they believe in creating a large, unified, pure islamic state (under their "interpretation" of the qur'an).

they likely believe that this will usher in an age of security and prosperity under the system that they think their god will see as best fit for governance.

and in pursuing these goals, they use extreme violence; i can't tell you exactly why, but idealists have used violence in pursuing their goals for a long time. totalitarian communist dictatorships are prime examples; they believed in their vision, and they believed that those opposed to that vision were the enemy, a threat/obstacle to be eliminated; they believed that their ideological and physical opponents were stopping them from creating the ideal society.
