That's awful. My mechanics family is still all in Baghdad, I hope they are okay. He was lucky enough to have left Iraq in 1989.
These guys have a straight shot into Syria. They will use Iraq as a refreshing base for R&R for their buddies in Syria and will attempt to use it as a recruitment base. Left unchecked, they will surely attempt to overthrow any opposing party in Syria and then consume Iraq as a whole.
Seems like they are happy with their gains in Syria for the moment and are going all out blitzing Iraq first.
Decapitation, Crucifixion, mass murder
yeah, I think I'm just going to take your word for it and not watch it.

Regardless, these guys are like termites. You first are upset that they've nibbled into your deck, but it's not a part of "your house", so you leave them alone.
Next thing you know, your deck is skeletonized and they're in your floorboards.
I can't understand how many years have passed and it still seems like the Middle East is in a modernized Medieval Era.
I'm usually against NATO intervention in the middle east but this needs to be fucking obliterated, and quickly
what if mikhail kalashnikov came back from the dead and was like
"don't touch my fucking guns"
and took all of their ak's
You'd need to resurrect Eugene Stoner as well given all the american hardware these guys have stolen

I blame the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the meddling of European Powers.
"Hey, after we carved up this huge wad of a nation that tried really hard to keep everything tied together, instead, let's take huge chunks of obviously ethnically tense land, throw a royal family on there and call it a day! SURELY NOTHING WILL HAPPEN."
But what has happened has happened, and we can't throw the blame on anyone when we have a much more serious situation on our hands.
Iran has already chosen to step up to the plate, albeit menially. Other nations should still attempt to engage or at least put a squeeze on the operations and workings of ISIS, lest we let it explode into something terrifying.
It's weirdly captivating how they use social media, all the modern technology we do. I bet they go back home and watch television, play video games, talk about sports, or girls they like, or anything else Americans might. They're oddly normal, young people, drawn from all around the world. Here they are though, remorselessly killing. They can slaughter people, conduct public executions, torture, and worse. They aren't hardened soldiers, many of them, they're just people. They are people indoctrinated by some vile preacher since they were children, told that this was justified. They don't have second thoughts, they don't consider the morality of this. To them it is morality. Any one of them could have been as normal was you or I, but they were indoctrinated into some of the most evil shit on this world. It's disgusting.
I'll say it again: let's give the Iraqi's air support. It's minimal risk and maximum effectiveness. These people need to be stopped.
Why don't we just find them and hammer them with cluster bombs?
Honest to god worse than Hitler
At least the nazis were a broken up bunch, only listening to leaders. These guys are fucking insane
That Saleel Sawarim video was enough to convince me that they're pigs.

Holy fuck, the quality of their equipment is pretty scary. Not just their cameras, but the fact that many of them are armed with night vision goggles, body armor and weapons equipped with silencers, laser sights and advanced sights. Not to mention their uniforms(those that are uniformed) are nicer than Iraqi Security Forces uniforms.
I'm curious to know how much, if any, of this equipment has been gained attempts to train and arm anti-Assad groups.

And just like people they're capable of being massive arseholes, and really we should just bury them as quickly as possible.
My Orthodox Christian friend in Iraq lives in the Kurdish region about 30 Km away from fighting. He's not concerned because the Kurds have apparently fortified the area, and the ISIS don't care much for Christians, more-so about Shi'ites.
I think your friend is extremely naive not to be worried.
Just because they're focused on Shi'ites doesn't mean other religions aren't an issue to them.
Just because the Kurds are fortified doesn't mean they won't be attacked. When you believe god is on your side, you have no fear of the enemy's forces, no matter what strength there is, especially when you're now rich as fuck from taking over a major city.
The thing that really makes ISIS/ISIL stand out, is their organization.
They aren't suicide bombers. They aren't going to throw themselves into machine-gun fire aimlessly. They work, act, and are an army. They are not an "insurgent force". They are a military force, and one to be reckoned with.

Or in the much more likely scenario it's been taken from the hundreds or thousands of Iraqi troops they've killed, many of whom were using american equipment. They've probably been able to raid Iraqi armories.

And they will enforce their own fucked up version of justice in the most brutal way possible upon everyone.
Will the middle east ever catch a fucking break?

It was only a matter of time that such an organization came into being. Islamic extremists have been fighting with middle eastern and western governments for what, 3 decades now? They were bound to get enough experience and knowledge to operate from a "band of fighters" to a "squad of soldiers".
I believe it's a quote from TES V, "The best skills are passed on by the survivors". After 3 decades of fighting, they're bound to know their enemies now to circumvent them. Especially when Iraq's government and military structure was torn completely down and shoddily rebuilt by the Americans.

First they came for the Socialists...
Considering how well armed they are and how numerous they are, it'd be extremely difficult to engage them on the ground without sustaining massive casualties if someone decides to try and deal with them. Lest the plan of action be bomb the everloving fuck out of them with as massive a caliber of artillery as possible for a month straight.
Containment would be priority for the likes of Iran. Shell them now before they break up and move into the surrounding countries, they have to potential to mobilize into something massive
Carpet bombing is an outdated form of military action that hasn't been done in decades since the advent of smart bombs.
I don't know why everyone is saying carpet bombing them as if it's some kind of effective tool against an enemy. It only kills ten civilians for every one enemy and fuels their due to that.

I'm sure they've gained the majority of their equipment from slain Syrian and Iraqi forces, but I am concerned about the possibility that resources that may have been intended for non-Islamist anti-Assad forces may have been acquired by ISIS. Similar things have happened in the past.

I'm still shocked by the power of those IEDs in that video, it's obvious that there are a lot of veteran guerrilla fighters on board at this point who have been doing this shit for a decade. Those roadside bombs were literally stripping the armor off of 25 tonne APCs and sending them careening 30 feet into the air
homestly I find it hard to comprehend how we as humans can be so cruel to each other. Surely we have instincts as any other animal and know its not right to turn on your own. People like this are monsters
Their methods are so unsettling, crucifixion and burning seem like the worst ways you could die.
At least in most suicide bombings the victims die instantly or within minutes, but slow and painful deaths en masse is just sadistic and pointlessly cruel
I don't want to click the links but at the same time I want to.

They really need to be stopped. If their horrible doings aren't problematic enough because it's happening elsewhere, just know that they might very well become a big problem if we don't do anything about it. I would compare them to the Nazis, but they'd probably be even worse if they had a country to run.

Not really, not unless someone puts in a major peace keeping force that aggressively roots out radicalism.
Which abso fucking lutely no one will do because they don't want their people dying in the process.
So no, the Middle East will literally never have a break unless somehow someone absolutely shatters those people.

Do it.
And experience what mankind is capable of, what mankind has been doing since its birth and will continue to do until its end.
Even if it sickens you, disgusts you, makes you vomit - you should do it. Personally, I think it's slightly cowardly to not see such things and make an opinion on how bad these people are, or any people that commit such atrocities. Don't hide behind your computer and keyboard from the realities that are happening in this world because one day they may, and probably will, affect you.
The state of Iraq right now makes me think they might have been better off if Saddam was still in power.
why this shit was happening when saddam was in power.
Do people forget Saddam just sugar coated what he did?
