Legally you have to report it to the government, but you DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE IT TO THEM.

What you have to do is tell them that you found money, and that if anyone comes looking for it and can identify some specifics (where, how much, what kind of bills, etc) you will give it to them.

DO NOT TELL THE CITY THESE DETAILS.

City governments are full of crooks and assholes, and if you tell them the details they will absolutely call you up and lie to you and take the money. And if you give them the money they will NOT give it back no matter what.

Government employees are mostly assholes.
