how un-british of you
Quick question, is there actually anything on the falkland islands worth having?

from a modern day viewpoint, no
...b-but muh Malvinas!

It might help in making a claim on Antarctican soil in the future. It's very likely that Antarctica is very resourceful.
Oil was found there.

Argentina has been stiring shit (alot more) since then.
Quick question, is there actually anything on the falkland islands worth having?
Pride, apparently. Something the Argies are a bit short on.
The only way I see Argentina doing something is if Christina flips out and declares invasion to keep herself in power or something. Argentina doesn't have the weight to just invade and annex the place like what happened in Crimea, and the fact they found oil there would have the UK come crashing down on their asses.
Quick question, is there actually anything on the falkland islands worth having?
Yep, we know there's oil, could be quite a fair bit so of course people care about the islands.
More importantly though the folks on the island have said conclusively they want to remain British with 99.8% of the residents saying please don't let the argies come over here.

It's less about the oil and more about the people, the Falklanders have flat out said we want absolutely nothing to do with Argentina.

That is extremely wrong, Rockhopper Exploration found oil in 2010 and have recently revised their estimates upwards, things are looking really good for oil in the Falklands.

and if i recall there where a few faked voters that voted pro arg. and it was still 99-ish%
and if i recall there where a few faked voters that voted pro arg. and it was still 99-ish%
Basically, and the UK is pretty big on self determination which means if the Falklanders want to be British then we'll defend them, just like we did before.

Why are you guys acting like Argentina trying to retake the Falklands is a real possibility, you sound ridiculous
Why are you guys acting like Argentina trying to retake the Falklands is a real possibility, you sound ridiculous
Because the cuts to the British Armed Forces have left gaps which has reduced our ability to fight far-flung wars. This is to such an extent that it is now official policy to not go to war unless it is as part of a coalition.

There is no greater danger than underestimating your enemy.

Cause they've been banging on about it for ages, called the actual residents of the islands squatters and have mentioned multiple times in recent history that we stole Las Malvinas.
So yeah, pretty serious deal when you're talking about taking sovereignty away from British citizens and occupying British land.

they don't know how wrong they are.
It's a massive shame that we even have to be defending an island full of sheep and 3000 people in the first place.

a stupid grudge and actual intention of taking military action are two very different things
a stupid grudge and actual intention of taking military action are two very different things
They've done it before in the not too distant past and we lost a lot of good people fighting in a conflict that no one thought would happen because 'who would take on the Royal Navy' turns out Argentina did and despite what you might believe, we almost bloody lost because we drastically underestimated them, Ironically the lack of air cover on our part was a major catalyst in almost contributing to our failure.
Also that conflict happened when we actually had a 'sizable' military. Sure it's unlikely that Argentina will try again, but it's not impossible. And lastly when our Admirals come out and say we don't have the forces avaliable to retake the island if we lost them does actually hold some weight, not some facepunch armchair warrior saying Argentina could not do it.
a stupid grudge and actual intention of taking military action are two very different things
Oh well thanks for clearing that up Captain Obvious, I thought they were the same thing all this time.
If they're threatening the people on the island then it should be taken seriously, on the off chance it does actually happen.
I'd rather make a type 1 error over a type 2 error.
Being American, the most I know about Britain is how good Doctor Who is
Are the Falklands genuinely threatened? Or do they just use it as a military base?
Being American, the most I know about Britain is how good Doctor Who is

Probably not, but it's worth taking seriously on the off chance Argentina somehow gets enough of its shit to mount an invasion again. It has a garrison there because it's a British territory and cause the Argies have literally never shut up about the Falklands.
Also we have nuclear subs about there, although I'm not sure if that's the case any more.
Being American, the most I know about Britain is how good Doctor Who is

there was already a big war over it called the falklands war
the islands are british territory with around 3000 british citizens but look at any map in argentina and it will claim it's their territory which is taught in schools
propaganda is published claiming they will take it back, or it's already theirs.
so depending on how you threatening behaviour...
also, obligatory post.

I stopped here.
Do you people really believe Argentina has the ability to launch an invasion? Really? How can first world class citizens be so ignorant and mis-informed?
If we put both armed forces into a graphic, the area between 1982 and 2014 is way fucking larger than the area between 1955 and 1982.
There's NO WAY Argentina can send troops to the falklands. If we had a shitty army back in 1982, our army today is shitty^10

With just leaving a couple of Typhoons, a brigade of marines and one -ONE- average ship, there's no way our airforce can get there. First of all, any attempt to launch an invasion would be warned in advance by Chile. Second, Typhoons are last gen figthers. Our most combat capable aircraft, the Etendard....dates back to the 70's...and the rest of the airforce is falling from the skies by itself. You don't need to tear the FAA a new asshole. They are tearing it for themselves. Third, we still have 1980's equipment.
If I had to find a difference between the people who support this here and people who approved the Iraq war back in 2003 based on some arguments with a lot of flaws...no difference.
EDIT: Before any idiot comes making a stupid commentary about butt hurt and so other stuff related to a drunken monkey: I don't give a fuck about the islands. For me, they can be british 4life. The only thing I do give fucks about is that the UK government gives 0 fucks to reclaims from ONGs and the Government about the way companies fish in the maritime borders between the Falklands and Argentina and the continental extension.

No one here is advocating invading Argentina, so there's a difference right off the bat.
No one here is advocating invading Argentina, so there's a difference right off the bat.
But you are advocating that we are going to invade you sooner or later.
Basically, no difference in the level of delusional thinking.
What's next?

EDIT: Hahaha, sorry guys, but I've got to tell you this: If I were you, I would stop wasting time thinking about Argentina, and try to look what the fuck has the Gov been doing wrong, because this is just pure 100% smoke.

I know it's unlikely you'll invade, but it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
