 1 retained the
Witness as counsel for the purposes of responding to these requests. Target 1 Opp’n at 2.
Now things are getting spicy.
Why is any form of bail even being considered? Wouldn't they be huge flight risks? I mean they obviously have the money and connections to bribe a few officials and get out of the country.
And even if they weren't a flight risk, they should probably be in custody for their own personal safety and for the integrity of the investigation. The stakes definitely seem high enough where someone high up would want to "tie up loose ends".

They're not waiving all attorney-client privilege. It's not like they can ask his attorney to tell them everything she can remember about anything he's said regarding Russia. The issue here is that Manafort sent two letters to the DOJ through his attorney, both containing falsified information. This makes her a witness to a federal crime.
Think of it this way: you're in a meeting with your attorney, when a guy walks in. You shoot him in the face. The only people who witnesses this event were you, your attorney, and the dead guy. Attorney-client privilege doesn't prevent the attorney from acting as a witness to a crime in this case - you just need to waive it regarding that event. That's what they did here - they waived attorney-client privilege as it relates to a single criminal event (the two letters). They can't compel her to talk about any other issue, just the crime that was committed.
It's career suicide for a lawyer to go against that though, even if it's for a sound reason.
You lose the confidence of any current/future clients.
i was expecting more dirt on Trump’s financial malfeasances, i always assumed it was the more robust lead over collusion - not that it isnt possible
Jesus fuck this is like a episode of House of Cards.
Except its not Frank Underwood worming his way out of trouble.
I guess when he created that MAGA slogan/meme, he didn't expect it to mean his own degenerate parties' demise as a part of it.

Then again, if nothing happens after something like this, then you KNOW the systems truly fubar.

Haha given that he filed for re-election right after the inauguration this is a big deal

It's not really her choice to make at this point. They're looking to compel her to testify as a witness, and to do so they need to waive attorney-client privilege as it relates to a crime she actively witnessed.
She could (technically) refuse to testify, but if they got a subpoena against her, they could force her to provide testimony regardless. If they're already at the point of waiving attorney-client privilege in this case, it's probably unlikely that they haven't already compelled her to testify before the court.
Haha given that he filed for re-election right after the inauguration this is a big deal
Which makes the fact that he got to pick a SCOTUS judge that much more stupid, since they railed on Obama for trying to pick a judge while people were running for POTUS during the last election.
Done partially for loophole reasons, campaign rallies allows him to refuse access to people which don't agree with him.
Went to a Trump rally near me when he was running to experience first hand. It was absolutely terrifying.
what great times we live in. This will be a great source of entertainment.
Me too. He came to Portland Maine and immediately started shitting on Somali immigrants.
Still don’t get how people find Trump entertaining, a good showman, etc. All I saw was a bumbling dumbfuck.
If Trump is impeached me and my girlfriend are throwing a party and everything will be peach flavoured.
Peach-mints
